South Dakota's native son George McGovem and his wife Eleanor arrive in Sioux Falls for election eve. The youth have the vote! They could sway the election! These two statements set the tone for the 1972 election campaigns of Richard Nixon and George McGovern. McGovern and other Democrats claimed the spotlight at Augustana as national television filmed segments for broadcast in the Morrison Commons. KAUR taped interviews with national celebrities for replay. Republican, Democratic and Socialist Workers Party tables offering propaganda and buttons cluttered the commons--all courting the youth vote. As election eve approached, students' anxiety grew. Dem- ocrats felt the race would be close,' Nixon had blown his chances by deceiving the people with the promise of peace. Some Republicans began to worry, feeling that the longer the campaign lasted, the weaker Nixon's support would become because of the continued Vietnam conflict. From the primaries to the arrival of McGovern in Sioux Falls, to the end of the election when Richard Nixon was re-elected President, the Augustana Student body was indeed involved in the election. 10 ,,.,k X C McGovern Comes Home wi Strike up the band!
