Among these are more classrooms and facilities for an increasing enrollment: maintenance and improvement of school property and grounds: replacements and additions to the school furniture and equip- ment: and adequate salaries for teachers and janitors: and all this on a limited bud- get. The outstanding improvement the past year l1as been to the athletic field. The lloard of liducation is indebted to the Class of '4S and the Aurora Rotary Club for tak- ing the initiative in this project, with help from other organizations. X form-letter was sent by the class 0-Hicers ot lil-L8 to the presidents of Senior Classes ot S139 to 19-LT asking their opinion of us- 1 IQ the Senior Gift Fund for lighting the football field. Their answers were, in effect: Mlm. The Senior Gift Fund amounted to Yff1,544.ti3. The total cost of lights came to 3F4,635.T6, which included lights, poles, cost of linemen and equipment. The breakdown on the cost on lights is as follows: The General Ifllectric Company, SlF2.!lS1.48: The Vopper Company. lnc., for poles, 2l51,tltl-1.451 lndiana l'ublic Service, 32483: Lille t'onstrut-tion Crew of the l.l'.S., 3B625.0tl. The A.H.S.A.A. and the lfloard of Education added to the Senior Gift Fund to take care of the cost of lights. The fencing of the field, the grading, seed- ing and bringing water to tl1e field was fin- anced by tl1e Board of Education at a cost of rE1,50U.62. The Aurora Rotary Club took the initia- tive in sponsoring the bleacher seats with contributions of 2Hil,82!l.l0. Other contribu- tors were the Lions Club, i'F1S0.00g the Yet- erans of Foreign Wars, 3'510tl.00g the Ameri- can Legion, SHS-L0.tltl-a total of Ell5I.!,1-19.10. Il.x1, li. lbmvnu S11pcr:'ntf'.':1ir nf One section of bleacher seats have been de- livered. The plan was to sell the seats at 3520.00 each. ln return, the donor would have a reserved seat for all home games for the next three years. ln the gymnasium, improvements consist of a broadcasting booth and additional seats above the door. Several pieces of equipment have been added to various departlnents including five new typewriters in the commercial depart- ment, a metal lathe in industrial arts. two musical instruments for the band and a new urinal in the public rest room in the High School building. Among the repairs for Aurora Schools was the repair of the chimney at lligh School, and the boiler in the North Build- ing. Uaulking and window stripping were applied to the windows in the entire North Building by the t'hamberlain tlompany of America. Like all oth- er freshmen heretofore, we were unacquain- ted with, what seemed to ns, a very large place. We were caught in wrong rooms, which was humiliating. The upperclassmen regarded us as greenies. However, we got off to a good start by electing our class of- ficers: president, Joe Hansclibachg vice- president, Don Marksberry: secretary, lion- na Borgman: and treasurer, Hill Hackman. After the initiations were over, we had a very successful year. We thought, Oh, -if cafe zrere just 'H1I1JCl'Clll88HlCll.lu But tl1e year sped by comparatively fast and good old summer vacation was l1ere before we knew it and we could forget school studies. In September, 1946, we were a little bit closer to our goal as we entered the sopho- more class. This year, much to our joy, even though we were not seniors nor even juni- ors, we were 11ot regarded as green fresh- men a11y longer. This year we elected our officers as follows: president, Bill Back- man, vice-president, David Scudderg secre- tary, Vesta Peters, treasurer, Donald Ha- ker. XVe had a float and entered it in the Aurora Farmer's Fair. lt won first prize which made us all very happy. It was t'The World of Peace. lVe had a very successful school dance and presented tl1e Christmas 1l1t'll.1J1'0g'1'2l1l1 which went over with 110 one missing lines or cues. Even though we were still underclassmen, we were a little more acquainted with Aurora High School, its faculty, and the various IICNV students. We left school that May with a most glorious feeling, Newt year :cc will be zlpperclass- men. .lt lustfu In September of 19-LT, when we came back we were saddened by tl1e death of our well- admired principal, Mr. Wegener. lVe, like all who had attended Aurora High School, 1nour11ed his death. This year Mr. Flick fill- ed this vacancy and was a successful prin- cipal. We were excited, from tl1e beginning about our class rings and the Junior-Senior l'rom. Class officers elected were president, Don Marksberry, vice-president, Bill Back- mang secretary, Charlotte llennerlineg and treasurer, Joe Ranschbach. lVe were thrill- ed whe11 we heard, Pay the rernzaining flue nnmuntt Ill!-ll you, may get your class 1'ings. ' XVe were now, not only upperclassmen, but sporting class 1-ings as well. The seniors all looked at ou1- rings, and our faces beamed with joy, for we thought our rings were the prettiest yet. lVe presented the Thanksgiv- ing program which went over quite well. XVith the assistance of our sponsors, Miss Coats, Mr. Abshire, and Mr. Gabbard, our Junior-Senior l'l'0lIl was superb. XVe decor- ated tl1e gymnasium to represent Stardust and had an excellent orchestra. A very ex- citing moment was when Hill Hackman crowned Martha Schmeltzer t,lucen of the Bull. This was a very successful year for everyone. We left school with a wonderful feeling. lVe came back for the last time in Sep- tember, 19-LS, with a total of sixty-four sen- iors. lVe were really a happy group, for we were seniors and turning the last leaf of a ftmrever-to-be-relnembered period in our lives. Ulass officers elected were: president, Dale Husseg vice-president, Joe B2lIlSl'lllltll'll, sec- retary, Floyd Langon, and treasurer, Ilon- na Borgman. Now that graduation is al- most here, the goal we have been striving to reach for four years is bet'o1-e us. We are happy, but we are also rather sad. For some seniors, school days are over: for others, college is ahead. lYhen we seniors saw- the last basketball game and football game, rea- lizing that it was tl1e last we would partici- pate in, we were rather sad. We felt quite grown up and proud when we had our senior photos taken, selected our Annual Board with Blanche Scholle heading the list, and most of all, when we ordered our announcements and our caps and gowns. The time is almost here and our advice to all underclassmen is 11ot to be too anxious, for some day you will be seniors. too. For us seniors, a career and the art of becoming really grown up and accepting real responsibility in life lies before us. Al- ready some of the senior girls have begun to accept responsibilities, as can well be seen by the tll2llll0lltlS which are being worn by Peggy Schofstoll, .loan Miller, Delores Lyons, Margie Hastings, Doris Boggs, and t'lara Long. As we were nearing Aurora we noticed a big night club called Lllh'Clflf?ll'uv,' deciding to stop and have a coke we were greeted by none other than llave Scudder, the owner. He asked us to stay for the floor show, compliments of the house. The biggest surprise of the evening was the entertainment, that lovely torch- singer, Connie Scharf, who did a splendid dance routine. Then Dick lletmer, world-- famous comedian, kept us in a constant up- 1-oar of side-splitting laughter, with hilar- ious acts. Further up Main Street we come to Mai-ksberry and l'Ill6S1I12lIl'S Motorcycle Shop. Seeing Blanche Scholle, we stop her for some of the tow11 gossip. She finds out a lot of news by operating Blanche's Beauty Sa- lon. XVe hear that Vic Grieve and lllayton Bushman are all-star halfbacks at Indiana l'niversi'ty. But the biggest shock comes when we hear that Ed Nelson is the warden at Sing-Sing. Well. isn't that where every- body said he would end up? Norman Brown looks very contented sit- ting in front of his l'ool Hziom. Business must be good. Returning after his stay as a Lieutenant Commander in the Vnited States Navy. he taught for a year and a halt' tI!I4T'4Sj. He was forced to leave Aurora because of ill health. In a letter to the school he tells us of l1is new position as manager ot' the George Lander-'s Music Company, located in Vlarinda, lowa. Ut' course. we all missed him very much, hut knew he had to leave and so tried to express our feelings hy giving hin1 a going-away party, at which he was presented with a Silver Uonserve, engraved with the words: ,'l.ll.N. .llusir Ilcprlrt- arent, 1949. The t'hoir, Girls' Glee t'lnh, and the Boys' Glee Club are under the direction of Miss Smith. She has done a wonderful jolt with these groups. This last year she has had a new ven- ture under her wing..that of the Music Appreciation Class. Their studies range from the composers of the tenth century to the present day. Of course. they learn to do a hit of writing themselves. l'roof of Miss Smith's ahility is the fact that her groups are in demand for many social functions. ula1414.G' ,fm Mr. Crocker arrived the second semester to take charge of the Hand aml all has gone smoothly under his capahle gui- dance. There was an addition to the family soon after his arrival. A little girl of five pounds, ten ounces, to he called Marsha Lynn. 'l'he Hand has worked very hard and the year has been a full one. All appreciate the zest with which Mr. Crocker goes at his work as director. Page l orty-7'h1'ee igx J lst Row: Carolyn Longcamp, Marilyn Evans, Clarol Rice. Joyce Graham, Mary Jackson, Ann Olcott. Seventy of you are members of this 81st class to have graduated from Aurora High School, making a total of 2,261 Alumni memlners. While you are the 81st class to graduate, you are only the eighth to graduate in a flood year-a flood that has reached a height of 64 feet or more, which is enough to cause the schools to he closed. The previous senior classes to have experienced zz year hampered by a flood are the classes of 1883, 1884, 1907, 1913, 1933, 1937, and 1945. Page Nl'l'l'Ilf,U-Ffllll' This Aurora High School Alumni organization, which was organized in 1896, is 52-years-old. One of its members, Miss Julia Spaeth, of the class of 1889, has not missed an alumni reception since its organization. The class of 1921 is still the oldest class untouched by death. Are there any members of this class here tonight? As near as can be ascertained from the records, tl1e oldest living graduate is Flora Platter Van Houten, of the class of 1876. The oldest class represented tonight is the class of 1889, of which Julia Spaeth is the member present. Can anyone cor- rect me on that? The graduate traveling the greatest distance to attend the reception tonight is Irene Miller, 1916, who came from Fort Wayne. Seventeen Alumni have sons or daughters joining our ranks tonight. Thev are: 25 -, William Ilartnall-son of Jean Neukom Dartnall of the class of 1918. Thomas Meyerdson of Anzia Owens Meyer of the class of 1924. Charles Nieman-son of Hazel Klingelhoffer Nieman of the class of 1922 and the late Stanley Nieman, also of the class of 1922. Dale Reuner-son of Lauretta Steffen Renner of the class of 1915.
