YOU CAN HEAR, FROM FAR AND NEAR, A WORLD YOU ' VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE . . . YOU CAN SEE FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER AND EVERMORE I HE PRESIDENT REFLECTS ON A CLEAR DAY 1 Being President of Augustana College for ten years has been an exhilarating experience! In that time, I have been constantly reassured by students, faculty, and staff who have adopted the stance, consciously or not, of standing tall, looking around for new opportunities to learn, to teach, and to serve. Despite vagaries of these times, including some uncertainty and retrenchment in higher education, Augustana has never been more successful in fulfilling its mission. In short, these are clear days on this campus. We are thankful for our traditional liberal arts strength which forms an essential and humanizing base for all our students. Yet we look around our- selves constantly to add new professional and career programs to a curriculum already well balanced, in order that the Augustana student may apply his liberal arts knowledge and va- lues in a practical way to better serve God, na- ture, and his or her fellow man. Each member of the Augustana community must strive to keep open the lines of commun- ication with his or her God. The psychologist, William James, had a favorite quotation from the Bible. It was from the book of Ezekiel. Eze- kiel was having .his trouble with the Israelites of his time, who were as the Bible says, a rebel- lious house, impudent children and stiff- hearted. They were not interested in spiritual ytm M.fi â– warnings and Ezekiel sought counsel from his God, and as he prayed he fell on his face . And then in the Second Chapter of Ezekiel it says the Lord said to Ezekiel, Son of Man, stand on thy feet and I will speak to you. In other words according to William James, the Truth will be revealed only if one has the cour- age to seek it and to face it. This posture is encouraged at Augustana when we ask stu- dents to Rise and look around you . . . Reli- gious life at Augustana is not an isolated part- of learning or experience, but is an integral aspect of our total college environment. No matter what form it takes, the intent is always to communicate the basic Christian faith in ways that are relevant to contemporary times. The need is there: I think Augustana is trying to answer it creatively and responsibly. iund us we must remember to the student look at nature through many always encourage each member of the Augus- • lenses to see the significance of our earth to ' ti£ia community to keep open the lines of com- ourselves and to our descendants. nication with nature. I believe that Au- being made. If better communication can be gustana College is very well qualified to help established with God and with nature, wouldn ' t it follow that our fellow man would ultimately be better served, also. One may not only serve mankind by learning Greek or Wordsworth and thus liberalizing himself, but modern techno- logy and social sciences have also opened many doors toward this end. Many of Augus- tana ' s academic majors and much of the col- lege ' s outreach program are contributing here by providing a detailed look at problems con- fronting those less fortunate than ourselves and helping provide solutions toward helping them realize a better life ahead. Is there much more to life than learning about and serving God. nature, and our fellow man? On these clear days I see Augustana ' s past record, present energy, and future com- mitment as giving this college — its students, faculty, and staff — a unique opportunity to continue to rise and look around us in pursuing the highest spiritual, aesthetic, and humane goals to which mankind can aspire. Special Education FACULTY 41 NATURAL SCIENCES In an era of spectacular technological achievement there is an extreme danger that advances in our capacity to alter the human condition may far outstrip our ability to main- tain a proper balance of social responsibility. There are endless moral, ethical, and theological implications asso- ciated with most technical progress. Thus the faculty of the Natural Science Division assume that we must prepare our students to insure that they are not only highly competent in their primary disciplines but also that they are broadly prepared in those disciplines that emphasize an increased awareness of distinctively human qualities. We cann ot ha- zard the chance of educating a generation of people who may become insensitive to their moral obligation to insure that technical competence is not sufficient unto itself. Our goal must continue to be to strive toward an increased awareness of the importance of sensitivity, compassion, understanding, warmth and love. — Dr. S.G. A college ought to be founded to contribute to a world which asks for involvement and con- cern; that contribution can only be made by promoting and guiding the personal creativity of people. And Au- gustana, since its conception, seems to me continually dedicated to this goal with its dynamic atmosphere of relations — ideas and people growing and developing with each other. — Dennis Olson 1 feel thankfulness toward God who has given me many undeserved bless- ings and also gratitude to my parents and teachers who have given me the opportunity to learn, the encourage- ment and understanding that have helped me. — Barb Friedrich Herb Krause serious Milt and Clara Harvey receive the Antiquarian Edition of Prelude to Glory. 98 FOUNDERS DAY Barb Friedrich Dennis Olson I feel that Sophomore Honors is a very special sort of award, since aca- demics is Augustana ' s major function. In the action-packed days before finals and the end of another term, students are busy participating in a variety of events. But, somehow, in all thehectic moments, we somehow find time to return our attention once again to the Child, whose Life gives meaning to our existence. It is then that Augustana becomes a reflection of love; and in that love Augustana finds the essence of Christmas. — Sarah Hotze Instead of cookies and milk Santa gets kisses and hugs. Despite some workability prob- lems, generally I think the conven- tion was a success. We had a total of 22 candidates who turned in pe- titions before the convention, com- pared to 2 in 74. 6 in ' 73. 8 in 72. All of the 15 positions were con- tested (something which hasn ' t happened since the beginning of the system). Speeches and speeches and Peter Hackes gives the keynote speech. 130 And we had record-breaking numbers of students running for tfie 2 froshi council-positions— a total of 11. Despite a resolution by off-campus to eliminate the convention system for next year due to a difficulty in finding delegates I think that the interest generated for council positions justi- fies the continuation of the system, with modifications. —Carol Hansen Confident candidates Dennis Olson and Bob Collins. USIASM GREETS GERALD FORD AND MARGARET CHASE SMITH President Ford delivers his speech to the people from the area. lull Mid-term election campaigns in the United States have provided only a riimal amount of interest and exci- Tient in past years. In direct con- trast, the 1974 mid-term election cam- paigns were filled with a great deal of inquisitiveness and emotional enthu- siasm that became a part of Augus- tana and its ' community first semes- ter. Sioux Falls Arena was the site of the mass public rally held for Presi- dent Gerald R. Ford on behalf of the South Dakota Republican candidates. In less than an hour the arena was filled to capacity while many people waited outside, perhaps, to sneek a glance at Ford, or better yet, shake his hand. President Ford was the first pre- sident to ever come to Sioux Falls while still in office. J vt rr-i: Ford poses briefly for pictures. President Ford is greeted with much enthusiasm by his fans. 268 PRESIDENT FORD The Senator and Major General tackle questions of the students. Margaret Chase Smith speaks briefly to students and faculty. All who came in contact with the Senator felt a warm feeling of affection Senator Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to be elected to the United States Senate, and her ad- ministrative assistant, Major Gen- eral William C. Lewis became members of the Augustana College community for an entire week dur- ing November. Senator Smith and Major General Lewis came to Augustana with a desire to learn something about the school and its students. Each morning they joined Augustana students for breakfast where they could ask their share of questions about school and classes. The Senator and Major General spoke at classes, discussion groups, and chapel. They both showed ex- haustive honesty and outstanding integrity, and overwhelmed the stu- dents with their capability and en- ergy. Major General Lewis delivers his speech.
