Friars ear Fourth Straight g 2-B-THE DETROIT NEWS- Monday, Marci- 9, 1964 Austin Wins Swim Titlegi Beats Rivals With Depth ay KEN witunivis Visitation's Bob Kuhnlein and Jerry Gorski both won two events .and each set a record in the Catholic League swimming cham- pionships yesterday' at Pat- ton Pool. But their sturdy perform- anceis only emphasized how much depth defending cham- pion Austin displayed in. wrap- ping up its fourth straight title and fifth in six years on a hefty 49-point bulge over De La Salle, 99-50. C o a c h Mel Giovannucci's Austin squad won three events -in contrast to Visitation's four-but also had seven sec- ond-place finishers, four in third, a pair in fourth and four more in fifth. Visitation trailed the cham- pions in third position on a 34- point total. T00 MUCH DEPTH With two medals in hand the 6-foot-5 crew-cut Gorski com- mented afterward: I just don't think that any- body will ever beat Austin. They've got so much depth that you might beat them in one event and they'll come back and hammer you in another. Jerry's coach, Bernie Krzy- wada, frankly admitted, It al- Wlgu uni . most looks hopeless but we might catch them one of these years. It seems Giovannucci comes up with six or seven fine prospects every season. We've just got to keep working harder to keep up with him. FRESHMEN HELP Giovannucci pointed out that five freshman strokers con- tributed to the title perform- ance - Jim Matthews, Leon Trumbauer, Bill Snethkamp, John DeHaes and Don Forsyth. Matthews set the freshman pace with nine points and Mat- thews added seven and a half. John Skantz, a sophomore transfer from Wayne Junior Austinfs Swimmers Picked to Grab 6th Catholic Title By KEN WILLIAMS Swimming is one of the youngest organized sports in the Catholic League, butwyou would never know it on the basis of Austin's string of victories over a brief four- year -span. Coach Mel Giovannucci's strokers and divers have in- spiringly accounted for 47 dual meet triumphs and only three setbacks - all nonleague - against Madison Heights, Grosse Pointe and Hazel Park. Today at 2:30 at Patton Pool, Austin is a virtual cinch to wrap up itsgfourth con- secutive league championship and fifth in six' years. The de- fending champions are an- chored in the 11-team- field by 19 individual qualifiers and two relay units. With their balance and depth, Austin could lose every event, which is very unlikely, and still wind up with an- other crown, cited a coach- ing rival. OVERCOME INJURIES But Austin's domination this season hasn't come easily. Three' of Giovannucci's vet- erans have been sidelined mo- mentarily along the route by 'accidental mishaps. A month 'ago freestyler Owen Marx gashed his foot at Patton Pool and the injury re- quired eight stitches. Then backstroker J o h n Skantze was knocked unconscious and' had to be hauled out when he struck his head while making a swift tum in a 20-yard pool during an individual medley race against Grosse Pointe. John Schaible, another free- styler, collapsed at , home . after being treated .. for an allergy with sulfa drugs' and the illness kept him out of practice for a week. 2 FOOTBALL SWIMMERS I While the majority of Austin's speed merchants are of lithe, trirn build, Giovan- nucci, who serves as the school's athletic director, also has two football holdovers. They are captain Pete Wayne, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound blocking guard and track sprinter, and Bill Snethkamp, a 6-foot-1 freshman end. Wayne, a four-year veteran, has eamed three football letters. Both are freestylers. Diver -Rick Rutan, a 5-B, 130-pound senior, doubles as a golfer The son of Lochmoor pro Chick Rutan shoots in the low 80s. Skantze, a 175-pound sopho- more, is a transfer from Wayne Junior High and since making his varsity debut last January has won nine of 10 races-five in the 100-yard backstroke and four in .the 200-yard individual medley. His only loss was to Visita- tion's state Class B champion, Jerry Gorski, in the medley. Mike O'Connor, a juniogvis another stellar performerwin the Austin brigade. He paced the qualifying trials in both the 100-yard butterfly and-400- yard freestyle. SOME CLUB-TRAINED Desire and the determina- tion to improve by constant practice have been the key to Austin's success, said IGic- vannucci. We haven't accel- erated a recruiting program on swimmers - settling for only what we can get-but our title string has served as a campus attraction. ..- 1 would say that roughly 50 percent of our swimmeis hail from families who are private club members, But like De La Salle and U. of-D. High, we use the St. Clair Recreation pool for our work- outs. U. of D, also practiced' at Post Junior High on the west side. Other schools in the Catho- lic championship meet today are Benedictine, Cathedral, Notre'Dame, Salesian, Visita- tion, Dearbom Sacred Heart, Redford St. Mary and St. Paul. Only Visitation has its own pool. i High, and Mike O'Connor, a junior, were Austin's individual winners. Skantz set a record of 1:01.9 in the 100-yard back- stroke and O'Connor paced the 100-yard butterfly in :59.1. Austin's unit of Dick Gehlert, Frank Bagnasco, Owen Marx and captain Pete Wayne grab- bed the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43. RECORD IN '200' Gorski set a record of 2:14 in the 200-yard individual med- ley, erasing his preliminary time of 2:15.B, and took the 100- yard breaststroke in 1:04.9. His Visitation teammate, Kuhnlein, posted a record 4:29.l in the 400-yard freestyle and also won the 200 in 2:01.3. De La Salle's 200-yard med- ley relay unit accounted for the meet's other record on a clock- ing of 1:54.4, De La Salle also had an individual winner in diver Tom Szatkowski, who tal- lied 158.25 points to 148.45 for Austin's Forsyth. The other individual winners in the 11-event program were Redford St. Mary's Paul Dowd and Benedictine's Tom Lees. Dowd covered the 50-yard free- style in :23.8 and Lees took the 100 in :53.2. Austin Sets Pace In Swim Trials Two records fell Monday as Austin. going for a fourth straight championship, 1e'd Catihc-lm League swimming pre- liminaries by qualifying nine ln- dividuals and st relay team for tlhe finals in five events. Tom Lees of Benedictine went the 50-yard freestyle In :23.6, and Gerry Gorski of Vistltation swam the 200-yard Individual medley in 2115.8 for the records. Yesterday's results: 200-YD. SAME OLD STORY.-Getting dunked and receiving championship swimming trophies is old stuff for Mel Giovannuccl. The Friars mentor along with Capt. Mike 0'C0nn0r accept- I ed the Catholic League team title award last Sunday from Ralph Owen, executive director, for 'the fourth straight year. Austin had too many guns for its rivals and had little trouble posting 99 points in the finals. Its nearest rival was DeLaSalle with 50 points. 1MC,photo by Utyka-nskil . Friars Swimming Menfor Keeps Record Uniainfed WHO IS THE most success-' ful Catholic prep coach in the Archdiocese? How about the fabulous Mel Giovannucci? In fam' short years he has built Aus- tin' High into one of the state's prep swimming powers. When his Friars beat out eight other challcngers at Pat- ton Pool Iast Sunday to win the Cathdlic League swim- tming championship again, Giovannucci had his fourth straight titleholder in four years. He also maintained his perfect record against Catho- lic League opposition. Giovannucci, a former Bos- ton University swim ace, has guided his Friar charges to 44 straight conference dual vic- tories as well as four consecu- tive Catholic championships. His lads have lost only three dual meets over that span, but only to the' bigger public school teams. Depth has bden the key to Giovannucci's spectacular suc- cess. This was pointed up clearly in last Sunday's finals. The Friars had only three first-place winners as compar- ed tio Visitatioxfs four, but Austin picked up seven run- ner-up spots, four finished third. another pair ended fourth'and four more fifth. Austin piled up 99 points as compared to second-place De- LaSal1e's 50 counters. Visita- tion was next with 34. Other team totals follow: UD High, 30: Dearborn Sac- red Heart, 19: Cathedral, 14: Redford St., Mary's, 113 Bene- dictlne and Notre Dame, seven each, and St. Pau1's, five.. SIX RECORDS were written into the books. Jerry Gorski and Bob Kuhnlein. each racked up a pair of victories in the finals, to account for Visita- tion's four first-p,laces. Gorski, State Class yard individual medley champ, set a new mark in this event when he was timed in 2:14.4. He won the 100-yard breast- stroke in 1:O4.9. Kuhnlein set a new stan- dard in the 400-yard freestyle in 4:29.1, bettering the 4132.6 set by Mike O'Connor of Aus- tin in the preliminaries. John Skanze, another Friar ate, shattered the oldest rec- ord in the book with a win- ning 1:01.9 effort in the 100- yard backstroke in beating the 1:O2.7 set by Fred Michalik of Holy Redeemer in 1957. Y DeLaSaI1e's 200-yard, medley relay squad knocked one-sec- B 220- ond off the 1:55.11 registered' by Austin in 1962. Members of the Pilot 'squad were Ken Nardone, Steve Boney, Bob Dael and'Jim Gray. V I PAUL Down, who quarter-I backed Redford St. Mary'S, team last fall, pulled the big-i. gest upset when he beat Tom Lees of Benedictine in the 50- yard freestyle in :23.8. Lees had a record :23.6 in .last Wed-' nesday's preliminaries. Lees won the 100-yard free- style in :53.2 but he failed to? better his record 152.5 setin: the preliminaries. I Tom Szatkowski of DeLa-E Salle won the diving event.f while Mike O'Connor of Aus-'I tin topped me field inthe 100-I yard butterfly in :59.1.' Austin's winning 200-yard freestyle relay unit composed of Dick Gehlert, Frank Bagn- asco,.Owen Mark and Peter Wayne, was timed in 1:43. Only two schools have won Catho1ic.League swim titles. Visitation headed the' pgck six times, and Austin five in the llbyear' history of the title! meet. 1 1
