Mahaffey, although not officially connected with the Faculty, have both been prominent this year in the activities of the col- Their work of organizing, instructing and leading the Glee and Choral Clubs has been especially commendable, and many of the students have taken advantage of the opportunity of having private vocal lessons from them. Their work has been truly successful and we owe to them our sincerest thanks for making; it possible for Austin College to have successful Glee and Choral Clubs this year. Mr. and Mrs. Mahaffey are both graduates of the Indianapolis Conservatory of Music, of Indianapolis, Ind. Mr. Mahaffey had charge of the public school music and voice department in Indianapolis before coming to Sherman. He was instructor in music and voice at Oklahoma Presbyterian College and the Southeast- ern State Normal of Durant, Okla., for several years. HISTORY OF AUSTIN COLLEGE ®URS is no ordinary college, for there are found in its history hose things which are remarkable and unique. Austin College was established at Huntsville in 1849 by the Presbytery of Brazos. The distinction is yielded to it of being the oldest college in the State. The charter, which was granted and signed by Governor Wood on Novem- ber 22, 1849, is, with a few amendments, yet in operation. The founders of the institution desired that it be named in honor of Dr. Daniel Baker, the most zealous worker in its estab- lishment. Dr. Baker objected to this, and himself proposed that the college be named for Page Tiuentq-Eighl
