When I must leave you for a little while. Please do not grieve and shed wild tears And hug your sorrow to you through the years. But start out bravely with a gallant smile; And for my sake and in my name Live on and do all the things the same. Feed not your loneliness on empty days. But fill each waking hour in useful wavs. Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer And I in turn will comfort vou and hold you near; And never, never be afraid to die, For 1 am waiting for you in the sky! Helen Steiner Rice It is with a profound sense of loss that we, the Senior Class at Au Sable Valley, dedicate our year- book to Charles Ron Napper. This is the best way we have to express our affection and appreciation to a dedicated teacher and friend. ADMINISTRATION STAFF CENTRAL OFFICE Mr. James H. LaGoy Superintendent Mrs. Donna Douglas-Account Clerk, Mrs. Maryann Denton- Secretary to Superintendent, Mr. A. As always, the teachers in this department have managed to keep themselves well informed on these proposed changes and are priding themselves on being “slightly ahead of the pack.” Mrs. Joan Gray ART DEPT Our New Masters of A.V.C.S., Mrs. Changelo and Mrs. Dunham, teach students more than just the basics of art. Mrs. Changelo teaches Studio in Art 1 and 2, Drawing and Painting 1 and 2, Crafts 1 and 2, Advanced Drawing and Painting 1 and 2, and eighth grade class, and inde- pendent study course. Robare ENGLISH DEPT. The dynamic eclecticism with in the English Department precludes a definitive extensile statement of their prioritizations. However, curriculum development demonstrates a Grammer-wise orientation in grades 7-9, with a branch-out toward Humanism in grades 10-12. This is intended as an obfuscation of the issue but is meant to clarify it in a style representative of the diverse mentalities within the department. SCIENCE DEPT The ever faithful experimentalists of A.V.C.S.—our science staff. Brave Mrs. Baker and Mr. Shambo, in charge of Biology classes and other General Sci- ence Courses. Mr. Robare has even in- curred greater danger by teaching a new course— Introduction to Physical Sci- ence. Mr. Kennedy teaches Juniors and Seniors American Studies and Ad- vanced Placement in American History, while Mr. Cowen, who teach- es 10,11, and 12, delves into deeper stuff: Anthropology, Psychology, World History, and an American History class. Mr. Hogle teaches 9th grade social studies, but also reaches into democracy with courses for 9 to 12 in Problems in American Democracy, Media, and American History. In the Middle School, Mr. Pomerville teaches 8th grade American Studies and 9th grade social studies emphasizing New York State and American History. And last, but not least, Miss Haney teaches New York State History to 7th graders. Love and Marriage, Child Care, Nursing, and Fashion are covered in the half year courses. Mrs. Irwin is now working to get certificates for good child care for her students to aid in babysitting jobs. MATH DEPT. Computers hnve taken over the A.V.C.S. math- ematics department! Our new computer room holds six Commodore micro- computers plus other valuable machinery. SOPHOMORES Sophomores at AVCS have experienced Commons for the first time. Most tenth year students have also been exposed to World History, Biology Labs and Julius Caesar. The students in the Business Depart- ment have taken a progressive step forward this year by chartering a new chapter of the FUTURE BUSI- NESS LEADERS OF AMERICA. This group has had a more than ac- tive year, having taken part in an overnight trip to Cobleskill to com- pete in the High School Day Compe- tition, planned and carried out a suc- cessful Bingo Party for the residents of Country Gardens (Where they gave as prizes ceramic gifts that they themselves had made), conducted a public-opinion survey to determine feelings of area residents toward our area television news coverage, planned and carried out a successful Christmas Party, and (hopefully at this writing) will have earned enough money to participate in the New York State FBLA Conference in the spring at the Concord. Our endur- ing typists were Marilyn Minogue and Missy Sheldrake. Mrs. Darling did much of our proof-reading (but don’t blame her for the typos). The art work was contributed by Shawn Wolfe and Michael Murcray. Many photographs were taken by Jay Ward and Lisa McDowell while additional pictures were provided by Paul Maicus and Tom Randall of the communi- ty. Most importantly, the leg work, copy, finals, helping photographers, sales etc. we owe to the staff members: Lisa McDowell, Barney Mitchell, Garland Gaddy, Hope Po- quette, Valerie Moody, Tracey Mehan, Teresa Winslow, Ed Winslow, Maria Winslow and Amber Hawthorne.
