INCE the organization of the Athenaeum and Philennoian Societies, it has been the custom for two representatives from each society to meet in joint de- bate on February 22 of each year. This is the first and one of the most im- portant contests of the year, and a great deal of interest and enthusiasm is manifested by the supporters of each side. Last year it was won by the Athenaeum representa- tivej; this year they were less fortunate, and victory favored the Philennoian debaters. The subject was, “Resolved, That the Philippines should be made independent” Affirmative, R. L. Owen, L. A. Wright, Athenaeum; Negative, J. H. Bell, J. W. Moss, Philennoian. 118 fK7T Wm. L. EVANS. In order to select an orator to represent Austin College in the State Oratorical Asso- ciation, a preliminary contest is held, in which two men from each society contend for the honor. The contest was held March 2nd, with E. A. Lindsey and W. L. Evans, Philennoian; F. A- Moore and C. H. Spence, Athenaeum. The result was, Evans first, and Spence second. The State contest, in which were represented Texas Univer- sity, Southwestern University, Baylor University, Texas Christian University, Trinity University, Fort Worth University, and Austin College, was held in Sherman, April 1 7, 1 908, and Mr. Evans won first place for Austin College with his speech, “Industrialism in Civilization,” which appears in this volume. He will represent the State of Texas in the Southern oratorical contest at Monteagle, Tenn., this summer. C. H. SPENCE —Athenaeum. In commemoration of the victory which gave birth to Texas Independence, each year the college offers what is known as the San Jacinto medal, to be contested for by six orators, each society being represented by three men.
