Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1959 volume:

We don't deny it; ours is a small town. In the eyes of a stranger it rarely catches more than a cursory glance. But if he were interested and would take a closer look, he would find a warmth and friendliness seldom known to one who lives in a larger city. He would see with appreciation the beautiful Ohio winding along the splendrous Indiana hills. He would find our ideas noteworthy and our ambitions astounding, our industry interesting, and our reminiscences irresistible. In short, he would find that seldom thing, a city built on the hearts of the people. Yes, ours is a small town, but then, we like it that way. Because we are proud of our town, we, the Class of 1959, dedicate this annual to Our Town, Aurora, Indiana. [ 1 We are the sentors of Aurora High School, year 1959. This in itself is all we need of distinction, but as Seniors we realize that with only this ovation we may soon pass into tlie nullity of time. Remember us.. .for we, as we fare forth to slay our dragons and carve our niche in the world, never realize as keenly as we do at this time that this is the end of one pan of our life in our town. Even as we pass gladly into the time-tempered stages of maturity, we will remember with mixed feeling our days as Seniors-year 1959-at A. H. S. CLASS HISTORY It has been said. . .there is nothing like your high school years. . .and there are 89 of us willing to agree. It seems like only yesterday, when as 121 unsuspecting green Freshmen, we took our first teps through the now familiar halls of A.H.S. We were the first class to spend all four of our years in the new addition. The following September, 115 of us returned to assume our work as Sophomores, somewhat relieved as we were no longer green freshies . We followed our basketball team to the Regional that year. As Juniors, our responsibilities rose with the selecting of our class rings and the planning of our Prom, Moonlight and Roses . To guide us through this important year, we chose: Bill Rahe, President; Sally Unger, Vice-President; Pat Karsteter, Secretary; and Lanny Lee. Treasurer. Our new classmates became old, and we now had an even 100 in our class. Aurora was selected as a member of the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges, thus raising the staudards of A. H. S. The last chapter of these wonderful years began in September of 1958, as we, the best class ever , returned to complete our high school course. To guide us through our last year, we selected; Bill Rahe, President; Lanny Lee, Vice-President; Nancy Powell, Secretary; and John Linkmeyer, Treasurer. Our Hi Lite and Annual were the greatest, our football team had the best record in the school’s history, and our basketball team was great! This year found us preparing for our class play, selecting our class motto, KNOWLEDGE COMES, BUT WISDOM LINGERS , colors, RED AND WHITE, and flower, ROSE. When we assemble for the last time as a class, dressed in our caps and gowns, to receive our diplomas, we will complete our book of memories. . .to be opened again and again. [ 19 ] SENIOR Norma Woodward Steve Callis Linda Peterson Herb Brinkman MOST MUSICAL MOST ATHLETIC Rosemary Taylor Deraid Ellinghausen MOST ARTISTIC Annis Burlage Scott Ridener SENIOR CORDS This group of Seniors let their imaginations run wild in making and designing their Senior Cords. Yellow corduroy-was chosen as the basic material for the skirts. The figures painted on the cords represent almost anything from the class insignia and Red Devil booster slogans to mortar boards in anticipation of graduation. On the backs of their cords, they painted cartoon characters such as. Little Abner, B.C., Woody Woodpecker, and Snuffy Smith. This group consists of: Rosemary Taylor, Melinda Walker, Norma Woodward, June Dowers, Tish Trester, Barbara Swango, Ann Lange, Vonnie Alfred, Pat Patton, Margaret Elbrecht, Joan Von Luhrte, Barbara Irons, Judy Cutter, Janet Hizer, Martha Jackson, Pat Karsteter, Nancy Powell, Linda Peterson, Bonnie Fox, Phee Petscher, Joan Lyons, Judy Schumacher, Carol Diefenbach, Carolyn Morling, Jerry Schmidt, and Frank McMullen. [ 25 ] UNDERCLASSMEN Classes, in your eyes the underclassman of Aurora seem so many faces in rows, but to us, each is worthy of note in his own right. Here, from these unexperienced minds, will come the future citizens of the World. True, they may never become famous, but in their way as good citizens each will make his country and community a better place in which to live.
