Cn Sep' tember 17 the Postulants enjoyed the spiritual encouragement of their Retreat Master, Reverend john V. Casey. The next big event to come our way was the patriotic program celebrated in honor of the Freedom Train. Fall came on and the stars of the football field soon made themselves known. Luke Hally and Stanley Smith were among the best in this regard. The next skill to become evident was our flair for drama. Mickey Gallagher started the ball rolling by his part in a Thanksgiving skit called, Miss Schrewburys School. The midfterms were followed by the Term Holiday and a trip to see Monsieur Vincent. Shortly afterwards came the Saint Patrick's Gaudeamus in which we presented our first skit, a Mister Anthony Skit, written by Joseph Rafter. Stush Smith created quite a riot that night as a problem-ladden wife telling her troubles to Joe, who played Mister Anthony. After this comedy came drama in a more serious vein, the Passion Play. The freshmen were well represented by Mike Gallagher, Paul Jamison, and Bob Skinner. There followed in quick succession the solemn ceremonies of Holy Week, the Easter vacation, and the return to complete our year. A biology exhibit was the last big thing of our freshmen year, and on June 24 we became sophomores. With the new year and studies we also greeted new members to our ranks, John Vesey and Michael Potocznick. The retreat this year was given hy Father Purcell, then a member of the Villanova faculty. It was at the Halloween Gaudeamus of this year that we created one of our biggest successes, My Friend Irving. Stan Smith, Mike Gallagher, and joe Rafter were the stars of this play. Shortly before the Thanksgiving vacation the school held an elimination contest to see who would represent the school in the American Legion speech contest. Joseph Rafter won this contest and on December 2 also took first prize in the Island competition. Time was going faster now, and before we knew it the midfterms were upon us and then thc Term Holi' day trip to see The Titan. We were again repref sented in the Saint Patrick's Gaudcamus and like our first year the Postulants staycd here dur' ing Holy Week. On April 17 we returned from our Easter vacation and soon the finals gave us our first taste of the Regents. We had climbed another step higher, now we were juniors. Our junior year went even faster than the others. We were again in the Halloween Gaudeamus, and shortly afterwards the Thanks' giving vacation again brought us a pleasant recess. However, the athletes of our class were showing skill that they had never shown before in the varsity games. We had no Term Holiday trip that year but stayed to see a Novice received. The Saint Patrick Gaudeamus previewed the coming Easter vacation and on March 16 the Postulants went home and the Day Students made their annual retreat. Late that May the school presented a play entitled The Loyal Traitor, and the juniors were represented by joseph Rafter. The next big thing in dramatics was of a lighter nature, but of equal importance. For on the last night of school the juniors treated the graduates with a banquet and the traditional junior Gaudeamus. Finally we were in our last year at the Rock , and the time continued to fly. We presented an' other skit for Halloween, and for Thanksgiving the Day Students sponsored a dance in the school hall. The Christmas vacation quickly came and with it the celebration of Father Pambiancds Golden jubilee. Then came the midfterms and the trip to see .Quo Vadis on Term Holiday. The big thing of this time of year was our amazing and proud record in our basketball games. The Postulants made their retreat early this year, and our retreat master was again Father Casey. The Day Students, as in the year before, made their retreat during Holy Week. Then came the Easter vacation and the return to complete-not just an' other school year-but our stay at the Academy. They were busy and exciting months: several of our number won various awards. We did espe' cially well in the Latin contest sponsored by the Catholic Classical Association of New York, joseph Gawarkiewicz won an award for his com' position in an history essay contest, our senior golf team received an award. The play this year was Brother Petroc's Return, and three of our number represented the class in this. Then came the long awaited invitation mailing and the review for the finals. Now with our career at the Academy behind us, we, the class of '52, look back and recall with pride our career at our Alma Mater. 6652 ac NAME Anthony Brown Joseph Clark Paul Crews Jerome DeForest Peter DeMarzio joseph Dunn Michael Flynn Richard Foley Robert Fredericks Michael Gallagher joseph Gawarkiewie Luke Hally Robert Hickey Paul Jamison Bernard Keubler William Lane Peter Napolitano joseph Rafter Nicholas Rinaldi Robert Skinner Jerome Smith Roy Smith Stanley Smith Donald Tierney Hugh Tunny john Vesey joseph Yost 0 flee .gbniorfi Eigdfenri flue may SEEN MOST AT WITH FOR WHAT Notre Dame Basketball T. While the attaining of a diploma means the completion of our high school course, it also means the parting of the ways for most graduates. These halls of Augusf tinian Academy do not merely contain memories of scholastic achievements but also memories of our common friendship. We take pleasure in recollecting the teachers and classmates who have enjoyed with us the passing of one of the most pleasant milestones on our life's journey. In order to preserve our memories of these eventful years, the annual staff has attempted to compose a worthy memento of our former teachers, class' mates, and activities at the Academy. The exiled Aeneas once proclaimed to his Trojan followers when they were wandering on foreign shores, forsan et haec olim meminisse juvahitn. BACK ROVV, Left to Right: Rev. Thomas Purcell, O.S.A., Coach, Robert Steel, Robert Brennan, Thomas O'Hrien. Edward McCarthy, Thomas XValsh, Casimir Bianowicz, Manager 4 wiv, . Early in October. Reverend Thomas P. Purcell, O.S.A,, called a meeting of all prospective candidates for the varsity basketball team. After a long series the team of 1951f52 was taken from this large number of candidates. Bob Skinner, Bob Fredericks. Paul Crews. Don Tierney. and jim Sherry were our veterans, and Ed Dobbin. Charles Semon, Luke Hally. Tony Spina, and Mike Flynn were newcomers. 1t is interesting to note that for the first time since 1947 an Augie team has been bolstered by Postulants. The 1951152 season has proven to be the greatest season in the history of the Academy. The varsity has won 16 and lost 4. This is a tremendous improvement over last yearls 5f8 record. Two of the most notable wins are onefpoint victories over Tottenville High. 4443. and Curtis. 25-24. ln beating Curtis and Tottenville the varsity scored mayor upsets. since these schools have an enrollment so much greater than ours. As we look back in the 1951152 season. we look back on the greatest in Augie history. lt was a season that saw ten straight ivins for the Augres and many previous records shattered, ltls a season we look back upon with pride. 35 Il Y Sllllll TS' Hlllllllll 1 i 1 FRONT ROW, Left to Right: William Lane, joseph Gawarkiewicz, Peter DeMarzio, Bernard Kuebler, Peter Napof litano. joseph Tost, Michael Flynn. As the football season rolled around, an intramural football league was organized under the direction of Reverend Angus N. Carney, 0.S.A. The league was part: of the physical edu' cation in the program of the school, and all the Day Students were required to compete. The various classes were divided into teams and as a result many exciting games were played. At the end of the league an allfstar league was chosen, and it is composed of William Lane, Joseph Gawarkiewicz, Peter DeMarzio, Bernard Keubler, Peter Napolitano, joseph Yost, Michael Flynn, Nicholas Rinaldi, Robert Skinner, Donald Tierney, Paul Jamison, and Paul Crews. The spirit of the league was one of good clean sportsmanship, and for this we must apply thanks to our moderator, Father Carney, and the umpires chosen daily from the ranks of the Day Students. The success of the league is vested more in this spirit than in the physical exercise that was gained. And the league this year was very successful. DAY SIUIII TS' BASHlAll FRONT ROW, Left to Right: James Sherry, James Same, Paul Crews. James Shea, Robert Hopkins. BACK ROW' Left to Right: Thomas Gannon, Paul Jamison, Joseph Yost, Robert Skinner. Anthony Spina, Casimir Bianowicz As the yearbook goes to press, the base' ball season has not yet begun. Therefore this description of the doings of the varsity baseball team will be somewhat incomplete. Rev. Angus N. Carney, OSA., in his second year as Coach of the Augies, held a pref season meeting to determine who will compose the team. It is expected that Paul Jamison, Joseph Yost and Paul Crews will do the pitchingf-ref placing Bill Crews and Jerry Duff, lost through graduation. Paul Jamison, Casimir Bianowic:, Luke Hally or Thomas Gannon will probably do the catching it Jamison does not fill a berth on the mound. Jim Sherry or Tom Wzilsli will make a bid for first base, while the remainder of the inf held will be divided among Bob Skinner, Paul Crews, Tony Spina, Jim Shea, and Bob Hopkins. The outiield will be patroled by Jim Sauce, Pete Napolitano, Bernard Kuebler, or Bill Lane. As in the past years the school will meet both local and outside competition. As the diamond begins to steal the lime' light as Americas number one sport, it is the hope of the team and of Fr. Carney that the Augie Aggregation will regain the position of one of the most feared teams in Staten Island. PIISTUM l BASHlAll FRONT ROW. Left to Right: john Hughes, Stanley Smith, Michael Gallagher, Robert Young, Thomas Gannon. BACK ROW, Left to Right: james Conway, Duane Morningrecl, Anthony Spina. Luke Hally, Robert Hopkins, Francis Reilly, joseph Farrell. Early in Oetoher the foothall leagues were formed and the first and most enthusiastic of our intramural sports was hegun. In the senior league the competition was stiff, and no one knew just who was going to he the winner. It was Father Willizxnis' teams that finally carried the slippery pigskin to victory. In the junior league .lohn Duddy's Eagles zoomed out in front and stayed there all season. After the foothall season there came a period when haskethall, volley hall, and soccer were played hy various piekfup teams, The haskethall was the closest to having an organized league, hut in all three exciting, elose games were to he found. The hig advantage of volley hall was that it could he played on the top of the hill when the field was muddy. For this reason, it was the game most frequently played during the winter season. But the snows melted and the hard ground of the field softened to the dust of the hasehall diamond. This also was played on a full scale with a league containing all the Postulants. Since the yearhook is going to press at the heginning of the season it is possihle only to predict the highlights of the season. Luke Hally, Stan Smith, and Duane lvlorf ningred are the veteran stars of the diamond. lt is expected that Tony Spina and Jim Conway will he valuahle assets to their teams. Enough of the season has progressed to predict who will compose the allfstar team, which is pictured. Allfinfall this year has heen a hetter than average year in our intramural sports. It has prof vided many thrills, tough competition, and exeitf ing seasons. PllSllllANl B SKllllAll Top: Fr. Purcell, L. Hally. F. Reilly. Bottom: Bro. Charles, N. Duddv. Top: F. Israel, Hughes, T.
