Each stu- dent is on this -journey and is benefiting personally through a larger huilding, an enriched cur- riculum, increased athletic facilis ties. and a broad activity program. All these lull and happy experif ences. reflecting the growth and progress ol' our high school. are preparing youth to take his place in the community. .1 l iz-WV' Treasured Memories of Qur High School Days --1 A spirit of friendliness pervades Austin High School. .lust as business and social life offers opportunities for meeting and working with people. so there are unlimited opportunities in classes, clubs, and in the gymnasium for pleasant contacts of youth in his journey through high school. Youth will long remember the friendly relation- ships he has had with administrators, faculty, and his classmates. I With a new eight hundred thousand dollar ad- dition to our million dollar high school building, our public school system may be characterized by the words, growth and progress A new junior college and athletic field stadium are also the physical expression of the progress made by our school for the youth of the community. One thousand six hundred eighty students represent the enrollment in the junior-senior high school. Eflicient faculty members guide this student body on their journey. Youth is benefiting by this evident growth and progress. The Staff of the Austinian believes that Youth and all his activities in high school this year are of interest to you. As a record of this journey we give you in pictorial and written form the theme of the 1940 AUSTINIAN, Youth's Journey Through Austin High School. The six years that Youth spends in the junior' senior high school can be compared to a journey in the world about us. In the high school, as in the journey of life, Youth meets obstacles which can be conquered only by determination and the will to do right. When Youth comes into the seventh grade, the goal of graduation appears difficult and steep. However, when the twelfth grade is reached, he can look with pride and satisfaction to his accomplish' ments. Youth's friendships formed on this journey are valued memories through the years. Eight citizens of the community give freely of their time to the educational interests of youth on their journey through the local public schools culminating with graduation from the senior high school. This year the Board of Education has had the added responsibility of the construction of the new eight hundred thousand dollar high school addition including a junior college as well as the construction of a new stadium at the athletic field. Ever alert to the necessity of meeting the educational demands of a rapidly growing community, each member of the Board of Education is to be commended for his efforts. Youth is grate' ful to these progressive citizens. The members of the Board of Education and their years of service to the school system are: W. I. Bergman. nine years: E. C. Ban- field, thirteen years: R. C. Alderson, sixteen years: Brooks Cutter, three years: R. H. Daigneau, four years: Lloyd Lilygren, three years: and H. O. Westby, four years. Superintendent S. T. Neveln, admired by the student body for his sincerity and genuine friendliness, is now serving his nine! teenth year as superintendent of the public schools. ,X xt e crest? Youth and high school are just the beginning ol' the journey. The significant fac- tors ol' the journey are: the place we start from. the panorama along the way, and the quality of the goal. A journey of a thousand miles is begun by a single step. and it is made up of interludes. Wlaat your journey through life will be depends upon what you make of each step and each interlude. I I3 hope your journey through high school will def velop in you sterling character, high ambition, clear vision. undaunted courage, intelligent initia- tive. and keen judgment and discrimination. Wlaat you do and see and hear and assimilate on the journey through high school will determine what your life will he like when you are done with high school. Put the best into your journey through high school and the best will be yours. I can think of nothing much better lor you than a busy and useful life. S. T. NEVIILN, Superintendent Cui' Administrators Guide Us L. J. GUSTAFSON 0 Youth, said George Bernard Shaw, the noted English writer, is a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on children. Looking back over a lifetime of achievement, Shaw is entitled to make such a statement. Perhaps anyone from the vantage point of old age can call up nostalgic memories of youth-mem- ories of friends made and friends lost, opportunities taken and others which eluded the grasp, and golden experiences enjoyed or ignored. Youth's journey through high school provides a series of experiences, and happy associations each one of which either adds to his stature or takes away. The public school of the United States is a great institution and proving ground for youth: it lies within the power of each in- dividual to make it truly meaningful to himself. L. J. GUSTAF-SON Principal Cn Qui' High School Journey 0 In prospect the journey through high school seems long and difficult. In retrospect it is but a very short span on life's high- way. By the time one has finished high school, he should have acquired certain habits, attitudes, and ideals which mark him as a desirable and useful member of society. Youth's journey through high school may be a pleasant and in- valuable experience, unlocking doors to a limitless world of knowledge. The effect it has on each individual is dependent upon the point of view he adopts. Before the temple of Excellence the immortal gods have placed labor: and the way to it is long and steep, and at the commence- ment rough: but when the traveler has arrived at the summit, it then becomes easy, however diflicult it was at lirstf'-Hesiod M. The tenth grade has 270 members, the eleventh grade 313, and the twelfth grade, 240 members. A student council composed of representatives from each home room meets regularly each week. Clayton Gute is president of the coun- cil: Stephen Wright, vice president: and Norma Elmer, secretary. Mrs. Blanche Black is the oflicial faculty adviser. In addition to the student council officers, there are class oflicers and advisers for each senior high school class. All problems pertaining to the senior high school homerooms are discussed at the council meetings. Among the projects the council was responsible for this year, was the efficient dis- tribution of Thanksgiving baskets to families in the community. , Senior Ufficers Q President Kenneth Dahlgren Vice President Jean Guy Secretary Norma Elmer Treasurer Luverne Pike l.ell to righi: Jean Cmy, lxenneil1l5.il:lgren, Norma Elmer. l.uverne Pike not in picture. Cur journey of Memories 0 As freshmen, we who are now members of the Class of l94O, were just beginning a four year journey in search of learning and guid- ance. A year later we had been promoted into the senior high school and were well accus- tomed to the journey. However, as juniors, with Miss Lura Lynn Straub, Miss Henriette Liboz, and Mr. Ray Wescott, as our advisers, We found thrills awaitf ing us as we produced our extraordinary, suc- cessful class play and entertained the seniors at our prom. This year the production of The Youngest culminates our work for Austin High School and brings us near Commencement. We are proud to be the first to be graduated from the new auditorium. Vvlith this we shall have come to the end of a journey which has been made pleasant by a faculty and administration who have been con- siderate and helpful at all times. Sixteen girls who have come from neighboring towns and cities are enrolled in the course this year. directed by Miss Hazel G. Murray. Practice teaching has been an experience for these girls. They first started by observing in the grade schools in Austin. Then they went into group work which was followed by room teaching in the grade schools and in the junior high school. In the spring they spend two weeks teaching in the country schools which is followed by six weeks of spring primary. The girls also have special training in art, music, physical education, and speech. Upon graduation. they receive a certificate to teach in the rural schools of Minnesota.
