AURORA BOREALIS 1978 Theme P- 1 Activities P- 9 Organizations P- 27 Sports P- 43 Academics P- 73 People P- 90 Ads P- 141 DEDICATION We, the Seniors of 1978, in the final year of Aurora Senior High School, dedicate this book to all Students of Aurora Senior High, past and present......... Since this is the final year of Aurora Senior High School, the memories of high school activities are foremost in the minds of many people of Aurora in addition to the Graduating Seniors of 1978. Many people are remembering things such as the King and Queen of the 1961 Prom, or the dances at the Prom of 1963, or 1957 when the Farmer's Fair Queen was from Aurora, and anyone who has ever worked on an Annual can sympathize with the Annual Board of 1914. 4 Although the activities are similar to ours today, many of the groups have changed in their appearance over the years, for example the bands of 1922 and 1937 look very different from the way the band looks today. Also, the Student Council of 1937, the Boy's and Girl's Glee Club of 1937, the Class Play Cast of 1915 and the Homecoming Court of 1957 appear somewhat different from those of today. Wonder what the Class of 2014 will think of our jeans clad generation!! 5 k — 'v ' rl Girl's Sports aren't anything new to A.H.S. either. There was a Girl's Basketball Team in 1914. The Baseball Team looked a little different in 1915. However, the ___ Football Teams of 1956 and 1960 could be Yi easily mistaken for teams of more recent years. That was then, This is now ... t i 0 ■ p 8 18 U Another aspect of the school that has changed over the years is the building ... In 1914-1915 the high school building was the present junior high school. Then in 1937 shortly after the present building was completed the town of Aurora flooded and water came up high enough to even flood the school. s ACTIVITIES 9 1955 Prom What would we have done without our activities?!! 10 11 Boys' Intramurals And God said, Boys, let Jay have the ball. TOMORROW MOTTO FROM THE END SPRINGS NEW BEGINNINGS 1978 CLASS HISTORY As 1973-4 freshmen, we came from Manchester, North Side, St. Mary's, and St. John's to start our high school career. The year was spent doing homework, experiencing new things, participating in sports and clubs, and getting to know teachers and fellow students. After being promoted to sophomores, we became a part of the senior high school. That year we had 21 students admitted to National Honor Society and 43 girls to Sunshine. We also started our money drive for our prom by selling M M's. When our junior year rolled around and we were finally upperclassmen, a year of fun, work, and success awaited us. This was a year for sports. The boys basketball team went to the Semi-State to beat the favorite; a first EVER! The girls basketball team won the Sectional and the EIAC title, also a first for AHS. The varsity football squad had a winning season of 7-3 as did the first year girl's golf team at 6-4. The baseball team went on winning going on to the Regional with a season record of 21-11. This was also the year of our special occasion; the Prom. The theme selected was Stairway to Heaven and the date set for May 6 We had a dinner and dance at Stouffer's Inn followed by more food and dancing at Beverly Hills Supper Club. We were very fortunate to have had an early prom as Beverly Hills burned to the ground just three weeks later. With so much excitement behind us our senior year arrived. It started off with a bang as Scott Good was selected Farmer's Fair King. School spirit was reawakened as our Red Devils took to the floor again. Student Council sponsored a Frisch's Big Boy Day offering Big Boy's for lunch. Then it came: The Blizzard of '78. AHS and surrounding schools survived an extended vacation of 14 snow days. When school resummed in February, things were slow and dark. All activities were cancelled because of the coal shortage and lights and heat were turned halfway back. In March two great victories occurred. The Red Devils won the Sectional title for the third time straight beating Lawrenceburg for the last time EVER, 61-57. The second victory was won by the Aurora, Dillsboro, and Moores Hill student councils. The school board had announced that Highlanders would be the mascot for the new South Dearborn High School, to the horror of students and parents alike. The council members heartily fought the board and won in a 6-1 vote. Knights was the students' choice. April passed and with May came the Spring Concert, the Athletic Banquet, the Ideal Lady Tea, the Band Concert, and finally graduation. Though for most it was a joyous occasion, the day was tinted with sadness. But, as Mark Fiedeldey said in his valedictorian address, We have come to the end of our reign as seniors and now must step down from the throne. But unlike our predecessors, we will keep our crown, for we are the last of a proud breed. Douglas Jay Baer Choir Varisty 1 Concert 2,3,4 Swing 3,4 Honor Roll 1,2,3,4 Nat'l Hon. R A L L Y THE VALLEY Looks like you've got it in the bag, eh boys? This friendly beaver from a nearby stream was kind enough to help change a flat. 158 ETCETERA Willy demonstrates proper method to get instructors attention. Hmmm . . Hi, I'm Dave Bess and I want to be your principal! I've decided to take up smoking; my doctor said I wasn't getting enough tar. 159 WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE GRADUATE Go now, young graduate, down that proverbial path of life, secure in the knowledge that you have gained the necessary tools through your studies and the vital wisdom blessed upon you by your masters, you may now advance to newer highs. But, choose your roads carefully, making sure they do not cross, for we all know that crossed-roads are dangerous places indeed. And, as always dear friends, heed the words of our devine leader: Always . . . take a litter-bag in your car. It doesn't take up much room, and if it gets full, you can just toss it out the window. (The Maharishi Guru, i.e. Steve Martin from Let's Get Small ) AND NOW, THE CLOSING WORD . .. We, the editors and staff of the 1978 AURORA BOREALIS, would just like to say that bringing you this yearbook has been a pleasure. Regardless of the fact that we missed all the deadlines by weeks, had numerous photos lost, stolen, destroyed (pick one), had no permanent place to work because of the High School's transformation into the Junior High, we still managed to produce a pictorial and written expression of the 1977-78 school year here at the now extinct AURORA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. It's been fun! 160 9
