Faculty and Their Amusements CHROMASCOPE- 1917 w Kangaroo Kourt J N the manifold activities of college and dormitory life a peculiar situation exists. interests of the residents of this campus, however, are more closely drawn together than in a political organization. Every action of each individual is felt throughout the whole student body. The gentlemanly conduct or the ruffianly exhi- eral tone of the whole student body. the guise of “personal liberty,” cannot, in this association, be allowed full leash without infringing unduly on the rights of others and hurting the student body in gen- eral. It is one of the regretted weaknesses of human nature that each individual cannot or will not curb his own actions, but that some sort of restraint must be exer- dent body, can be handled by the students in a much more effective way than if the Within the last four years (1913-191 7) the good and the bad of several such organizations of the student body in the shape of councils, representative courts, and so forth, has been brought out by actual experiment. It has been sufficiently proven that the particular oiganization best suited to the peculiar needs of Austin College in Kangaroo Kourt, when run according to its highest ideals. Warren THE pul year was Mr. Warren’. Sr.t year al Au.dn Collepe. A. athletic coach he has done great work along the lines of football and basketball; baseball is yet to be heard from. The coach’s Alma Mater is Amherst, where he created a great reputation for himself as an all-around athlete. He had charge of all athletics at one of the prominent preparatory schools in the East before Arriving late in September, he set to work with a squad composed of many green men and built up a good representative football team. It's true Austin did not put many of her foes “in the dust,” but it was said by more than one team of the big schools of the State that Austin has a wonderful machine. No man can build a winning combination in one season, nor does anyone expect him to. The class of football as displayed by the Austin College club of last season showed that it had been under the direction of someone who knew the “inside” of the game. Our basketball team this year is another plume in the coach’s cap. This is the first year that Austin has had a regular team for the past several years. Despite this fact, however, Coach Warren soon assembled his men, trained them and gave to die College a more perfect machine than it even expected. What we like best about the coach is that all the athletics with which he is connected are clean and healthy, morally. Personally, he works with his team to win, but, when he loses, he loses like a true sportsman. We hope that we will have him back with us again next year, because we know that if anybody can place a winning team in the field from Austin College, he can. Lowe, R. G.—A natural football player. Should have been at half, but was forced to play quar- ter, where he gave an excellent account of him- self. Hits hard when carrying the ball and is a bad man in an open field. Worthy of men- tion on any state team for offensive work and a demon on the defense. Aston—A hard hitting half and a good forward passer. Unfortunate that he waited till his Coffin—Developed into the best guard on the team. We look for him to add much to the Bevens—Absolutely new at football, but a hard worker and a hard tackier. He promises to develop into a first class lineman for our com- SHERRILL—Fast and diagnoses a play well. Keep’s his feet well and is hard to put out of a play. B.—Although he was not able to take part in a majority of the games he made every count while he was in, jarring things up every McCall, Capl.—One of the hardest workers on the team and a very capable leader. A team composed of ten others following his example need never feel bad over a defeat, and there will be few to lament. W. H. W. The fastest man on the team, he was a star at all positions. He won his place at forward, where his quick headwork made him hard to guard. McElroy will be back next year to show up even better. Along with him must be considered the others who worked so well. Carroll, the star at falling all over himself and shooting goal at the same time; Sensabaugh and Stephens, who were experts at throwing baskets, made things hum when a game started. However, there could not have been a team without a center and two guards. Robertson and Davis were masters of the ring. Sherrill and Guy Rainey were unsurpassed as guards. Two contestants are selected from each of the two college literary societies. After hearing each man speak, the judges give their decision as to which of the contestants is the worthy man. This year the contest was won by Virgil Rhea Aston, a member of the Athenaeum Literary Society.
