AUSTIN FIRST CATHOLIC SCHOOL pete in the Catholic League Tournament. ln the first round, Austin defeated o scrappy Servite team which had been beaten by the Friars earlier in the season. In the semi-tinal game, Austin easily defeated our neighbors, St. Paul, by a 72 to 50 score. In the final game, Austin met a determined All Saints squad and was surprised 45 to 42. The following week in the consolation game, the Friars bounced back to defeat a very powerful Cass Tech quintet. As a result of this victory, Austin's confidence and morale soared to a new high. As the State Tournament began, Austin was not conceded a chance of surviving its regional, the toughest in the state. Although they easily moved by DeLaSalIe, Highland Park was expected to curtail Austin's championship hopes. However, the team and the student body rose to the occasion and their combined effort resulted in a stunning Friar triumph. The following night Austin clinched regional honors by defeating Grosse Pointe High. In the quarter finals at Ypsilanti, fourteen bus loads of Austin students cheered the team to a victory over an underrated Fordson squad. That weekend at Lansing the biggest sports moments in the schooI's history took place. Austin overcame a seemingly insurmount- able I7 point deficit to defeat East Detroit in overtime at the semi-Hnals. Austin thereby became the first Catholic school to reach the Class A state finals. Playing one of the best teams in prep basketball history, the Friars met defeat like the champions they were. gn-'Qt
