THE AURORA BOREALIS 1962 AURORA HIGH SCHOOL AURORA, INDIANA EDITOR - ASSISTANT EDITOR - ADVISOR - Joyce Schuienborg Martha Ritter Phyllis Bower TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 2 Life in School 4 Tutors and the Taught 18 Enjoying our Activities 58 Excitement Through Sports 78 Index 91 Advertisements 95 IT'S ALL YOURS Settled securely in the valley among many vivid green, rolling hills and along the beautiful, winding Ohio lies Aurora. It is not a famous city, for all who pass through do not remember its name. All will recall, though, its lovely views and serene atmosphere. Within this community lies another. It is abounding with spirit, enthusiasm, new challenges, and excitement. The students of Aurora High School are its inhabitants. It is their serious faces that are seen in classes and their piercing screams that break through the roar of a basketball game. They work hard to improve themselves, for they know that they will be the future foundation of their Aurora. LIFE IN SCHOOL EVERY STUDENT HAS A PART IN By 8:25 a.m. all the students and teachers have passed through these doors to the inside of a busy, busy school. That is, all the students and teachers who don’t indulge in an extra five minutes of sleep. Where's Mr. Shelby? Someone is loitering in the hall! Could it by Molly, a well-known figure at A. H. S. ? This lineup is merely a group of girls waiting to talk to the Dean of Girls. Were they tardy for class, or did they skip school the day before? SOME PHASE OF SCHOOL LIFE . We must have been beautiful babies, 'cause There must be an easier way to join G. A. A. look at us now! Would anyone like a drink? A coke that is! How long must I keep my hands in this goop?” We literally ate up the entertainment. We're enjoying ourselves. -9Z1W «i THERE ARE ACTIVITIES FOR At the 1961-1962 installation of the Hi-Y The new Hi-Y officers conducted the officers. Bill Bateman was installed as Pres- initiation service for the new members, idem, Terry Miskell as Vice President, George Fox as Secretary, Jake Porter as Treasurer, and Dave Dougherty as Chaplain. Mr. Gabbard opens the Armistice Day program and introduces the guest speaker, Norman Steele. Each year Mrs. Simpson plans the Christmas program; and, with the help of the Latin II class, keeps the attention of the entire assembly. [ 8 ] THE ENTIRE STUDENT BODY, The F. F. The Pep Band consists of David Hizer on the drums, Dan Landwehr on the baritone, John Ross playing his hot trumpet, David Dougherty blowing the slide trombone, Kenny Nisbet playing the sly sax, and last but not least, Steve Cherry play ing the deep bass while he stamps out the beat. The Pep Band usually plays before and during eac pep session. AND ACTIVITIES TO SATISFY You will see the massive block of band students at every home game. When the stick goes up, up go the horns and out comes a great sound, the Washington and Lee Swing. Here comes Frosty the Snow Man and here comes the Aurora High School Band. [ 10 ] SPECIAL INTERESTS AND TALENTS . Susan Clore, our pretty, poised Farmers Hey! What goes here? Fair Queen candidate. Our peppy, high jumping cheerleaders lead the crowd in chants, yells, and frequent shouts. t 11 1 WORK CAN BE FUN! Only a couple more hours to finish this. We worked into the wee hours. EVERYONE EAGERLY AWAITED OUR PROM The Avalon arrived early on the eve of our enchanted night and rested on the still, shining waters of the scenic Ohio River. Even though it was quiet on board now, within several hours the dance floor would be ringing with a mixture of joyful laughter and melodic music. The top deck, now chilled and deserted, was soon to be spotted with gorgeous gowns and warmed by a silvery moon. A brisk night did not discourage the crowd that gathered to watch the bright eyed couples as they hurried to join their friends in the traditional rainbow march. Each handsome fellow and his fair lady walked hand in hand under the decorated arch and were introduced to the admiring public who enjoyed seeing every frilly frock and crisp white dinner jacket. [ 13 ] WE DANCED ALL NIGHT The girls held on to their escorts as they descended down the runway. Spike heels clicked and the gowns rustled in the breeze. Dancing was the favorite pastime of everyone; you were alone on the floor with your partner but surrounded by others. Everyone had a wonderful time. If you weren’t dancing, you watched the others, caught up on the latest news, made a trip to the coke counter, or enjoyed a quiet chat on the moon deck. THEN CROWNED OUR ROYAL COUPLE Midnight ended the reign of last year's king and queen. John Reid and Charlene Lock-wood. and marked the beginning of a new reign for our royal couple, John Ullrich and Pat Jackson. Our smiling king. John Ullrich, and queen, Pat Jackson, were welcomed with applause, cheers, and flashing bulbs as they walked to their throne in a happy daze. N AND HONORED OUR ROYAL COURT v Bill Bateman, Susan Clore, Carolyn Davis, Gary Watts, Gary Beer, Cheryl Lockwood, Mike Smith, and Gayle Middleton made up the entire royal court. Aloha. We sent greetings to our royal court along with flowers and gifts that they will treasure the rest of their lives. ALOHA The night cruise was over and the boat docked on the shore letting its passengers off to enjoy more festivities. dancing, and later on a movie through which most viewers would sleep. An array of fragile orchids and golden shells covered with pearls decorated each table. The lighthouse sent a beckoning stream of light across the blue rippling waves. Our royal couple stood on the bridge and gazed into the babbling waters of the brook wondering what other excitement their treasured reign would hold. Unbelievably large white clam shells and orchids scattered under palm trees, turned the gym into a picturesque Hawaiian scene. TUTORS AND THE TAUGHT IN MEMORY OF MR. KRUSE Lester Kruse, Aurora's journalism teacher for twelve years, took an active interest in our students and our school. Mr. Kruse and his students have been a familiar part of Aurora High. Under his direction, the students produced excellent annuals and Hi Lites. At the prom and other social events, it was not unusual to see Mr. Kruse and his wife enjoying an evening with our students. Good tone quality is one of the most important factors for a top notch band. Mr. Platt spends many hours teaching the band the perfection of shading. [ 26 ] THROUGH TRAINING AND PRACTICE Busy, Busy—The hands of the 1962 journalism class were continually busy writing, revising, reading, sorting, taking pictures, and a million and one things as they strived to edit the A. Hi Lite and the A. H. S. annual on time. Mr. Bates, Beginning typing and bookkeeping teacher, has found time to travel through Europe, Canada, and the United States. Miss Bower, in her second year at Aurora, added journalism to her typing and shorthand classes. Our typing classes are taught by Miss Bower and Mr. Bates. Juniors and Seniors increase their typing skill with practice every day. GAYLE BATES A. B., Earlham M. S., Indiana University PHYLLIS BOWER B. [ 31 ] THESE ARE THE PROPS Mrs. Smith, our Dean of Girls, prepares to fill out an absence blank. Among her other duties are attending to problems that arise among the girls and seeing to the smooth running of the school. Superintendent Pitts attends to the business of running the public schools of Aurora. Students of A.H.S. see him frequently as he peeks into classrooms to keep up on what is going on. Among the duties of running an efficient high school is to notify the school of all events, situations, and happenings. Here Principal Eugene Gabbard informs the school of the day's activities. BEHIND THE SCENES The basketball game is over, the halls are now deserted--that is deserted except for the mess and our faithful janitor, Irv Fillenworth. Arch Jackson, assistant janitor, is aware of the small, mysterious looking doors which appear periodically along the walls. Could they be secret tunnels or-------broom closets?
