As it comes closer it takes the shape of a hawk. Suddenly it dives and swoops through the annual w1ndow,landing precariously on a moving type- writer. ' It's Horace Mann Hawk, the annual staff says in unison. Let's invite him to join us in a tour of the year's activities. To the joy of the staff Horace agrees, and so they proceed to tell him how it all began. You see, Horace, in the beginning there were three schools. The Hearding was the first to be built in 1911, the Johnson in 1914, and finally our own High School in 1922. When they were built the total enrollment was 1,106, but during the following years it decreased to 360. Now, our enrollment has in- creased to approximately 1700 students. The Gertrude Boase Elementary school was built in the new growing community of Hoyt Lakes to elevate Aurora's enrollment. The main attraction now are the buildings you see at the top of this page. These architectural drawings are the two new additions to our school. The first beautiful edifice houses our new gymnasium, cafeteria, music and industrial arts departments. The second includes the commercial department and adminis- trative offices. That is a brief summary of our schools history, Horace. Shall we joumey on through the years' acti vities? Four of starting five of last years team were gone. Kesti, Grivette, and Polus were the only lettermen that saw tournament action last year. The Hawks won five straight, with Rod Kesti becoming the top scorer in range competition. AURORA CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Hi, Horace, come on over and meet our great basketball team of last year. Boy, that was a year to remember! We went all the way to represent Region 7 in the state classic. Only twice before had the Hawks been down the state tournament, in 1923 when they took the championship and 1927 when they won the Region. The Blackhawks ran over every opponent they met last year in the District 27 toumament and the semi-finals of the region meet. In the region finals against Cloquet, the Blackhawks were almost pinned down, but they came through with flying colors with a score of 59-58, after the thrilling overtime. Up until the Cloquet game, the Blackhawks had managed a very irnpresslve 85 point average for all the games played during the tournament. Yes, we had a great gang of boys on our team last year, with two great coaches, Tom Reagen, head coach and James Kuelbs, assistant coach. The Blackhawks were defeated by Minneapolis Roosevelt in the opening round of the playoffs at the State finals. Despite the loss, the Blackhawksgave the new state champion Roosevelt team the toughest battle they had in achiev- ing the state crown. Yes, last year is a year that will go down in history. Classes and private organizations entered floats. After the parade we all stomped to theauditorium to see who the king and queen would be. The suspense was broken when David Grivette and Vyna Kurnpula were crowned. The attendants were football players and the girls selected by the student body. After a rip-roaring pep fest on Thursday night the Blackhawks rolled over the Tower Eagles. The dance cli- maxed the festivities which were all very successful.
