AURORA HIGH SCHOOL Aurora, Indiana RUSHWORTH Editor-in-Chief ROGER RULLMAN Business Manager MARILYN WATTS Assistant Editor DEDICATION We, the class of 1954, dedicate this annual to HARRY RITTER, who, by his efforts, has raised the prestige of our school and of our class. HARWELL This is the annual which we, the class of 1954, have published so that we will not only be remembered, but so that in later years we will also be able to thumb through and remember the year we reigned as seniors. We hope that this annual which we have attempted to fill with gay pages, serious pages, entertaining pages, and maybe even some corny pages, reflects the moods of our class and of the school, for that has been our aim. Let me help you picture it in your mind. A broad walk leads up to the main entrance of an impressive building which has a small plaque (6’ by 6’) at one side of the door reading-“This building designed and engineered by MARILYN WATTS, Architectural Engineer.” After everyone stops to read this, the door opens and we are at last in the AURORA HALL OF FAME. The main hall would contain the cream of Aurora’s crop. Perhaps on the left, Elmer Davis-renowned lecturer; on the right, Nickademis-the original brown-noser; and of course above, the plaque reading “Engineer, Lawyer, Senator, President, Ambassador, President of the UN, and Custodian of the Aurora Hall of Fame” could be a bust of any one of us It’s a pretty sure bet that many of us will fit into at least one of these, but just for fun, let’s look at what my twisted little mind thinks of my classmates. Above an impressive entrance would be an inscription reading: “Within this room stand the busts of the graduates of the class of 1954. These are the statues of those who left their mark on the world and of those who, luckily for the world, died before this was accomplished.” With all this information under our belts, we remove our hats and reverently enter the room. The first group of figures are those who have contributed to our life in a political sense. Here are present the faces of such distinguished people as MONA ROSS and BOB REID. Mona was the first woman to run for President on the Prohibition ticket and actually was elected. However, when Senator BOB MARTIN (Democratic crackpot and originator of Martinism) dug up pictures of her at a wild office party, she resigned quietly and her veep, BOB RIED, was installed in the office. Things didn’t work out too well for Bob though; someone began investigating who had been spiking the White House tea, so President Reid quit and joined the Marines. (He always wanted to be one anyway.) Next in the line of succession was the Right Honorable JAY RUSHWORTH, Ph. D„ GOP, IOU, and PDQ. Before this, Jay had been a career diplomat and had gained fame for turning in the biggest expense account on record. Also included here is JACK HOFMANN, the founder of the Society to Preserve and Protect the Rights of Loafers; he also made a fortune in the black market on unemployment checks We will now leave this happy group and go to the next. Here, standing side by side, are PATTI ZEH and DAN SCHULER. These two, with their great knowledge of the butchering world, bought the Chicago Stock Yards and cornered the weinie market. Over their shoulders we see JIM CHEEK lurking behind a pillar. Jim was temporary head of the F B.I. for 6 days. (He learned the trade at the old Aurora Police Station.) The next group contains the arts and science people Here we find those two red hot mamas-BEV (BAKER) and VONETTA (DEARING) LaRue, who were always blocking up the halls trying to learn that dance step that sky-rocketed them to fame. Here also is PATTI GREATHOUSE, that great dramatic actress who wowed us all in her weekly performance at her Dad’s theater. She was the only actress we ever saw who was so emotional that we got all choked up on our popcorn. Next to Patti lounges DAVE (Loverboy) GRIEVE, a second Rudolph Valentino David was the greatest lover of all time-why, the minute his name appeared on the screen ail the women swooned and had to be carried out. Incidently, he and ROGER RULLMAN, inventor of the assembly line embalming process, formed a partnership and Roge would have one of his deluxe ambulances outside the theater to carry away any of the old girls who could not stand the rise in blood pressure. (That’s why Roger’s bust is laid out here.) Right next to Roger is the Bust of MARY CUTTER. Mary, Miss Universe of 1959, edged Marilyn Monroe out of the movies when she entered the business (We always knew there was something about that girl!) That figure in the cute tiger skin suit is ROSIE SCUDDER. She was Jane, Tarzan’s mate, in the movies until one day she got hold of the wrong vine-it was a 10,000 volt wire. In the science part of this exhibit stands the figure of DAVE HUXSOLL, the ingenious veterinarian who bred the first honest-to-gosh purple cow. CHARLIE WORKMAN bought up all of Dave’s cows and made a fortune making grape ice cream out of the milk he got. Next to these two we find JOHN JACKSON peeking out of his plexi-glass space helmet. John studied aeronautics, astronomy, and astro-physics for years and years before he was offered that chance of a lifetime. He immediately grabbed the job, and was the best Captain Video the Corn Flakes Company ever had. He costarred with Sola, Queen of the Adenoids, (ADRIENNE LAMBERT) until she got carried away one day and shot him with her atom liquidator gun. Here also is JERRY CARTER, the young man who gave his life for science. He slipped and fell while carrying a flask of his powerful explosive, Jedro Carteric. Next to Jerry’s pedestal is another. Only this one has an inscription but no bust. Did someone swipe it? NO, for this is the very appropriate monument to LARRY GLAB, the brilliant inventor who perfected a true vanishing cream. He’s been missing ever since That big tire with the head peeking through it is JANET FURNISH. She developed a secret formula containing old Model A tires which, when taken internally, gave a person the spark and life of three bottles of Hadacol. The bust of LARRY HARRELL is next. Let’s see, it gives his birth but says the date of death unknown. That’s because Larry was the test pilot who flew an experimental plane, the X-U81. He got going so fast that we think he flew into another century. The next division we enter is entitled Coaches, Players, Officials, and Avid Basketball Fan. (Fan?-I wonder who that is?!) The first athlete we see is FRANK LOVE, the first man to run the 4 minute mile; Frank ran from Aurora to Lawrenceburg in sixteen minutes; he didn’t want to stand the poor girl up. Going on down the line we find NORMAN MILES, first coach to take his team to the Rose Bowl for twenty straight seasons. (He’s got an uncle who gets them all free passes every year.) Next to Norman is another Notre Dame man, CHARLES STEIGERWALD. Charlie, the holder of the most yards gained in one season, ran 7,890,673 yards. (That’s the year Notre Dame was scoreless all season.) The next smiling face is that of CAPPY DAVIES, winner of the Women’s Decathlon of the Olympics. (She got her training dodging cars at Frisch’s.) RONALD KLINGELHOFFER’s determined face is next in line. He disguisedl himself and played for the Harlem Globetrotters for six seasons. Near Ronald stands his old friend, Hot-Rod LUHRSEN. DON was a famous driver until, during the Indianapolis 500, he decided his car wouldn’t go fast enough, so he got out and ran. “HINK” JOHNSON, successful coach of the Dodgers, coached them to five straight pennants before they were skunked in the crucial game of the sixth, 79-0 by the Cincinnati Redlegs. Well, enough sports! Shall we move on? What’s that? Who’s the avid Basketball Fan? Oh, that’s just Mrs. Simpson! Next is a mixed group of people whom I forgot to put where they belonged. Here is MIRIAM QUERY, famous novelist. She wrote a book so terrific that Mike Hammer and Scarlet O’Hara blushed while reading it. It was all about a boy who played the bugle at Boy Scout meetings. In the movie version, DAN RULLMAN played the lead and did a swell job. Since then he’s been retired and now plays the bugle to open the Kentucky Derby. Along the same row of statues is BRYAN NIELDS. Bryan was one time Drum Major for the U. S Marine Band, until he fell down while strutting onto the field before a performance. He’s since been demoted to 3rd flugelhorn player. Inside this closet is the bust of PETE FOX, traitor. He was shot for turning the country over to the Democrats. His last wish was that he never have to see another Republican; that’s why he’s been put away here. Another so called scientist is LARRY JGIFFIN. He thought he had found a formula that made him invulnerable. (You know-like Wonder Woman.) He decided to test it by catching a bowling ball dropped from the Washington Monument. BILL POHLMAN did the dirty work and after they had scraped Larry out of the finger holes in the ball, Bill was indicted on third degree murder charges We won’t know the outcome until SHIRLEY PETERS, his lawyer, gets done arguing her case before the jury. She’s been at it for seven years now. (We all always thought she was a little long-winded.) The next group is headed by MARGARET GULLETTE, proprietress of swank night club, “Creek View”. She took her establishment and turned it into the entertainment spot of Dearborn County. The rest of the group are the figures of those who rose to fame performing at the club: RHODONA HEADY, who every night opened the program with her lovely arrangement of “Too Fat Polka”; DON McINTOSH, the waiter who did his amazing trick of pulling the tablecloth out from under the ‘ ‘dishes” every night; and quiet little BECKY HARRELL, who danced to the tune of “Kiss of Fire.” The next figure is CAROL FUGITT, national head of the 4-H for 49 years. She was shooting for fifty, but they found out that she had been having NORMA BAILEY, President of the American Housewives, can the beans that she had won a blue ribbon with. The next statue is JANET MATTOX. Janet was making a fortune modeling eye glasses, until her eyes suddenly improved to 20-20 vision DALE MOELLER, the next victim-er-subject, cornered the market on chicken feed and had every chick in the country eating out of his hand. DORIS HOUZE, that next statue, holds the national record for stamping books. She beat out competition from all over the country, and as a reward now runs the Aurora Public Library. Along the same line is BETTY PEELMAN. She holds the record for typing-260 words per minute. That cylinder block on the next pillar is in honor of HAROLD HIGHSMITH. He was the only man to ever atempt to build and operate a V-7 engine. It ran quite well, but he only got one mile to the gallon. The next figure is BETTY GRAY: she was the brains behind her husband, a six star general. She is credited with preventing six major wars; everyone was afraid to fight us as long as she was on our side Next to Betty is ELEANOR DONK. She was JERRY ROBINSON’s laboratory assistant and she finally begged him into finding a growth serum. She was the first and last victim to drink it; she grew six feet in one night and was crushed to death between the head and foot boards of her bed. That distinguished bust is that of Dr. CHARLES KINZER, who has written one book about the life of bumblebees and is now working on something about people, or the like. That statue with the two heads has a plaque to Ruth Ritchie. That was the pen name RUTH GATCH and GERALDINE RITCHIE used in writing their series of soap operas for TV-“Life Can Be Sad for Mary’s Other Husband”. It ran for twenty-five years with PATTY McGRAW as Mary’s first husband’s wife. She was a regular Arthur Godfrey of the soap operas until she broke down and married Mary’s second husband. What’s that, your honor, you like the idea? You think the city can afford a Hall of Fame-when?-in about 51,029 years?!? (Who knows, maybe it Will be built!)) Aurora Indiana OUR HISTORY Our class, like all others, started out as Freshmen back in the fall of 1950. After we had wandered through the halls like lost dogs for a few hours, we were rounded up and sent to our home room, dear old room nine. Many of us have spent a large number of our best noon hours in that dear old room, and have come to hate the sight of it. It was from this room, though, that our first officers, Patti Greathouse-Pres., Bob Reid-Vice Pres., Becki Harrell Sec., and Pete Fox-Treas., started our class out on the course that was to lead us to such fame that the following remarks have been heard: Mr. Rice-After another year like this I think I’ll go back to Guilford. Mr. Holtzclaw—Maybe the Dairy Queen business will stay good enough so that I can retire next year. Mr. Thorn-Will all the boys on the left file by after class and receive their passes. And so on. ad infinitum. During our Freshman year we won first prize with our float on early school life in Indiana, and really had a good laugh on the Sophomores with their poor excuse of a float. With our coming we also seemed to change the luck of the basketball team, for that year the Devils won the Sectional for the first time in six years and they have repeated this performance every year since. Also, during our Senior year, they managed to battle their way to the ranking of number nine in the state. When we came back as know-it-all Sophomores, we were split up and sent fighting to two different rooms: the boys to Mrs. Simpson’s stronghold and the girls to Mrs. Smith’s. Somehow we got together and again elected class officers; Larry Giffin-Pres., Jim Cheek-Vice Pres., Dave Huxsoll-Sec., and Jerry Carter- Treas. (all boys this time), and we also again won first prize for a float ‘Drums of Liberty’ and put those upstart Freshman who thought they had it won with their old haystack in their place. By the fall of 1952, most of us had made it to our Junior year and were now upper classmen For officers we had Roger Rullman-Pres., Bob Reid-Vice Pres., Marilyn Watts-Treas., and Larry Giffin-Treas. This year we were welcomed by all our old friends and in turn welcomed back Mr Platt, who had been absent most of our Soph. year. We then started to worry about our great moment-the Junior Prom. After a knockdown-dragout fight we all selected “South of the Border” for our theme. With Larry Giffin as our chairman we began the long haul of getting the thing ready. We crawled around in the lower hall painting cracked bricks, we balanced on the tops of ladders for hours, we tightened wires and loosened them, we had the best time of our lives. Finally, at six o’clock of THE night we all rushed home, jumped into our best clothes, and came back to listen to Charlie Kehrer’s Orchestra and to see Janet Furnish crowned Queen of the Ball. School let out two weeks later and then.three months later our senior year began. At last we were ail together again in Mr. Holtzy’s room and there we again elected officers (See page 10) This is the year of our victory over four years of high school life, the best four we’ve ever spent. This year we’ve had our good times and our troubles as you can see from our calendar, but don’t forget that when that last bell rang on May 21, and we all charged out that door, that you just completed your life among the grandest bunch of kids and teachers that you’ll ever find together in one place. Courtesy of Mrs. Simpson—Latin-meaning-to infinite.
