DRAG BACK My name is Kay Beloy. I am the new chief of police at the Erie Taconite Plant. It was 8 o'c1ock that morning in 1974, when I arrived in Aurora to investigate a hunch. I breezed into town in my Essex Super Six. I saw Dick Cary leaning against the bank--fHe was holding it up.J But never mind --I was looking for something unusual. 8:11--I walked into the C'est si Bon Cafe managed by Josephine Zeleznikar and Gabriella Peterka, I saw the waitress, Janice Waananen, with a big grin on her face. I asked her why and she said she got a raise--45426 an hour, fDon-ta -don-da.J Ah--something to investigate--why she got a raise, Outside the Cafe on a ladder I recognized Dale Johnson, a famous artist, painting a sign to advertise the floor show, featuring Wild Wease1 Weulander, and the singing waitress, Francine Yer- ich. 8:29 fDon-ta-don-da.j I heard a loud crash, I turned around and saw Dale on the ground. Down the street breezed Dr, I, T. Dahlin Jr.with his little black bag. Right behind him trotted Annamarie Brown, drumming up business for Beaver's Mortuary. 8:07--I walked up the street past Raymo's Sauna , managed by Raymond Leiviska. A sign hung on the door-- A Penny a Pour. Inside I noticed The Kid , Gerald Mattson, training for his grudge battle with Slam Bam Cuma Cazin, over the Queen of 3-D Gladys Ranta. Looking above the door I saw another sign advertising Swedish Massages by June Johnson who in her spare time plays piano in Robert Skerbitz's Lazy Four. Also starring in this orchestra is the drummer, Bob Olson, and his assistant Jack Williams, an excellent music stand. Featured this week is Harry James Trygstad and her golden trumpet. 10 A.M., I can't pin anything on anyone yet. Passed the Beauty Shop, Genivieve Halonen was pinning up Mrs. Russel Neimi's, fLucille Andersonj hair. Spoke too soon, something's being pinned. 10:10--I dropped into LaVerne's Levis Shop-- Attire for Men of Extinction. I needed anew cap and also a pair of levis. I bumped into Don-ta -don-da Holter, After picking him up I set him down and asked him what he was doing. He said he was looking for a pair of size fourteen cowboy boots for his next trip to his Palo ranch, 10:30--I jumped into my Essex Six and breezed down the street. I was picked up for speeding by Patrol man? Ed Rebrovich, Didn't get a ticket though--old friends. He had his hands full leading Vera Kari's Nursery School pupils across the street, 10:45--my gas guage showed empty so Iwent to the Noriwell operated by Walter Nori. The gas station attendant was none but--Janet Nesselroad. 11:00--I sauntered into Pom Pom's Shoe Shine, managed by Jim Plevell. Inflation! 10d for shining my badge. 11:34--I went to Palo's Old Folk's Home to check on the situation. It is managed by Gerry Parvi- nen. She was kind enough to give me lunch. 12:56--on the way back I passed the S.O.S. Army Camp where Janet Sarberg is a torch singer with her eyes on all the guys. 1:07--I needed a rest so Iwent to a show house run by Louie Plevell, the Lonesome Lover. In the lobby I bought some popcorn from Estelle Holmen. The show starred Janice Zuponcic as Jenny Lind in the Life of Jenny Lind. 3: O5--after the movie Iwent to Prescriptions for Pessimistic People, managed by Ralph Pessy Pesonen. I needed an Alka-Seltzer--that popcorn was too much. 3:17--across the street on the diamond was Shirley Lakela's State Champs, practicing for the world series. Angela Scheuring, the star pitcher, was warming up. Shirley's team, I understand, has been chargedwith being a monoply. Her case is up before the Supreme Court, It's a lost case though, Mr. Rukavina is the Chief Justice. I looked at my trusting Ingersoll, 3:45. Just enough time to get back to Erie to punch the time clock and tell my Secretary, Joanne Putzel, to call it quits. My hunch didn't pay off. fDon-ta- don-da.J 14
