Professor Glenn Maxwell, with a dedication consistent with that of a true Christian gentleman, has contributed These years of his life to create in students a love for good literature and a framework upon which to build further study and reading. His sphere of influence broadens beyond the classroom, for his teaching procedure stimulates a desire for a greater knowledge of philosophy and also for life. Gentle and appreciative, respectful and scholarly, Professor Maxwell offers a fresh way of learning for many and a fresh look at living for most. T: v. 4 : ,, iw, .n. By its very nature Chris- tianity has been revolutionary, demanding of an individual and a society a continual and progressive change. Thus, the Austin College professor, as a responsible revolu- tionary, inspires growth through his concern, while the student, by the nature of his curiosity and his role as a student, interacts, and the pattern is established for a college program. They care for their work, for relationships with other people, tor their own meaning in life and tor concerns beyond their daily needs. For many persons, the choice of living with cynical uncon- cern or ultimate concern has been made. Those who have chosen ulti- mate concern are permeated by it and freed from the domination of other concerns. Austin College is ultimately concerned. Austin College cares. L PRESIDENT JOHN D. MOQELEY ,my , . l We 3 u M Y, ' 5'- kf I ' 'll -1 President Moseley was granted a short term study leave, made possible through a Danforth Foundation grant, and was away from Austin College during the fall. Bob Van Schoick redeemed him- self for missing a first quarter conversion attempt by angling a 22-yard field goal for the winning margin late in the last quarter. The Kangy's lone touchdown came after a punt exchange left the Roos on the Knights 34 yard line. After Joe Meade scampered 7 yards, quarterback Wes Eben hit Butch Gladen with a scoring toss. Eight turn- overs by the Kangys marred the statistics although Van Schoick had an impressive 44 yard punting average. The Austin College defense led by Mike Skinner limited Northwood to a lone touchdown and a meager 65 yards rushing. Pat Day re- covered a fumble and Mike Toon snagged an interception. Offensive leaders included Gladen who caught four passes for l2l yards, Joe Meade who rushed 67 yards on 21 carries, and Mitchell Dickson with 84 yards on ll carries. This was the first victory for new head football coach Duane Nutt. . ,t frfllsgif-'.2-'I ' 1f'1-It 1 V .-1 'filly ' f--'fqqa , 1' -.r .... ., ,A A.- L-avi-jig' '-- ' . The 1969-1970 Austin College basketball team fought to by far its best season in recent years under the excellent direction of Dr. Bob Mason, head coach and athletic director. With the assistance of a large and spirited following of fans, the Hoppers battled touan admirable 12-14 season record. A strong team unity and spirit contributed heavily to the improved year. Bill Swann served as the floor general along with co-captain Don Johnson. Swann and sophomore Lee Burnett led the team in scoring throughout the season. David Koch, also a sopho- more, had many high scoring games too. Johnson and Burnett led the team in rebounding with assistance from Mark Hudson. Hudson and David Heitman both transferred to Austin College this season to strength- en the team. Freshmen showing themselves in varsity action included Chris Doyle, David Lower, and Bill Roberts. Junior Bill Ayres and Senior Jim Wilson also had good varsity seasons. All varsity players will return again next season except for Wilson who sat out the last part of this year with an injury. The Roos started fast this season and never relented the pace. Rival Midwestern was edged for the first time in a decade with an 88-86 squeaker. In the last home game, Lee Burnett popped from 25 feet out at the buzzer for an 87-85 triumph over Texas College to cap a strong and satisfying year for the Roo cagers. 1969-1970 co-captains Bill Swann and Don Johnson, both iuniors, surround Coach Mason. Such a program allows many more students the opportunity to participate in athletics. Baker Hall and the Chi Delts were leaders throughout the foot- ball season. Mike Toon and Tim Bryant won the badminton title. Baker Hall triumphed in volleyball and Bill Swann took the intramural ping- pong championship. The Chi Delts, defending their intramural trophy, are leading the basketball race. The baseball season also sees all fra- ternities and dormitories active in intramural athletics. Women's Intramurals got off to a fine start with the Independents of Coffin and Thompson running up an undefeated rec- ord of 7-O in volleyball. The Independents are working hard to retain last year's mark of 4-O. March will bring in softball and more spirited competition and fun among the sororities and dormitories. Winners! 'The mission of Austin College is not simply to educate men and women, but to make them more responsive to their fel- low man, and better equipped to help their fellow man. One reason for a liberal arts education is to help us understand our relationship to the total family of man. That understanding must then be translated into a practical, one-to-one concern for others. Otherwise, education becomes sterile and useless. An educated man should mean a man who is enlightened in his attitude toward others, and who breaks out of the shell of total self-interest. If we forget that, we had better get out of the business of education, because we will have lost our value and our purpose. WM. R. WILSON Assistant President ACTIVITIES yi fs... A A 4v fs. OCA is a program which sends groups of 8-10 young people from the United States and Canada to Africa for the summer. These groups work along with African students and villagers on the construction of work proiects which are suggested by African government agencies and private organizations, in accordance with the developmental needs of the country. While the work done on the proiect is an important part of OCA, equally valuable is the opportunity of developing a mutual understanding and respect among Americans, both black and white, and Africans. This past summer three members of the AC community participated in this experience. Jan Braun was in Gambela, Ethiopia where her group transformed an old buckling warehouse into a manual training center. Megan Seaholm was in Oio and Tagos, Nigeria where she worked with Oio villagers in the completion of a community youth center. Allen Smith was in Ghana, West Africa, serving as the leader of a group of students and had the particular proiect of constructing a three-room primary school. Junior Year Abroad JBI1 Lewis and 6 Greek friend BT PieI'Ce Sue Rowe and Karen Daly spent their fall College in Greece. Jan spent her entire ferm in Spain, year here. 'P' N . if.
