X' A5 , ,S fee. .. 5 I O A . .,,1.:..-.yt Q aa. Lai.. We are Seniors at Aurora High School. That, in itself, yields a promise of boundless activities and decisions. Our days are filled with the furor of new classes, vigorous rivalry in sports, and an awareness of a new co-operation between teacher and student. Already we begin to think with nostalgia about daily occurrences. Who among us will ever forget the clank of locker doors, the canteen dances, sizzling pizzas, and a swelling of pride when our band swings into our school song? Because we want to hold each memory near to us, we have kept our DEVIL'S DIARY. Thumbing through its pages we, in the years to come, will recall the memories of our 1960 school year at A.H.S. 2 I 1 s 2 V J X I 4 . l3l X X K J EN ,REAL G . Ed Stratman, Linda York, and Mrs. Smith listen to classic records Your interpretationof Macbeth may not be correct Ed, but its original, laughs Mrs. Smith. Listening to the works of Poe, Shakespeare, and Frost was one of the projects of this year's senior English class. Compositions, impromptu speeches, and word usage were stressed in preparing academically minded students for college. Helpful corrections offered by the entire class have annihilated our ain't's, dangling participles, and ' split .lnfinitives not only in class but in everyday conversation. l4l S 1 I E 3 if fs 3 Q 'Q ter sf yi as 1: ' :rim , ,,,,. , , :fl ., Q, 4 A 3, 1, yi, . Combining the rich and colorful Latin American culture with the study of grammer, Mrs. Mary Simpson made her classes of Spanish en- joyable to all. Room ll soon became the most decorated room in school as Spanish flags and pictures of daring matadors were used to depict the south-of-the-border atmosphere. Entering this room, one also entered the world of the Spaniard. The days of the week, the months of the year, numbers, everyday conversations--all were in Spanish. Mrs. Simpson obtained Spanish pen pals for us in order that we might exercise our knowledge of the romantic and beautiful language. Records in Spanish were purchased to increase our powers of comprehen sion. As we traveled along El Camino Real, we learned the language and customs of our neighbors and were able to understand their way of life. This understanding is a necessity in the shrinking world of to- day. ,..----,.... ..-1 W QUDLED AND D 1 of ,, , . ,., r f, .,, ,W ty L 7 f if ,'. s t ,Klan-f as A -ww - x f m' 4 11 My Bob Sterling, Ed Stratman, Nancy Conaway, and instructor, Miss Whelan put the finishing touches on their class mural. Projects was the key word for this year's art class. With the aid of Miss Whelan, the class began their year with posters for our Farmer's Fair. For the Christmas season the Santa Claus Castle on Main Street was their con- tribution to our community. The junior and senior boys usually had the responsibili- ty of assembling the scenery for the senior class play and then of taking it down for another year. The football bleach ers required a fresh coat of paint once a year. The lndus- trlal Arts Department was called upon to do the job with efficiency. With full steam ahead government became a part of our lives. Taught by Mr. A1 Porter, our classes contained vital activities which will be a part of our lives as citizens. Speakers from different vocational fields, class discussions, films, tax reports--these kept us busy. From a trip to a city council meeting, we obtained a concept of local govern- ment in action. Students enjoyed receiving brochures from various countries and, as a result, maintained a foreigh in- formation file. All this will enable us to be better citizens and future voters. After being interviewed by Master of Ceremonies, Jim Harrison, gay and enchanted couples boarded the Chaperon to begin a long remembered evening. One of the few remaining show boats, the Chaperon provided hours of dancing to the hot beat of a combo, the thrill of watching the paddle churn the dark velvet of the river, or strolling the top deck under a blanket of stars. Returning to shore, the couples went to the gymnasium for more dancing, a banquet, and most important - the crowning of our King and Queen. Entertainment was provided by, Bob Braun, Cincinnati television personality. The Palace Theater offered a musical comedy for the tired but happy students. At last, the mystical eyening ended, but the memories linger on. X xx 1 J OUR ROYIU. iP1iE aw.,-3 7 . . iq l K yx is is , WA' is 4 . F .fbi L -11 The climax of OUR PROM was the crowning of Queen Carolyn Kremer and King Larry Rumsey. Attended by Bob Sterling, Linda York, Eldon Ridener, Judy Adams, Pam Porter, Vic Steele, Loraine Shuter, and Frank Linkmeyer, they ruled royally. With the beginning strains of music, our King and Qieen, accompanied by their attendants, led off the next dance--an end of a perfect reigning. ,Arima A, WW, Y YW- , 1 l 1 H out KING AND uuttN ' 1 ie ,:, +T- ii' X2 , ff' er- 0 -,., , 'L L 'L Q ' ff :A 1 V - - ,.. Ln the wee hour of 8:30, gentleman Larry watches as Carolyn, unassisted, removes her own coat. It's study, study, study as they prepare for semester exams. Sweets for the sweetest, Larry de- clares as our royal couple visit the candy machine. After school we follow Carolyn to Beyer's Pharmacy where she's the girl completely surrounded by her work. Larry remains at school for basketball practice. That's Coach Harold Hickman giving Larry a few pointers on the game. WI H A BEl-YTH-MM'-cj iw-an H1 r.. Cf if, in 234 The Music Department of A .1-l.S. has its place in our DEVIL'S DIARY because of the importance it plays in our school functions. Composed of 80 members and under the direction of Mr. William Platt, our band is active in assembly programs, parades, sporting events, concerts, and numerous community affairs. Working as a unit, band members reap enjoyment as well as satisfaction from their work. Experiences such as contest trips will continue to bring to mind humorous but nostalgic memories such as the many times our trombonist Dave forgot to board the bus and was stranded. With pride we introduce to you the school within a school our Music Department. Band Officers: Bob Meyer, President, Linda York, Vice- President, Ann Baker, Secretaryg Carroll Houserneyer, Treasurer. H UUWWW It is with great pride and appreciation that we, the students of A.l-l.S., look toward Our Faculty V and record their names in our DEVIL'S DIARY. Few schools have the close co-operation shared by the ' student body and faculty of A.H.S. This co- operation has come about with the realization of the importance of the individual. We were taught p V and counseled with the concept that we were young men and women with individual likes, dislikes, 7 problems, and capabilities. The student, in turn, recognized the individuality of the faculty mem- bers. We seniors are now aware that if the future brings success, the majority of our indebtedness must go to the faculty of A.H.S.
