Sometimes, it is pretty hard to say exactly what a boy feels inside . . . words come pretty slowly . . . You know me, Mom and Dad, it's hard to get a word out of me, especially when it comes to thanking you for something you have done. l know l ought to come right out . . . but . . . the words just don't seem right . . . don't seem swell enough, least they don't tell what I want them to tell. Guess they'll always come out that way . . . So . . . if you will just go beyond my chatter . . . try to read between my words, you'll find that l'm mighty proud of both of you . . . proud to say l'm your son . . . mighty glad that God figured it out that way . . . What I am trying to do is: Dedicate this edition of the Magistro to You . . . l'm trying to tell you it's the least l can do. If l had a million . . . it would be yours, I guess you know that . . . guess you've already read between the lines, guess you already know that to me you're swell . . . swell-elegant, l mean . . . and darn it all l guess l'd be an awful mess if God hadn't sent me your way . . . Anyhow . . . this edition is yours . . . all yours . . . and . . . all of me goes with it . . . Lovingly . . Your Son . . The school was founded in l952. Its priest teachers are Augustinian Fathers of the province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. The word AUSTlN goes back to medieval England, At that time and place AUSTlN was an abbreviation for AUGUSTlNE. It refers to the great Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church and one of the greatest scholars and educators of all times. In the mid-thirteenth century the Augustinian Fathers settled at Oxford Uni- versity in England. They became known as the AUSTIN FRlARS and established a very distinguished and enviable record in the world of education. So true was this that in 1326 there was a statue at Oxford University to the effect that: For the prosperity and utility of scholars studying in the Faculty of Arts, every Bachelor must dispute once and respond once each year at Austin Friars. 9.8 -Q3 T15 02 OD If! The Legend of the School Seal The center portion of the seal represents the various figures of Saint Aug- ustine. The heart burning and pierced with an arrow is symbolic of his great love for God. The crozier, cross and mitre denote his Episcopal office. The cincture is part of the Augustinian tunic. The book is symbolic of the writings of Saint Augustine and is particularly apropos in the seal of the school since, in Christian symbolism, a book has been connected with the office of teaching. The inscription Tolle Lege! Toile Lege! calls to mind the time Saint Augustine was praying for guidance and heard the voice of an Angel repeating these momentous words: Take and Read! Take and Read! It was then that he read verses thirteen and fourteen of the thirteenth chapter of Saint PauI's letters to the Romans: Let us walk honestly, as in the day: not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and impurities, not in contention and envy. But put you on 4 . G Ca ' . Q ' I' si if it 2 , V he . Q ' P e the Lord Jesus Christ. Mogistro ln the year 389 A.D. Saint Augustine composed his unusual treatise De Magistro lConcerning the Teacheri. This is a dialogue between himself and his son, Adeodatus, who, though only fifteen years old, was a youth of extraordinary powers. ln the work the father and son address themselves to the question of the extent to which one can learn from a teacher. The main thought of the treatise is that man refers all that he understands to the inner truth which is implanted in his mind. The Teacher, therefore, only exhorts the learner to make that consultation. We do not learn through the words which sound outwardly but through the Truth which teaches within us and Christ the Truth teaches within. Thus, the name of our yearbook is MAGlSTRO and through its pages we shall endeavor to portray our theme: the dedication to Mom and Dad. 4 '-ft.:-- + if NI'I,l l L I 3 1957 Q1 ' ,YNTI K 2 '11 iff? iii H: f ' ' ,my Q ,W 5 nw WH 5 fa 5' 'fix ww 'us M , , ,,:,f ,,L,, W mm z-Tum , - ,.,-,:, M- -V, v uv, W -N 4- ' fy- L - M, V v p 'W ag-,:'.:ff 5: u v -1-x5Q7,y muzvl- EH, p1,F!h1F:x1 1-N113 .g, ,,12-w 1, , ' Qu ,Q l-1E: 1 ' L-'5Mi,N ' 1F ww '.:Lm'j1 ,:!' All of them are dedicated to the noble work of assisting us on our way through life. A Message from Our Rector: Reverend John F. Galloway, O.S.A. To the Senior Class: You have now reached an important milestone in your road of lite. You came to us as boys four short years ago. We now send you forth as men . . . Austin men. Up to this present moment you have been dependent on others, your teachers for instruction and guidance, your parents for good example, advice, sympathy and understanding. Henceforth, you will be left more to your own re- sources, your destiny will be more in your own hands. How are you going to shape that destiny of yours? Each of you has dreams for the future, and those dreams will be brought to reality only through your own ettorts and by application of the principles and knowledge you have acquired here at Austin. We know that you will do this. We know that you will reflect glory on your school, and we are proud to be able to send you forth with the stamp- Austin Men. The game was highlighted by Larry Rancilios seventy yard T D run on the first play from scrimmage Rancilio sprinted the length of the field ninety nine yards for the final Friar touchdown in the dying minutes of the Score: Austin O, Catholic Central 37. The Friars opened the football season against a tra- ditionally powerful and highly regarded Catholic Central squad. The veteran Shamrocks benefitted from our boys' lack of experience. Although the score indicated an awesome defeat, this was not the case as the Friars gave a good account of themselves. In playing one of the top teams in the state, our young team gained valu- able experience to be applied in later gridiron encounters. Larry Rancilio breaks away from two C. C. tacklers. fa . nes Score: Austin 7, St. Joseph 20. The initial encounter of the Central league season, the Black and White almost upset a highly rated St. Joseph aggregation. After Bishop Young's eighty yard touch- down gallop, our backfield ace, Larry Rancilio, knotted the score on a thirty-five burst through tackle. The last half was our downfall as, once again, lack of depth and experience proved to be decisive. Score: Austin 7, DeLaSalle 13. The DeLaSalle game proved to be the one in which our team reached their peak efficiency. With Dick Howell doing an excellent job of field generalship, the Friars marched sixty yards culminated by Rancilio's eight yard plunge. As the second half began, Friar fortunes looked good since they led by virtue of an unconverted T.D. However, in the last quarter Sebastian broke the hearts of the Austin fans with a sixty-five punt return, the margin of victory. Dave Miller brin s down Sebastian as Dick Howell and Q Hank Ewald move in. .. - ,.11,.L. Score: Austin 6, Cathedral Central 12. Under the worst possible conditions our varsity lost their final game of the year to a fired-up Cathedral team. Cathedral foiled the Friars bid for the third place position in the final Central league standings. Mike Forrester ended a sixty yard drive with an eight yard run for Austin's only counter. In the semi-tinal game, Austin easily defeated our neighbors, St. Paul, by a 72 to 50 score. In the final game, Austin met a determined All Saints squad and was surprised 45 to 42. The following week in the consolation game, the Friars bounced back to defeat a very powerful Cass Tech quintet. As a result of this victory, Austin's confidence and morale soared to a new high. As the State Tournament began, Austin was not conceded a chance of surviving its regional, the toughest in the state. Although they easily moved by DeLaSalIe, Highland Park was expected to curtail Austin's championship hopes. However, the team and the student body rose to the occasion and their combined effort resulted in a stunning Friar triumph. The following night Austin clinched regional honors by defeating Grosse Pointe High. In the quarter finals at Ypsilanti, fourteen bus loads of Austin students cheered the team to a victory over an underrated Fordson squad. That weekend at Lansing the biggest sports moments in the schooI's history took place. Austin overcame a seemingly insurmount- able I7 point deficit to defeat East Detroit in overtime at the semi-Hnals. Austin thereby became the first Catholic school to reach the Class A state finals. Playing one of the best teams in prep basketball history, the Friars met defeat like the champions they were. gn-'Qt T0 REACH CLASS A FINAL The tournament was a great success.
