But their sturdy perform- anceis only emphasized how much depth defending cham- pion Austin displayed in. wrap- ping up its fourth straight title and fifth in six years on a hefty 49-point bulge over De La Salle, 99-50. C o a c h Mel Giovannucci's Austin squad won three events -in contrast to Visitation's four-but also had seven sec- ond-place finishers, four in third, a pair in fourth and four more in fifth. Visitation trailed the cham- pions in third position on a 34- point total. T00 MUCH DEPTH With two medals in hand the 6-foot-5 crew-cut Gorski com- mented afterward: I just don't think that any- body will ever beat Austin. They've got so much depth that you might beat them in one event and they'll come back and hammer you in another. Jerry's coach, Bernie Krzy- wada, frankly admitted, It al- Wlgu uni . most looks hopeless but we might catch them one of these years. It seems Giovannucci comes up with six or seven fine prospects every season. We've just got to keep working harder to keep up with him. FRESHMEN HELP Giovannucci pointed out that five freshman strokers con- tributed to the title perform- ance - Jim Matthews, Leon Trumbauer, Bill Snethkamp, John DeHaes and Don Forsyth. Matthews set the freshman pace with nine points and Mat- thews added seven and a half. John Skantz, a sophomore transfer from Wayne Junior Austinfs Swimmers Picked to Grab 6th Catholic Title By KEN WILLIAMS Swimming is one of the youngest organized sports in the Catholic League, butwyou would never know it on the basis of Austin's string of victories over a brief four- year -span. Coach Mel Giovannucci's strokers and divers have in- spiringly accounted for 47 dual meet triumphs and only three setbacks - all nonleague - against Madison Heights, Grosse Pointe and Hazel Park. Today at 2:30 at Patton Pool, Austin is a virtual cinch to wrap up itsgfourth con- secutive league championship and fifth in six' years. The de- fending champions are an- chored in the 11-team- field by 19 individual qualifiers and two relay units. With their balance and depth, Austin could lose every event, which is very unlikely, and still wind up with an- other crown, cited a coach- ing rival. OVERCOME INJURIES But Austin's domination this season hasn't come easily. Three' of Giovannucci's vet- erans have been sidelined mo- mentarily along the route by 'accidental mishaps. A month 'ago freestyler Owen Marx gashed his foot at Patton Pool and the injury re- quired eight stitches. Then backstroker J o h n Skantze was knocked unconscious and' had to be hauled out when he struck his head while making a swift tum in a 20-yard pool during an individual medley race against Grosse Pointe. John Schaible, another free- styler, collapsed at , home . after being treated .. for an allergy with sulfa drugs' and the illness kept him out of practice for a week. 2 FOOTBALL SWIMMERS I While the majority of Austin's speed merchants are of lithe, trirn build, Giovan- nucci, who serves as the school's athletic director, also has two football holdovers. They are captain Pete Wayne, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound blocking guard and track sprinter, and Bill Snethkamp, a 6-foot-1 freshman end. Wayne, a four-year veteran, has eamed three football letters. Both are freestylers. Diver -Rick Rutan, a 5-B, 130-pound senior, doubles as a golfer The son of Lochmoor pro Chick Rutan shoots in the low 80s. Skantze, a 175-pound sopho- more, is a transfer from Wayne Junior High and since making his varsity debut last January has won nine of 10 races-five in the 100-yard backstroke and four in .the 200-yard individual medley. His only loss was to Visita- tion's state Class B champion, Jerry Gorski, in the medley. Mike O'Connor, a juniogvis another stellar performerwin the Austin brigade. He paced the qualifying trials in both the 100-yard butterfly and-400- yard freestyle. SOME CLUB-TRAINED Desire and the determina- tion to improve by constant practice have been the key to Austin's success, said IGic- vannucci. We haven't accel- erated a recruiting program on swimmers - settling for only what we can get-but our title string has served as a campus attraction. ..- 1 would say that roughly 50 percent of our swimmeis hail from families who are private club members, But like De La Salle and U. of-D. High, we use the St. Clair Recreation pool for our work- outs. U. of D, also practiced' at Post Junior High on the west side. Other schools in the Catho- lic championship meet today are Benedictine, Cathedral, Notre'Dame, Salesian, Visita- tion, Dearbom Sacred Heart, Redford St. Mary and St. Paul. Only Visitation has its own pool. i High, and Mike O'Connor, a junior, were Austin's individual winners. Skantz set a record of 1:01.9 in the 100-yard back- stroke and O'Connor paced the 100-yard butterfly in :59.1. Austin's unit of Dick Gehlert, Frank Bagnasco, Owen Marx and captain Pete Wayne grab- bed the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:43. RECORD IN '200' Gorski set a record of 2:14 in the 200-yard individual med- ley, erasing his preliminary time of 2:15.B, and took the 100- yard breaststroke in 1:04.9. His Visitation teammate, Kuhnlein, posted a record 4:29.l in the 400-yard freestyle and also won the 200 in 2:01.3. De La Salle's 200-yard med- ley relay unit accounted for the meet's other record on a clock- ing of 1:54.4, De La Salle also had an individual winner in diver Tom Szatkowski, who tal- lied 158.25 points to 148.45 for Austin's Forsyth. The other individual winners in the 11-event program were Redford St. Mary's Paul Dowd and Benedictine's Tom Lees. Dowd covered the 50-yard free- style in :23.8 and Lees took the 100 in :53.2. Austin Sets Pace In Swim Trials Two records fell Monday as Austin. going for a fourth straight championship, 1e'd Catihc-lm League swimming pre- liminaries by qualifying nine ln- dividuals and st relay team for tlhe finals in five events.
