Austhi Cothohc High School Austin Catholic High School is a preparatory school under the patronage of Saint Augustine. The school was founded in l952. Its priest teachers are Augustinian Fathers of the province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. The word AUSTlN goes back to medieval England, At that time and place AUSTlN was an abbreviation for AUGUSTlNE. It refers to the great Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church and one of the greatest scholars and educators of all times. In the mid-thirteenth century the Augustinian Fathers settled at Oxford Uni- versity in England. They became known as the AUSTIN FRlARS and established a very distinguished and enviable record in the world of education. So true was this that in 1326 there was a statue at Oxford University to the effect that: For the prosperity and utility of scholars studying in the Faculty of Arts, every Bachelor must dispute once and respond once each year at Austin Friars. 9.8 -Q3 T15 02 OD If! The Legend of the School Seal The center portion of the seal represents the various figures of Saint Aug- ustine. The heart burning and pierced with an arrow is symbolic of his great love for God. The crozier, cross and mitre denote his Episcopal office. The cincture is part of the Augustinian tunic. The book is symbolic of the writings of Saint Augustine and is particularly apropos in the seal of the school since, in Christian symbolism, a book has been connected with the office of teaching. The inscription Tolle Lege! Toile Lege! calls to mind the time Saint Augustine was praying for guidance and heard the voice of an Angel repeating these momentous words: Take and Read! Take and Read! It was then that he read verses thirteen and fourteen of the thirteenth chapter of Saint PauI's letters to the Romans: Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy. This is a dialogue between himself and his son, Adeodatus, who, though only fifteen years old, was a youth of extraordinary powers. ln the work the father and son address themselves to the question of the extent to which one can learn from a teacher. The main thought of the treatise is that man refers all that he understands to the inner truth which is implanted in his mind. The Teacher, therefore, only exhorts the learner to make that consultation. We do not learn through the words which sound outwardly but through the Truth which teaches within us and Christ the Truth teaches within. Thus, the name of our yearbook is MAGlSTRO and through its pages we shall endeavor to portray our theme: the dedication to Mom and Dad. 4 '-ft.:-- + if NI'I,l l L I 3 1957
