Austin gained its first victory of the season in a non- league game at the expense of St Marys of Jackson. The game was highlighted by Larry Rancilios seventy yard T D run on the first play from scrimmage Rancilio sprinted the length of the field ninety nine yards for the final Friar touchdown in the dying minutes of the Score: Austin O, Catholic Central 37. The Friars opened the football season against a tra- ditionally powerful and highly regarded Catholic Central squad. The veteran Shamrocks benefitted from our boys' lack of experience. Although the score indicated an awesome defeat, this was not the case as the Friars gave a good account of themselves. In playing one of the top teams in the state, our young team gained valu- able experience to be applied in later gridiron encounters. Larry Rancilio breaks away from two C. C. tacklers. fa . nes Score: Austin 7, St. Joseph 20. The initial encounter of the Central league season, the Black and White almost upset a highly rated St. Joseph aggregation. After Bishop Young's eighty yard touch- down gallop, our backfield ace, Larry Rancilio, knotted the score on a thirty-five burst through tackle. The last half was our downfall as, once again, lack of depth and experience proved to be decisive.

With Dick Howell doing an excellent job of field generalship, the Friars marched sixty yards culminated by Rancilio's eight yard plunge. As the second half began, Friar fortunes looked good since they led by virtue of an unconverted T.D. However, in the last quarter Sebastian broke the hearts of the Austin fans with a sixty-five punt return, the margin of victory. Dave Miller brin s down Sebastian as Dick Howell and Q Hank Ewald move in. .. - ,.11,.L. Score: Austin 6, Cathedral Central 12.
