Challenge of Change The only thing permanent is change. Everything changes. Everyone changes. Nature...weather...seasons...styles...knowledge... ideas...morals...towns...nations...people. Change is all around us. It touches every aspect of every life. To survive and progress we must continually meet its challenge-the challenge of change. A new wing will ease the transformation of AHS into a junior high. The changing scene will mean destruction of Northside (the original high school). 2 3 Patriotism...love of country...challenges by changing ideas. Growing bodies require food to meet challenges of daily living. Sometimes the changing world is not challenging enough. Scholars meet the challenges of television competition. 4 Sometimes teachers meet challenges above and beyond the call of duty. Many face the challenge of outside responsibility. Testing and counseling ready us for the outside world. Some challenges are urgent...some can Home Ec. department prepares for various changes, be met in a leisurely manner. ACTIVITIES Festive Fair Finale Farmer’s Fair brought many different attractions to Aurora. Students released from school at noon on the Thursday of the fair, congregated in town to get their first sampling of the fair. That evening Aurora High School's own Eddie Edwards won the title of Sesqui-Centennial Fair King. The Pet Parade was enjoyed by a large crowd Friday afternoon. Friday evening stage entertainment was provided by the M ilan High School Band. Playing “Baubles, Bangles, and Beads” from Kismet, the high stepping A.H.S. band led the fair parade through the streets of Aurora. After the full day at the fair, crowds were entertained with a concert by the high school band. After the streets were cleaned of the debris of three fair days only memories of hog calling, cotton candy eating, parading, and game playing remained. Randy Lothridge stops the parade as he evaluates the photographer behind him. Terry Klueber explains his hat by saying, “When my hair gets wet, it gets curly.” Mickey Busse and Becky Weaver sing about milking cows and raising sheep. To Sesqui Celebration Farmer’s Fair King, Ed Edwards escorts Aurora’s queen candidate, Linda Houze. This piquant epitome of AHS pulchritude bumps off a balloon. “This isn’t fair. I feel like I’m still in school! 9 Youth Day The team of Wingate and Kern head for the lead as Janey Molen loses her wheels. Part of the Sesqui-Centennial festivities were devoted specifically to the younger citizens of Aurora. A committee of high school students planned various games and races for Youth Day which all students of Aurora schools were invited to attend. Those who attended the Youth Day celebrations in the Aurora City Park took part in a car rodeo, balloon throwing, three-legged racing, and watermelon eating contests. The rope finally broke due to weighty matters on the girls’ end. 10 Barb Schaich drives home her point in the car rodeo. Homecoming Homecoming royalty 1 to r: C. Montgomery, freshman; C. The 1970 junior class Prom began April 24 with introductions of the couples which continued until the George Kasper Orchestra began to play. Co-chairman of the Prom, Nancy Belew and Susan Dewers, carried out the theme of “Age of Aquarius” with a fountain that consisted of a water bearer emptying a pitcher into a silver pool. The walls were decorated with zodiac signs and star covered streamers hung from the ceiling. Everyone enjoyed the music which ranged from “Aquarius Let the Sun Shine In” to polkas to the bunny hop. Following the crowning of John Thatcher and Ruby Cheek as this year’s Prom royalty, couples boarded buses and proceeded to the Cincinnati Western Bowl for the Post Prom. After dancing, bowling, and shooting pool, the couples were served a buffet and then returned to Aurora. u The Seniors show how to make the best of a long evening. Dave Withered and Mickey Busse pass in review on their way to the coronation. Aquarius Reigns “You and your white sox, now everyone is looking- at us. As you can see the hands off policy is strictly observed. Is That All There Is? Ruby Cheek and John Thatcher appear to be working up a monumental thirst as they eye the royal crown. The witching hour found us boarding yellow coaches for the trip to the land of strikes, spares, and eight balls. 16 Royalty Fair candidate Linda Houze. The football team and their Head Coach, Harley Heim, weathered a tough season in 1969 and finished the campaign with a 3-5 and 1 mark despite injuries to key players. Terry Klueber and Mark Dobson suffered leg injuries which severely cut down on Aurora’s offense prowess. Nonetheless, the Red and White expressed tremendous determination throughout the year. Three of the Devil losses, and the one tie, were decided by a couple of breaks which didn’t fall our way. With better luck we might have had an impressive 7-2 season. Such was not to be the case; however, the team and its coaches added plenty of color and skill to the ’69 football program. Devil spirit dropped considerably in the final two Devil outings following the heartbreaking 8-0 loss to Lawrenceburg; however, the underclassmen were given a chance to play and gain valuable experience. Thus, the Aurora football squad worked through a rebuilding season in hopes of making the Devils a big winner in the future. Kneeling: Managers - Dave Farrell, Tom Lorton. The 1970 Aurora Basketball team finished the season with 9-11 despite illness and injuries to key players and the absence of two 1969 starters. It was a rough job for Coach Slayback to mold a contender out of the Red and White when at times he practiced with as few as seven men. However, the Aurora boss met the task and utilized all available material to make the Devils a serious threat in the Lawrenceburg Sectional. Jerry Miller and Steve Spencer proved to be Slayback’s most consistent players by adding scoring and rebounding strength, while Ken Henry contributed all around stability. Jerry Doenges overcame mononucleosis and turned in a strong performance in the second half of the campaign, and enjoyed two brilliant sectional games. Bill McKee and Terry Klueber filled in to balance Aurora’s attack. Aurora lost to Lawrenceburg in the Tourney’s championship bout, yet tasted satisfaction by literally overpowering the Swiss Pacers in the Saturday afternoon game. 54 Coach Bill Slayback: twisted tie and crumpled towel his trademarks; basketball his business. For juniors hoping to attend college, there were numerous qualifying tests. Other juniors took aptitude tests or planned to attend vocational school. The juniors’ major contributions were the selection of a Prom theme and the efforts to make the Prom a memorable one. The “Age of Aquarius” remains a lasting memory of junior efforts. Sue Lyons shows Joyce Lockwood how a well run concessions booth should operate. Upon their entrance to the senior high school, they were bombarded with pleas to join Choir, Pep Club, FHA, FF A, GAA, Industrial Arts Club, and Hi-Y. By electing class officers and student council representatives, the sophomores gained a voice in school matters for the first time. Two sophomore girls were elected attendants to the queens of Homecoming and the Christmas Dance. In a sophomore activity period everyone studies! Well, would be believe some study?? Having classes in both the Jr. High and Sr. High buildings, they had to rush to get to class within the allotted three minutes. They enjoyed the chance to take part in high school functions and activities. They adjusted well to the changing atmosphere this year. Next year’s sophomores will be challenged during their coming year with greater responsibilities than they’ve had before. Neither maxi-coat weather nor broken legs stay the freshmen from their appointed rounds. Freshmen - On the Way Up. 122 Gee, Mr. Ellinghausen, do amoebas have nudist colonies, too?
