AUSTIN SCHOLARS Left to right: David Dean, Patricia Thompson, Stephen Johnson, and Timothy Flynn. v Begun this year, Austin Scholars is an academic honors program with membership limited to 10 percent or fewer of an entering freshman class. The program is designed to grant maximum free- dom in planning the academic course work and co- ordinate education program to fulfill individual needs and interests. There are no general graduation re- quirements for the Austin Scholars. Each pursues an individually designed program of study prepared in consultation with his faculty advisor. The pursuits of the Austin Scholars may extend beyond the campus with special emphasis placed on appropriate study abroad, study in another college for a term, work or study in another culture, appren- ticeship in business or industry, and religious or social service. Applications are encouraged from students of un- usual ability, who, through past achievements have given evidence of such traits as scholarly promise, exceptional creativity, intuitive perception, and in- dependence of thought.
