C, Seuia 611155 flistvry As we open The Treasure Chest, unforgettable me m or ies of the twelve happiest years of our lives come to our minds, years we spent together in school. . - , aw V-'Ju Our History began when, shyly, a group of youngsters entered school in 1941. Then, we did not realize what a struggle we would have to endure for the next twelve years. Yes, we had wonderful times to- gether. There are probably many incidents in each of our minds that we cherish. One, two, five, eight years went by, yet there were some added to this outstanding class and some taken away but we did not give up, we continued to work for a higher goal. The fall of 1949 began our Freshman year in High School. We entered High School with an enrollment of 48. There were two groups of the Freshman classes. One group was under the direction of Mr. Brown and the other under the direction of Mrs. Brown. First of all we elected our class officers which were: 9A: President, Joe l-lollowellg Vice President, Joyce Broomeg Secretary and Treasurer, Ann Bonner, Re- porter, Patsy Rowe. 9B: President, Hubert Brothers, Vice President, Willie Lupton, Secretary and Treas- urer, Olivia Hollowellg Reporter, Kay Cuthrell. We want to remind you that this was a very intelligent class. Several of our students became eligible for the Beta Club. And too, some were outstanding enough to be selected as cheerleadersg they were: Joyce Broome, Patsy Rowe, Murray Beacham. Though the Freshman year was hard for each of us, we succeeded in adapting ourselves to high school, after many trying days. Proud of completing the Freshman year, we now were Sophomores . Mr. D. A. Miller was our class sponsor. Our class officers were: President, Willie Luptong Vice President, E. B. Coxg Secretary and Treasurer, Sarah Cuthrellg Reporters, Bunne Gillikin and Murray Beacham. Many of the students were able to help make up the B asketba ll squad. The most exciting event of that year was when Murray Beacham, Joe Hollowell, Joe Sadler, John Hooker, Joe Hardy, Hubert Brothers, Willie Lupton. Joyce Broome, Pat Guthrie, Lillian Vendrick, Patsy Rowe, Bunne Gillikin, Frances Rowe and Lorita Lewis were selected as waiters and waitresses for the Junior-Senior Banquet, In 1951, we enrolled as Juniors and our director was Mrs. Bertha Adams. We elected our class officers as follows: President, E. B. Cox, Vice President, John Hooker: Secretary, Olivia Hollowellg Treasurer, Joyce Broome. Right away plans were begun for a Junior Play and other means to make the Junior-Senior Banquet a success. After weeks of hard work, Crazy House was presented under the direction of Mrs. Bertha Adams. Those that participated were: E. B. Cox, Lillian Vendrick, Willie Lupton, Taylor Brantley, Hubert Brothers, Murray Beacham, Charlie Shackleford, Pat Wadsworth, Edna Carawan, Joyce Broome, Bunne Gillikin, Patsy Rowe. The theme of our Banquet was A Circus that proved to be a success. Bob Jones and his orchestra ren- dered beautiful music until twelve o'clock. Class rings were ordered and inJani1ary we received them, which made everybody proud. For the Senior Graduation exercises, marshals selected from the class were: Chief, E. B. Cox, Charlie Shackleford, Olivia Hollowell, Ann Bonner, Joyce Broome, Patsy Rowe. Before we knew it another year had come and gone and we now were dignified Seniors, almost before we were ready to take the shock. With a big year ahead of us, we first began making plans to prepare an- other edition of The Treasure Chest. The Annual Staff consists of: Editor, Olivia Hollowellg Associ- ate, Ann Bonner, Business Manager, Charlie Shackleford, Advertising Committee, Joyce Broome, Patsy Rowe, Joe Sadler, Joe I-lollowell , Bunne Gilliking Girls' Sports, Lorita Lewisg Boys' Sports, Murray Beachamg Prophet, Pat Wadsworth, Last Will and Testament, Frances Roweg His tor i a n , Reba Tunstall. We are planning on the greatest Senior Play that has ever been presented. Most of all other activities we are looking forward to that graduation. ln later years all of us will look back on our few years in high school and truthfully say that they were the happiest years of our lives. .Y Reba Tunstall Smit? 6111.95 P aplzecy As I stood in the kitchen of my home the other day, busily cooking supper for my doctor husband and four kids, I was rudely interrupted by someone impatiently ringing the doorbell. Since I hated to be in- terrupted from cooking, I took my own time in answering the door. When finally I opened the door, a foot flew in and almost knocked me down. Even before I looked up I knew this was a salesman. Very angered, I looked up and saints ahoy! If there didn't stand Willie Lupton, saying as hard as he could, Madame, I have some of the world's best egg beaters, the very thing you have been looking for all your life! As he paused for breath, he recognized me. I invited him in and asked him about the Seniors of '53. He had been looking out for Willie Clyde just as I had been looking out for Pat, se he didn't know what had happened to any of them. After he had gone, I still sat, dazed by the fact that I hadn't even tried to find out what success each Senior had made. The more I thought, the more ashamed Ibecame of myself. I realized, though, that there is a time for making amends and I started to make some then. Yes, I packed my bags and headed for Aurora. When I arrived at Aurora, I went around to see each of the parents of my school chums, and I listened while they told of each Senior's success. Ann Bonner has taken over her daddy's old store, since he moved to another one. Merrian Dixon and Kenneth Gillikin are owners of an automobile factory where they are building a new car called, American de Luxe. David Langley now builds airplanes, while Marshall Hall is content to just fly them. Olivia Hollowell, Gladys Parson and Reba Tunstall have become some of the best secretaries ever to come from Aurora. Joe Bennett and Bobby Walker have gone into the mule-buying business. They make real good money, too. Was I surprised to find out who had replaced Johnny Ray in the singing world! Yes, Murray-Beacham. Patsy Rowe and Sonny Gillikin have really made a success in the field of athletics. Joe Sadler has won several silver cups, too, in track. ' Joe Hardy has really done some work since leaving schoolg yes, he wrote a new version of Hambone. Louise O'Ham has had a cafe built on Toler Avenue at Blounts Creek and is really rolling in the dough. Rudy Lupton, James Lewis and Jesse Tripp each are in a different branch of the service. Janet Selby is in the WAVES, She really is traveling around. Lorita Lewis thinks there is nothfng half as nice as the beauty shop she has set up at Aurora. Hubert Brothers is a radio announcer for WRRF. E. B. Cox and Charlie Shackelford are making a new dictionary. I believe Webster's will soon be re- placed by the new Coxford edition-. Ila Mercer is almost as good at ice skating as Barbara Ann Scott. Taylor Brantley, Billy Kinnion and J. L. Overton have really taken over the potato farming near Aurora. They are making so much money that they are about to buy everything. Bunne Gillikin teaches English at Aurora, Marian Rowe teaches Typing there. Joe Lee Hollowell is making real good in the furniture business at Royal. Frances Rowe is a housewife and lives in Washington. Roy Bonner has really built a nice night club here in Aurora. Joyce Broome has settled down to a nice quiet life as a housewife. John Hooker owns a farm near Aurora and is really making money. Would you say I was pleased with the things I found out? Well, Iwas-. They have really made some changes. We, the Senior Class of 1953, realize that in our last hours we must leave nothing undone. With this in mind we draw up this last will and testament. We have always been of sound minds, perfect bodies and good intentions, persistent in our wishes, apt thinkers and great talkers. Since we are also liberal with our possessions, both material and intellectual, we do not wish to leave this school bereft of sameg therefore, we do hereby, happily and willingly, be- queath some of our possessions to the faculty and student body, knowing that they will grieve less over our departure if we leave behind some mementoes of value that they will cherish. We do hereby declare and publish this our last will and testament: To our principal, Mr. Bright, we wish to express our thanks and deep appreciation for his untiring efforts in helping us through the trying years of high school. For the Juniors we leave our good looks, knowledge and our love for Aurora High. To the Sophomores we leave our talent and promptness and hope that they will use it as well as we have. To the Freshmen we leave our quiet manners. Since Bunne Gillikin has a few inches of height to spare, she has decided to leave it to Betty Cornett and Joe Lewis. As we all know, Joyce Broome has a pleasing person ality -- plenty to share with Winnie Gillikin. Ann Bonner and Pat Wadsworth would like to will Ruth Toler and Mary Bennett a few of their extra pounds. Frank Cuthrell should consider himself very fortunate as Bobby Walker has decided to leave him some of his curly hair. Watch out, Eleanor, someone might beat your time. Joe Bennett leaves his ability to tell tall tales to Dale Lewis. Joe Hollowell and Joe Sadler have decided to leave their ability t0 play basketball to Red Bennett. This ability plus his own should make him the star player next year. Marshall Hall would like to leave Edward Norville some of his cute baby ways. Maybe Marshall will act his age now. To Terry Beacham, his twin brother Murray leaves his ability to laugh at nothing. Gladys Parson wills her ability to blush to Billie Spruill. Sonny Gillikin leaves his appetite to Rogers Midyette in the hope that he will make good use of it. Hubert Brothers and Patsy Rowe leave their popularity to Tony Womble and Rupert Mixon. E. B. Cox and Charlie Shackelford would like to will their ability to get A+'s to Cleon Kinnion and Billy Bowen. Olivia Hollowell leaves her jokes to Mary Price. Frances Rowe leaves her love and faithfulness to one man to Glena Daye and Jean Hall. Reba Tunstall wills her pretty dimples to Shirley Deal. Ila Mercer leaves her ability to catch the class 's most eligible bachelor to Annie Bell Henries. Janet Selby has decided to leave her A's in shorthand to Ann Betts. Joe Hardy and John Hooker would like to leave their way with women to Walter Mixon and Jack Brickhouse. Merrion Dixon and Billy Kinnion leave their ability to play the guitar to Gerald Hill. Marian Rowe leaves Byran Bonner her winning smile. To Lillian Cayton, Louise O'Ham leaves her artistic ability. Lorita Lewis wills her title of Class Flirt to Jane Gerard. Watch out, boys! Taylor Brantley wills his school bus to Fred Alfred. Don't be too rough with it, Fred. David Langley and Jesse Tripp leave their bashful ways to Johnny Canady and Donald Bennett. To Elbert Lane is given Rudy Lupton's trick of looking innocent when caught in mischief. Roy Bonner leaves his habit of dozing during classes to Bobby Potter. To Kenneth Lewis, J. L. Overton leaves his farming skill.
