Steen returned a punt 64 yards through the entire Lion squad to the one-yard stripe, from where Johnson plunged over for the lone counter. Capt. Crook attempted to kick a field goal in the final minutes, Steen’s generalship, Johnson’s blocking and Harper and Moyer’s line play was outstanding. AUSTIN COLLEGE 0 S. M. U. 60 The second game of the season was with the S. M. U. Mustangs at Dallas, where the Methodists smothered the Kangaroos 60 to 0, de- spite the frequent substitutions by Coach Pierce. The Kangaroos worked to the seven-yard line, where Finley intercepted one of Ter- rell’s passes. St. John recovered a punt on S. M. U’s. 27 and Buc- hanan punted out on the seven. Moyer, McCraw, Stephens and Breed- love stood out in the line, while Harris and Terrell flashed occasionally. BUCHANNAN 4 AUSTIN COLLEGE 20 McMURRY 14 Flashing a powerful running attack, a hustling Kangaroo eleven cleared its first hurdle in the conquest for the conference champion- ship, by scoring a 20 to 14 victory over the McMurry Indians. Steen skirted right end for the first six points. Terrell bucked the line from the two-yard stripe for the second score and Buchanan ripped the Indian wall for the final touchdown. Moyer kicked two extra points. Pruitt, Harris and Terrell flashed with their running game, while Young, Breedlove and Moyer showed good in the line. AUSTIN COLLEGE 13 DANIEL BAKER 6 With Pruitt smashing the Daniel Baker line, the Kangaroos trampled the Hill Billies, 13 to 6, for their second conference win. In the second period, Terrell went over left tackle for the first score. Pruitt stampeded the Daniel Baker line from the 14 yard mark in the third period for the winning touchdown. Steen converted. Captain Crook was Austin’s best linesman. For the back’s Terrell, Pruitt, Harris and Steen was the best combination. I AUSTIN COLLEGE 0 HOWARD PAYNE 0 (TIE) The Kangaroos battled Howard Payne to a scoreless draw at Brownwood, which practically eliminated the Jackets from the confer- ence race. Austin outgained Howard Payne 3 to 1 on running plays, gaining 224 yards to the Jackets’ 129. The Kangaroos marched to the eight-yard line but Howard Payne's defense stiffened. Starring for Austin were Hardin, McCraw, Harper, Pardue. Captain Crook, Johnson, St. John, Buchanan and Steen. AUSTIN COLLEGE 12 TEXAS WESLEYAN 3 Austin College handed the Texas Wesleyan Rams their first defeat of the year here. Every uniformed player saw service in the game. In the third period, Harris and Terrell carried the ball to the 14, where Terrell scored the initial six points. A double reverse play, Perry to Johnson to Buchanan, netted 31 yards and the final touch- down. Stephen and Young dealt the Rams secondary misery. AUSTIN COLLEGE 23 STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 12 Adding another victory to their rapidly increasing string, Coach Pierce’s eleven slaughtered the Stephen F. Austin team, 25 to 12 at Nacogdoches. Tallies were made in second and third quarters. Touch- downs were scored by Terrell, Buchanan and Johnson (2). Pruitt bucked the line for one extra point. AUSTIN COLLEGE 6 ABILENE CHRISTIAN 6 A blocked kick on try for point after touchdown saved the Kanga- roos from possible defeat at Abilene when they were held to a 6-all tie by Abilene Christian. Bartley scored Austin’s six points when Buchan- an tossed him a 14-yard pass. McCraw blocked an attempted place kick, saving Austin from losing the game. The Kangaroos got to A. C. C’s seven in the second quarter but were halted there. AUSTIN COLLEGE 26 ST. EDWARDS 7 Scoring three times in the initial period and once in the second, the Kangaroos moved another step nearer to the championship when they ruined a St. Edwards home-coming, 26 to 7. Johnson plowed center for the first marker. Steen converted. Preceded by Moyer’s blocking a quick kick, Steen countered on a quarterback sneak. Ter- rell tallied on a reverse from the 20. Steen circled end for the extra point. Realizing a life’s ambition. Harper seized Devaney’s pass on his 40 and raced 60 yards for the final tally. Play of the Kangaroo guards was notably praised. WEBB I AUSTIN COLLEGE 13 TRINITY O The Kangaroos annexed their first gridiron championship in his- tory of the Texas Conference and defeated the Trinity University Tigers, 13 to 0, for the first time in four years here Thanksgiving Day before one of the largest home-coming crowds in years. Austin crossed the Tigers’ goal line in the second and fourth quarters. Ter- rell scored in second period when he reversed the field and crossed the goal for a 37-yard run. Caudle tallied in the fourth on the old “hidden ball” play, when he pranced 35 yards to the goal. Play of Capt. Crook and Prather was their best all year. Six seniors scored their first victory over the Tigers in four seasons. AUSTIN COLLEGE 6 DURANT TEACHERS 0 “Finis” was written on the most successful football season since 1924 when the Kangaroos defeated the Durant, Okla. Teachers, 6 toO at Denison in a drizzling rain. Cameron Harris tucked the ball under his arm on the 42 and with blocking of Pruitt, Terrell, Steen and the forward wall, skirted Durant’s left end and ran 58 yards for the only score. Buchanan intercepted a pass and ran 40 yards to be stopped on the six-yard marker. The Kangaroor made nine first downs to five for the Teachers.
