, ,,,,, ,, f 5 taught by the Reverend Mr. Peak, in a building on the site of the present tire station and afterwards removed to the llerman Gunz home on South St. Paul street. Then came the great event-the erection of our first real school. in 1865, on the spot where the Carnegie Library now stands. The era of formal education in Austin began with the building of this fine new school, a one-story, two-room brick building which cost 32750, a tremendous amount of money for this struggling prairie village. On Sun- days the building was used as a church, first by the Congregationalists and later by the Methodists. For tive years school was held in this building. taught in turn by XV T. lllandeville, Nr. Otis and his daughter 1.ibbie, Mr. 1'ike, and Mrs. Abbie Crane. These names still linger in the memories of the old residents of Austin. 1n 1869 the town had gqeiyiiai beyond the bounds of a two-room school and a three-story brick sc'l1cmcwliqg'as erected on the block noyv occupied by the Franklin building. lt' was built by D. bl.
