KA l f'H has improved immensely since its first tension-filled, nerve- tvraching' opening days in Uctober of 1972, and there is no limit to the , expansion and creative effort that can 1 em anate from the studios in Viking i Vil la. As I see it, there are five major objectives that KA UR should follow for the future: I. To all intent program materials that are designed to offer the listener an alternative sound source. A program ser- vice that brings the listener materi- Q als that will educate, enlighten, andf or entertain. Kaleidoscope What eLse would you expect from this group. To serve as a means of expanding the general knowledge and understanding of those students who possess a sincere interest in the field of radio communications. 4. To present program materials with the best possible profes- sional competency attainable within the KA UR resources. 5. To conduct the affairs of KAUR-FM at all times in concert with the philosophy and policy of Augustana College. Using these guidelines, KAUR can be an alternative, exciting and informative voice to the community from Augustana. Jay Werth, Station Manager

KA UR's greatest challenge has been to pro- duce public affairs or information pro- grams that are unique, interesting, and down-to-earth. The Open End has been our most successful program with panel discussions and telephone conver- sations ranging from abortion to the relevance of religion in today's so- ciety. As a non-commercial educational- ly licensed station, KAUR must strive to produce programs that are of an informative or educative nature. This Ls the type of programming that is the hardest to plan and produce as well as demanding the most creativity by mem- bers of the staff. It is also pro- gramming that doesn't fit into the oft stereotyped image of what I call humanoid jukebox radio time, tem- perature, music, news-repeated ad- infinitum throughout the broadcast day insulting the listener's . ears as well as his intelligence. South Dakota's native son George McGovem and his wife Eleanor arrive in Sioux Falls for election eve. The youth have the vote! They could sway the election! These two statements set the tone for the 1972 election campaigns of Richard Nixon and George McGovern. McGovern and other Democrats claimed the spotlight at Augustana as national television filmed segments for broadcast in the Morrison Commons. KAUR taped interviews with national celebrities for replay. Republican, Democratic and Socialist Workers Party tables offering propaganda and buttons cluttered the commons--all courting the youth vote. As election eve approached, students' anxiety grew. Dem- ocrats felt the race would be close,' Nixon had blown his chances by deceiving the people with the promise of peace. Some Republicans began to worry, feeling that the longer the campaign lasted, the weaker Nixon's support would become because of the continued Vietnam conflict. From the primaries to the arrival of McGovern in Sioux Falls, to the end of the election when Richard Nixon was re-elected President, the Augustana Student body was indeed involved in the election. 10 ,,.,k X C McGovern Comes Home wi Strike up the band!
