Arsenic and Old Lace The Senior Class out did itself this year by choosing a difficult broadway play, Arsenic and Old Lace” and producing it in fine style. Thp critics said it couldn’t be done, but on opening night the audience sat spellbound. A great job by a talented cast. Mr. Kinnett has the cure as Patti gets a pre-show headache. Tom's eyes bulge as Joanne and Patti put the squeeze on him. Take my hand, I'm a stranger in paradise. Jill speaks softly and carries a big stick. What's this I hear about Woman's lib?? Of all the languages in the World, English is the most confusing. For that reason, we are offered four years of it in high school, but we must confess that there is still much to learn. Therefore we must continue studying the language, in order to use it to its fullest. English Let's go on with the show. 34 Just kidding, Mr. Kinnett. Come on, let us all put a smile on our face. Mathematics From simple arithmetic to complex factoring, From plain geometry to trigonometry, We work hard to achieve great knowledge, though Many of us cannot find the value of it. Gary, that's no way to make a peace sign; better take lessons from Doug. Youcansee astudent can get wrapped up in his geometry. Social Studies I believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect Union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies. - The American Creed To Kathy, and others, courage is being able to give a Civics report. Who cares how a bill becomes a law? I wonder who won this current events game between the Civics class and the U. S. History class? 36 Don't turn your heads; I have something important to say. 37 The class watches the teacher; Kevin watches the camera. Science In biology we learned about animal and plant life. Physical science taught us the aspects of Earth's existance. Chemistry showed us the chemical side of things, And physics pointed out the relationship between science and mathematics. Three little pigs Bob Evans didn't get. That hydra looks like a bow, says Dean. Harry that is. Physics has been taking great strives forward. Now it's only Wake up, Kenny. The bell is about to ring, fifty years behind the comic books. 38 Science is organized knowledge. I wish I was organized. Physical science, the light at the end of a tunnel. Just a jigger of gin and Chemistry will never be the same. VOC. Agriculture Daniel Webster - When tillage begins, other arts follow. The farmers therefore are the founders of human civilization. 39 ALTO CLARINETS S. House K. Houze P. Howard T. Turner D. Huffman BASS CLARINETS B. Kinnett L Johnson L Nieman M. Lewis J. Reese T. Spanish Not Guiding Light, but LaVida No Es Sueno. Spanish is a very popular language in Mexico and in the Americas, not to mention Spain itself. The language first came to America with Columbus in 1492 and remains a part of our heritage. Many Spanish words have even been adopted into the English language. Therefore it seems very logical to study and learn the language. Cumpleanos Feliz, Senorita Draut. Deck the halls with hot tamales, sings the Spanish class. 42 A party ends with empty cups and a bunch of crumbs. Navidad, Christmas that is, will soon be here. French Until very recently every educated man had two languages, his own and French. Such affection for France and the French language can be seen in the fact that even countries at war with France loved France. One admires them for their wines, cheeses, fruits, and vegetables. Moreover, French food is rated on top everywhere. Therefore, what would be more natural than to learn and study to speak French. French is more than fries and kisses, it's toast too. 43 Vocational School A typical day begins with the journey to A. H. S., an hour bus ride for some. Another 45 minute bus ride face vocational students before they begin their two hour classes. Versailles Vocational School offers many courses - auto body repair, auto mechanics, the building trades, data processing, electronics, food service, graphic arts, welding, machine shop, and power mechanics (diesel) among others. After two hours in class, relieved by a 15 minute break, students have time for a quick snack, prepared by food service pupils, before the bus ride back to A.H.S. Vocational students attend activity period and two afternoon classes, before the journey home to await a new day. It takes more than a few loose connections to stop Carl and Joe. Mona Kinzer plays the computer game with a well-stacked deck. An electronic disembowment occupies Todd, Joe and Victor. Chief cook and bottlewasher, Bill Gabbard, fills a cup the hard way. Welding is a very hot class at vocational school. Sani Melson puts his T. V. set on a 1000 calorie a day diode. Karen shows the guys that some women still prefer the kitchen. Ground control to Major Ross. Roger and out. Making a record cover takes plenty of care and concen- Art, like drinking, consists of drawing the line somewhere, tration, as Jerry is discovering. It is through Art, and through Art only, that we can realize our perfection; through Art and Art only that we can shield ourselves from the sordid perils of actual existence. -WILDE Barbara's masterpiece seems to be coming out fine. Hey you guys Cay says, took at the Birdie. 46 Typing Boy this just isn't my type. Hey Mr. Race, how in the heck do I get my fingers out of this? Typing is a course that can benefit many. It can help prepare secretaries, help in writing a term paper, and so forth. 47 Coffee break. Where's my Wrigley's spearmint? While fingers fly Kevin shuffles papers. Home Economics Even with Woman’s lib and the ratification of the 27th Amendment in progress, Home Economics continues as usual. Girls learn to cook, sew, and keep house. Even the guys are taking it. Debbie, my finger is stuck! !! That sure tastes good. What is it? 48 Making sandwiches is fun. Just look at Rita. The aroma is stunning. A future surgeon at work? Look at him scrub up. Rita, you had better pay attention. Your future husband may not fancy doing the cooking, let alone the housework. 49 Physical Education The only exercise some people get is jumping at conclusions, running down their friends, sidestepping responsibility, and pushing their luck. -GLASOW Sometimes we're so eager to play, we don't even Sandy kicks high, karate style, change clothes. Physical Education skills make intramurals tick. Likely prospects for next year's chorus line? SO Industrial Arts Is nothing sacred? Woman's lib invades the shop. Industrial arts can be very important for a guy, or even a girl. Who knows when a person will need to repair or make something. Furthermore, a person may learn enough to make a career of it. Therefore to save time and money, or to make money, take industrial arts Time and figuring helps prevent errors. The tongue biting stage comes just before the hair pulling. 51 PEOPLE ”1 do my thing and you do your thing. I am not in this world to live up to your expectations And you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you And I am I And if by chance we find each other It’s beautiful. -Frederick S. Peris Class of 1973 Pres. Dan Gleason; V. Pres. Mark Schmelt7cr; See. Denise P ropes; Treas. Roxanne Withered; Not pictured Rend a Horen. Only lour short years ago we were freshmen, just beginning our high school careers. One hundred fifty-five strong, we became a ixirt of the school, attending classes in lioth the Jr. High anti High School, and suffering the hardships of walking from building to building to building . Neither rain, nor snow, nor heat of day could keep us from our appointee! rounds. Anti soon—we were Sophomores. At last we had a voice in student government, electing Debbie Grieve, Renda Horen, and Rantly Turner to the Student Council, anil Class Officers Dan DeCamp, Barbara Anken-bauer, Margie Robinson, and Roxanne Withered. Of the events that occurred during our Sophomore year, probably the most outstanding was the elimination of die school's tlrcss code. The Fall of 1971 brought footliall games, band practices, anil die start of our |unior year. We were quite busy raising money witli bake sales, concessions, anil our unforgettable ten-mile walk in order to create what has lieen said to lie the most beautiful prom in A.H.S. history -- Over The Rainbow , under the leadership of Prom Chairman, |onna Busse. Our Student Council Representatives during our |unior year were Dan Gleason, Dan De-Camp, Lee Williams, and Roger Spencer. Our Class Officers were Dave Stoops, Mark Schmeltzer, Debbie Meyers, and Connie Elliott. — And now at last, we are Seniors. Led by Class Officers Dan Gleason, Mark Schmeltzer, Roxanne Withered, Denise Prop-cs, and Renda Horen; and Student Council members Ken Ray, Damon Canfield, Debbie Greive, Jonna Busse, and Amy Neff, we have been described as one of the most hardworking and unified classes in school. Among die highlights of our Senior year were 1950's Day , The Aurora Eight , anil our Class play, Arsenic and Old Lace . Now, realizing that our high school days are numbered, all the old nostalgic memories flood over us. We have come a long way since that first day in September of 1969 when we entered A.H.S. -- anil we've come the whole way together. 54 ROBERT ABBOTT SIVS 3,4 DEBORAH S. This year's team started slow but showed much improvement toward the end, led by a late blooming Kenny Ray and a regenerated Ed James. Though the wins were few this year, there is more to basketball than winning. This year's Red Devils stressed other qualities - especially building character. Ray stings the net for two more against the Shiners. James is set to rebound, if Schmeltzer misses the mark. 8, 9, 10 . . . you're out! 98 ______________________ t Ray lays one up and almost gets laid out. Turner prepares to bounce, while James hangs on. 100 101 Baseball Coach Slayback fielded one of the strongest baseball teams in Aurora history. The team hit . 320 as a unit led by Ed James .416, Dave Coggeshall .413, BUI Miller .339, Bill Meyer . 324, Mark Schmeltzer . 323, and Dennis Mix . 322. The pitching was equally strong with James, Mix, and Doug Conrad sharing the pitching duties. Despite the disappointing Sectional loss to Lawrenceburg 3-0, this year's team was one with which we can look back at with pride. All-Conference: Schmeltzer, Coggeshall, Stoops, James, and MUler. While the catcher Stoops, Davey swings. The question is - Was it a hit or a miss? 102 Not a Miller high light - being thrown out at first base. 103 When Coggeshall's flipper flips, runners shake. H. S. team over the last five years. Members work hard, under Mr. Longcamp’s leadership to hit the greens and find the hole. Though recurring rains and soggy fairways limited practice time, the A. H.S. golf team once again made a good showing. 106 Could these be duffers? Maybe this is the ball? Joe Scudder - a heavenly swinger. Sometimes even a putter loses it s head on the green. 107 Cross Country Suffering, sweat, endurance, guts, blisters, thirst, pain . . . words synonomous with the most grueling of all sports - cross country. But all the negative words are forgotten when the 2 1 2 mile grind is finished, when the race is done, the course conquered. One word replaces them all - that word -satisfaction. We'U wipe them out says Longcamp as Bill Courter handles a more ticklelish situation. 108 Over the hill and through the woods, tra la la . . . The charge of the lightly clad brigade. 4 Cross Country Team - L. to R. L. Schuler, J. Meyer, T. Cornett, T. Cheek, B. Hizer, B. Courter, D. Livingston, D. Stoops When it itches, we scratch. Mike Molen knows that a well-reared young man knows when to pat a cheek and when not to. Track Track is a lonely sport. While other sports are team efforts, track requires the individual to stand alone. The sprinter, the longdistance runner, the jumper, the shot putter all must reach within themselves for that something extra which separates the winner from the loser. Track is a lonely sport, but when excellence prevails it is also the most satisfying. Don Livingston, I presume ! How much further could a broad jumper jump, if a broad jumper could jump broads. Martin soars high to make nervous ’’wrecks of the opposition. J 110 Tum’er around Rose and heave. What goes up, must come down - even Stanley. Sometimes the Fuzz do finish first, sometimes not. Ill It’s Academic The only team that sits on the bench and plays. C. Menne, D. Martin, G. Frable, not pictured is alternate G. Walston, who was standing in reserve. 112 Brian uncoils and the iron ball flies. No one can kick about this display of spirit. Spirit The Devil team - focal point of sectional spirit. Libs” on Fitness fun could very well be the motton of the Girls' Athletic Association, Merrill's Marauders blend hard work with fun and games to attain the final goal - a healthy body. Bods blossom with the help of G.A.A. favorites - track, basketball, and volleyball. With the growth of the girls' sport scene participants are beginning to outnumber spectators. This year one G.A.A. 'er Kathy Withered, long jumped her way into the state track finals. Just as women in general have been liberated, so to, the girls are gaining. The bench is important but it gets hard after awhile. Janet Neff goes high as Ruth Spencer awaits the rebound. Band is a fun place to be if you can play do-re-mi. Obviously the members of the band have mastered this and much more and look at all the fun they had ! As a marching band they performed at the Farmer's Fair, at the Pumpkin Show, at Aurora Football games during halftime, and at the first and only Calvacade of Bands at Lawrenceburg, during which they marched along deserted streets. Secondly, they entered the Band Contest as a first division band. And the band, of course, also serves as a class for super salesmen. They pounded the sidewalks and sold more than $4,000 worth of magazines, had two bake sales and a raffle, and had a Career Day at Frisch's. The band is a great organization for those that like to march in the footsteps of The Music Man. Smiling faces make a great marching band. Jolly ain't so jolly cause her squad ain't straight. FHA Often unnoticed, Future Home-makers of America work together bringing warmth and happiness to others. Though recognition is slight, the rewards are many -the laughter of Muscatatuck children during fun and games; the heartrending farewells of senior citizens after cookies and tea; the trusting friendliness of the special education classes; the joy that serving others can bring. Did you ever hear of a gingerbread float? Debbie riggs up a lunch. Having won the Sweepstakes in the Farmer's Fair parade-for three straight years, this year the Club retired the trophy. Not only did the club donate its services to the Senior Class for the plays, it also found time to construct a display case for a local rest home. These boys deserve much credit. Industrial Club wielding Neanderthals escort the prize winner on its triumphant journey. 124 The I. A. Club spread itself thin to complete the float. Arts Club 125 The Sweepstakes winner, for the third time, retired the trophy. Sunshine Service is the key word of the Sunshine Society, one of the most active groups at A.H.S, Funds that are raised by such projects as holly sales, are put to good use - from a large donation to Riley Hospital to baskets for the needy and Christmas toys. Sunshine also cooperates with other community groups in fund raising drives. The Ideal Lady Tea, the Sunshine highlight of the year, is a time of revelation and celebration. The girls of Sunshine radiate warmth and happiness wherever they go. The Sunshine march was a fair treat. Debbie makes a wise remark. 126 Charla, why are you lighting my nose, I don't even smoke! Are you sure Batwoman started like tnis? 127 Student Council Three Student Council meetings .... the rest of them looked like this, looked like this......................... Student Council members: President Ken Ray, Vice-President Damon Canfield, Sec. Debbie Grieve (Seaver), Amy Neff, Jonna Busse, Kris Houze, Sandy Tandy, John Ryle, Dan Vorbroker, Kim Trog, Doug Trester, Nita Neary Office Pages With only seven pages, you get a very short story. Office pages LEFT TO RIGHT: Debbie Allen, Mary Meier, Jean Sharp, Doug Conrad, Charla Lambert, Barb Anken-bauer. FRONT: Steve Tufts. 128 Pep Club And the winner of this year's bubble gum blowing contest is Damon Canfield. Decorating, Crying, Bake Sale-ing, Screaming, License plate selling, and cheering, our Pep Club worked its way to the Sectional. For the first time in several years, enthusiasm reigned high in the boy's pep block. This was surely one of the most spirited Pep Clubs in A.H.S. History. Everyone backs Charla in decorating the hall. Quick, Connie, give me the tape. The wall is falling down! Look sharp Jean, could Charlotte be asking Peggy for a Kent? All eyes follow the action, but Terri's miss mia iNear (1) y falls as Kathy the mark. waves to the crowd. 129 To Be Contrary to popular belief, Esse is not a vehicle for frustrated porno authors, even though one issue had to be brought back. Esse members constantly burn the midnight oil putting out the magazine. Those who disparage Esse and who make queries as to whether it exists should try to accomplish an equivalent deed with only six people. In the face of an almost totally apathetic student body and faculty, Esse refused to lower its high standards and continued to require the reader to actively participate if he wished to appreciate Esse rather than spoon feed him. Press time crften presses the staff for time. K. Smith, B. Canfield, D. Allen, M. Lewis, T. Fehling, P. Smith, R. Frable, C. Lewis, D. Cook, Not pictured G. Frable, who took the picture. Marilyn is always in the works. Much material must be screened for good stories. Rachael proves that the hand is quicker than the eye. 130 A Club Pam finds out what girls have been missing in A-Club, NOTHING. Athletes get together to talk over old times, games, and battles. Everyone pays close attention to Heim. Art Club Not only Picasso had alot of fun with the money he made selling his artwork, the Aurora Art Club cashed in on their masterpieces, too. (They didn't end up having the kind of fun Picasso did though, but this is digression.) By selling Christmas cards and Bumper stickers, posters, and badges for the Sectional, they grossed enough money for a fun field trip to the Dayton Art Institute where they were grossed out. In the midst of our hope — there is some uncertainty, In the midst of our past achievements — there is the challenge of the future. In the midst of our laughter — there are some tears. We watch as our youthful enthusiasm slips farther into the past Or Does It? The four years here have been but transient moments within our lives. We are merely moving into another phase of our existence. This is not the end nor the beginning of the end but rather the end of the beginning.” 167 As each year passes, nothing is changed. The sun still shines, it still rains and it still snows. Grass and leaves are still green. Earth is still brown, Flowers still are colorful and sweet smelling and yet, each year is different — leaving different memories behind that make each year unique — never to be changed again Doors that we used to open, now only close behind us And we go out out into a world where we find that many doors are locked but they can be opened if we open them — Together 7 :f '-; - ■m .J-'KI 'vfF .ZMvV- A . - .-I—.
