TO FRANCIS MATTINGLY For his untiring effort to field a winning football team, his sincerity and loyalty not only to the school, but to his country during its greatest conflict, we the class of ’50 dedicate our Aurora Borealis. WILFORD H. AYLOR President WILLIAM F. FEHRMAN Secretary E. GORDON TRESTER. JR. Treasurer H. E. DRIVER Superintendent Many improvements have been added to the Aurora Schools during the past year. A new room of desks was purchased for the Southside and the sidewalks around the building were repaired. A new hot water system has been installed for the rest room and kitchen. The P. T. A. with the help of the school board installed a new sink and cupboards and purchased many new utensils for use in the kitchen. The school is planning to start a hot lunch program for the children. A new hard surface, outside basketball court was laid at West Aurora. The furnaces were also overhauled with the addition of new blowers. A new R.C.A. projector and screen were added at the North Building and a new strip machine to show “stills” was also purchased. New liquid type duplicators were added at the North and South Building. The High School and the Northside were both painted on the outside. A new behind the Wheel drive course was instituted at the high school this year. The dual control car was obtained through Speckman Bros. Garage. New office furniture, including a new desk and chair for the clerk, was purchased for the office. Fourteen typewriters were replaced in the typing department, as we returned to the old system of replacing a typewriter after three years use. Several other pieces of equipment were added in the various other departments. DOROTHY UHLMANSIEK Dorothy, or “Dot” as she is known to everyone, is well-liked by all the students and she makes herself practically indispensable by performing many necessary duties. She handles most of the school’s funds, she is Mr. Driver’s private secretary, and she also sells school supplies in the office. Dot’s happy smile and sparkling brown eyes are a familiar and pleasing sight to everyone here at A. H. S. “JIM” Our faithful janitor, Jim Hambrink, who has been cleaning up our spilled ink and used paper for the past four years has been appreciated, although we didn’t always stop to tell him so. Early in the mornings he would fix the furnaces and would be the last one to leave in the evening. He was always there when we had a game or a dance giving everyone a helping hand and friendly smile. 4 EUGENE GABBARD Principal Mr. Gabbard has finished his second successful year at Aurora High School. It would be difficult to name the numerous jobs of Mr. Gabbard, for his duties vary. Keeping records of enrollment, students’ credit, and attendance, checking eligibility of athletes and being a good friend to all are some of the things that make his day at school no cinch.” Mr. Gabbard is a member of the National Educational Association, Indiana Secondary Principal, and the Aurora Rotary Club. We the graduating class of ’50 are grateful to him for his help and cooperation as a senior sponsor. MARIAN SMITH On their return to the sophomore year, the girls of the 1950 graduating class had a new dean, Marian Smith. It didn’t take them long to find out what a friendly and understanding person she is. At times when their excuses were slim, they didn’t get a long drawn out sermon, but some friendly advice. Although she is a Junior English teacher, dramatics teacher, and dean, she is never too busy to be consulted with the various problems of the girls of Aurora High School. Mrs. Smith has certainly done her part to help the 1950 class of girls and all the other girls of Aurora High School to grow into the better women of tomorrow. 6 FLORENCE ROLF A. Did you get tired of reading dry histories? Well, so did we. so here goes! We came, we saw. we conquered! On September 5. 1946. the Aurora High School was honored with the enrollment of one hundred ten of the most fun-loving characters that ever darkened its portals. Were we confused? Were we over-awed? No, with the exception of a few unfortunate ones who were unlucky enough to get caught in the wrong class. At our first class meeting we made our first big mistake. Our class officers were as follows: President. Bob Wright; Vice President, Tom Kaster; Secretary, Joan Rushworth; and Treasurer, Norman Kinnett. Oh, well, it could have been worse. We gave two successful dances which started us on our savings for the prom. The teachers heaved a sigh of relief when we returned in the fall as Sohpomores— one less year to worry about! We elected these officers: President, again Bob Wright; (will we never learn??) Vice President, Leon Kelly; Secretary, jean Matson, and Treasurer, Majel Curtis. The year was highlighted for us by our Christmas play Bang Goes Christmas”. So the acting was crumby, anyway, we liked it. Two more dances added to our small treasury. Our Junior year brought many new, exciting things. We discovered that we were under a new warden—Eugene F. Gabbard. The officers we elected were: President, Carroll Love; Vice President, Alan Newell; Secretary, June Kruse; and Treasurer, Herschey Kent. We paid for our class rings—will anybody lend me a dime? The Prom came and went, as all good things do. After weeks of wrestling with the crepe paper, Betty Robinson was crowned queen, and “Blue Moon” waned. Seventy-seven of us came back in the fall to rule the roost. This time we selected the following officers: President. Alan Newell; Vice President, Lester Miles; Secretary, Herschey Kent; and Treasurer, Nadine Acra. After a brief struggle with announcements, we proceeded on to Senior photos and caps and gowns, without half the trouble the teachers expected. Although we have written this half in fun; nevertheless, we will always remember our days at A. H. S., and hope to be remembered. They meet with the principal on all vital issues concerning the student body and also select assembly programs. During the past school year the Northside Parent Teachers Association, with Mrs. Leonard Fugitt as chairman of the Library Committee, contributed funds for the establishment of a library at Northside Elementary School. Although this group, organized by Mr. Holtzclaw, has just been active since the latter part of the previous school year, it has successfully engaged in many projects already. During last year’s tourney the members of this organization papered the gym and halls alike with good sportsmanship signs. Even during the summer months the club was acting in the form of a softball team. This year, under Mr. Holtzclaw’s able assistance, they have completed even more. Booster plates were sold to back the Red Devils; a clean speech campaign was started throughout the school; again at tourney time signs were made to boost the Devil’s morale; a mirror was obtained with funds from the club’s treasury and placed in the boy’s rest room. Topping off a year of work and accomplishments here, a District Conference was held here on March 30. Four hundred members attended from Hi-Y and affiliated clubs throughout the southeastern part of the state. In June of 1949, we took a trip through the Smoky Mountains and places of interest in the South. During the school months, we sell cards, magazines, and garden seeds to pay for the trips in the summer. We, also, have get togethers every six weeks. The F. F. They prepare the meals, under the direction of Mrs. Bruther, to be served daily in the cafeteria. Their aim is “To serve balanced meals at cost.” 50 WILLIAM PLATT Mr. Platt graduated from Aurora High School in 1939. He attended Indiana University for four years, after which he served his country in the United States Army for two years. Then, he taught music in Versailles High School for three years, building up their band and starting a marching band. We are very glad that Bill is now back in Aurora High School again, where he has already brought about a marked improvement in the music department. The Athletic Board consists of representatives of the student body who are appointed by the Student Council. Among their many duties are the selling and taking up of tickets at the football and basketball games and advertising them. A great deal of credit does to these behind-the-scene workers. 58 DON RITTEK Coach Ritter possesses probably the most colorful career of any coach to step in the Aurora Gym. He graduated from Aurora High School after leading the Devils through three of its most promising basketball years. In 1942 he entered Indiana University but had to discontinue his studies to help his country in World War II. Upon release from the Air corps, Mr. Ritter reentered Indiana where he gained nation-wide recognition as a basketball and baseball star. After graduation he came back to us in capacity of coach and his first campaign proved to be a success. Mr. Ritter will also coach the baseball team. LLOYD HOLTZCLAW Upon graduating from Letts High School, Mr. Holts claw entered Ball State where he majored in Mathematics and Physical Education. He then became coach at Kennard, Indiana in basketball, baseball, and track. In 1948 he joined the Aurora faculty and upon his return this year was assigned the job of building future Aurora stars. His record proved very impressive—17 wins and 3 defeats. Although his team was green at the beginning of the season, he soon rounded them into the most powerful second team in this section of the state. Mr. Holtzclaw will also coach the track team this year. FRANCIS MATTINGLY Mr. Mattingly came to Aurora last year from Purdue University where he attained a Bachelor of Physical Education. While attending the university he taught at Westside High School and played football. From 1940-46 he served in Uncle Sam’s Marine Corps as a fighter pilot. This year coach Mattingly accomplished a feat that had never been performed on the gridiron—he coached the Devils to their first win over Lawrence burg' Our hand is extended to him in grateful tribute! 59 LEFT to RIGHT Front Row: J. After four years, when Don Odle set the first Aurora eleven on the gridiron, coach Francis Mattingly led his charges through a grueling nine game schedule which finally led to the Southeastern Conference title. Numbered among their victims were: Lawrenceburg (2), North Vernon (default), and a strong Connersville eleven. Our hats off are to a great coach and equally grand guy, Francis Mattingly! Tigers could not solve the bruising smashes of Slayback and Gresham or the passing combination of Kubasiak to Baxter. This game was the last for the Seniors and to these eleven boys we extend our gratitude! 60 JIM SLAYBACK Jim, co-captain and fullback for the Red Devils, could always be counted on when a first down was needed. He played four years on the varsity which made him doubly essential this year. BOB WRIGHT Bob, co-captain and center, proved his ability by filling in the position of last year's captain, Clayton $ushman. He always worked hard in practice as well as in a game. DAN KUBASIAK Kuby, composed of brains and brawn, was the Devil quarterback this year and was one of the best passers in the conference. He will be greatly missed on next years squad. NORMAN KINNETT Norman, who suffered a broken ankle in his Sophomore year, returned in his Junior and Senior year to fill the left halfback position. He proved to be one of the Devil’s hardest running backs. 61 BUD BAXTER “A great pass receiver,” said an Associated Press reporter. Bud played three years on the varsity and was a good defensive player as well as an offensive threat. Slay back drives through Tiger offense to score! LYNN WEBER Lynn, who is only a junior this year, will be an essential part of next year’s squad. His experience this year should prove valuable to the 1950 edition of the Red Devils. Kuby hands to Kinnett who crashes through for another Aurora first down against the orange-and-black! DAN MEYER Although small of stature, Dan was very shifty and a hard driver. The experience he picked up in his junior year proved of great value to him and his teammates. DAN KUBASIAK Dan, a very deceptive ball handler and dribbler, proved his ability by playing on the first five. A good team man he could always be counted on for a fine performance. V Another loss to graduation. MNR� 11 RON WELLER Ron, in his second year of varsity basketball, will be a valuable player next year. He was in there playing hard all the' way and can be counted upon to get his share of points and rebounds in every game. BILL JOHNSTON Bill's height made him a valuable player in both defensive and offensive plays. He could be depended upon to get his share in rebounds. Another loss due to graduation. JOHN BORGMAN John, a reliable player, could be counted upon to do his best in every game. Quick on his feet, he was a good guard and team player. Since John is a senior he will be a great loss to the team. JIM SLAYBACK Jim, captain and one of the outstanding players on the Red Devil Squad, was an offensive threat at all times. Jim will be greatly missed on next years team, as he was a high scoring guard. 63 RUSSELL BAXTER Bud could be put in the hardest game and could be counted upon to hold his own. He was put in many games when the going was tough and always came through with Hying colors. He too will be lost because of graduation. EDDIE SCHONEGG Ed was a magician at ball handling in his first year on the varsity. Since he is a junior he will probably get the assignment of playing center on next years team. We’ll see plenty of this boy next year. DAN MEYER Dan. a very capable substitute could be depended upon to do his share in every game. A very aggressive and hard working player. Another valuable loss due to graduation. HERSCHEL KENT Herschey.wasa good shota was capable of holding his 01 in any game. He w'ould ha been a regular on most tean Another loss due to graduatic ARTHUR RAHE Art, one of the juniors that made the team, was always a dead shot from the corners. He will be a sure starter on next years five. CHARLES DEWERS Charlie, in his first year of varsity basketball, could always be counted on to give a good account of himself when he was sent into a game. He too will be lost because of graduation. RONALD SKIDMORE Skid contributed a lot to the team by his faithful attendance io practice and when called upon in a game could handle his assignments. BASKETBALL BATESVILLE—39 AURORA—31 The Red Devils opened their 1949-50 season with a defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs. The game was close all the way until the final minutes. Johnny Borgman led Aurora with 11 points. AURORA—36 BROWNSTOWN—29 Inability to hit from the field almost proved fatal to the home crew. The Devils came to life in the final quarter to grab the victory. Ronnie Weller led the team with 13 markers. LAWRENCEBURG—53 AURORA—30 The Red and White got off to a very poor start. The inspired Devils came back in the second half to play on even terms with the Tigers. AURORA—52 MOORES HILL—27 The Aurora boys proved too much for the Bobcats. The Devils got off to a quick start and never relinquished their lead. AURORA—47 BROOKVILLE—38 The Devils made the Greyhounds their third victim. It was a well deserved win for the Red and White. Art Rahe led the Ritterites scorching the nets for 14 points. AURORA—31 BLOOMINGTON—23 The Devils had to travel a long way to bring this one home. They played excellent defensive ball and were never headed. AURORA—50 MILAN—37 Win number five is registered by the Red and White. Off to an amazing 16-1 first quarter lead, the Devils were never headed. HAMILTON (OHIO)—40 AURORA—37 The Red Devils suffer their third loss at the hands of the Big Blue. Ohio State champions of the 1948-49 campaign. A fourth quarter rally fell a little short. AURORA—51 RISING SUN—39 A very close game until the final quarter, when the Devils broke away. Jim Slayback led our boys with 12 points. MADISON—63 AURORA 13 The Devils fell before the powerful Cubs, although they started well. Jim Slayback led the Devils with 16 points. 66 BASKETBALL LAWRENCEBURG—52 AURORA—29 Tigers again prove too much for Devils. Once again we came to life in the second half to play on even terms with the up-the-river-crew. AURORA—51 BATESVILLE—35 Probably playing their best game of the season, the home crew avenged their earlier season defeat by pronging the Bulldogs on the Dogs court. Jim Slayback led the Devil’s attack with 22 points. CONNERSVILLE—33 AURORA—32 This was the battle between the two home-town coaches, Pete Driver of the Spartans and Don Ritter of the Devils. The Ritterities rally in waning moments was just a little short. AURORA-69 NORTH VERNON—47 The Devils combine to compile the highest total of the year. Jim Slayback and Ed Schonegg led the Red and White with 22 and 13 points respectively. AURORA—50 VEVAY—33 Devils rack up win number nine at the expense of the Warriors. Coach Don Ritter inserted the Reserves for most of the second half. AURORA—44 SILVER CREEK—38 A very good ball game all the way, with the Devils leading throughout. Bill Johnston led the home town boys with 13 points. AURORA—61 SCOTTSBURG—58 A very close ball game all the way with the Red and White managing to stay out in front. Jim Slayback ripped the net for 24 points to lead the Devils. AURORA—61 EDINBURG—55 The Devils last tune-up before the sectional. They closed the regular season with a record of 12 wins and 6 losses. Slayback, Weller, and Kubasiak paced the home crew with 20, 15, and 13 respectively. Having only five men returning from the previous year, Coach Holtzclaw rounded into shape a well balanced team which had height, speed, and most important of all, knowledge of how to handle the ball. Mixing these ingredients together, plus able substitutions what else could you expect. You guessed it, sixteen wins against two defeats, with R. Schultz and J. Ruble taking scoring honors with one hundred and twenty-six and one hundred and twenty-two points respectively. A very successful season. Besides season play the Imps entered into a blind tournament at Patriot. The other teams participating were Rising Sun and Vevay’s First Teams. The Imps lost the first game in the afternoon to Rising Sun but came back in the evening to defeat Patriot. EUGENE HENRY Eugene Henry, of the Junior class, was an added attraction this year, for our basketball season. Wearing a red devil’s suit, he was the mascot for our team. He dressed for most of the important games and usually brought them good luck. 72 CHEER LEADERS This year our cheering section was led by Mary Carolyn Dennerline. Margie Coleman, and Jane Neeley, who were elected by the student body. These girls did much to keep the teams spirits high and gave them the will to win. They made a very fine showing at the sectional at Vevay, and were voted as the best cheer leaders down there. 2ND TEAM CHEER LEADERS JoAnn Kennedy, Nancy Barrott. and Gwen Nebelsick served as yell leaders for the second team. You 66 new members make a total of 2.327 who have been taken into the Alumni Association. We are now 53 years old having been organized in 1896. One of our members, Miss Julia Spaeth, has never missed an Alumni Reception. Incidentally, this year marks the 60th reunion of her class. Our oldest living graduate is Flora Platter Van Hounten of the class of 1889. The class of 1921 has for several years been the oldest class without a death. Mr. Jay C.
