KA UR's greatest challenge has been to pro- duce public affairs or information pro- grams that are unique, interesting, and down-to-earth. The Open End has been our most successful program with panel discussions and telephone conver- sations ranging from abortion to the relevance of religion in today's so- ciety. As a non-commercial educational- ly licensed station, KAUR must strive to produce programs that are of an informative or educative nature. This Ls the type of programming that is the hardest to plan and produce as well as demanding the most creativity by mem- bers of the staff. It is also pro- gramming that doesn't fit into the oft stereotyped image of what I call humanoid jukebox radio time, tem- perature, music, news-repeated ad- infinitum throughout the broadcast day insulting the listener's . ears as well as his intelligence. 9 Q ! Again, on the plus side, one of our most successful entertainment programs has been Cruisin' For Burgers. Many nights the phone rings constant- ly with requests on this 50s style -music show. '2Iazz: The Inti- mate Art we took pride in primarily due to Gene White's professional com- mentary and insight into the world of jazz. Overall our music program- ming was varied to satisfy and appeal to almost any taste. Judging from the comments we received, KAUR's coverage of the ASA nominating convention was the year's highlight. We were excited to cover the event and pleased that listeners enjoyed our coverage. I , 4, W' B while adding color and excitement for non-delegatw. KA l f'H has improved immensely since its first tension-filled, nerve- tvraching' opening days in Uctober of 1972, and there is no limit to the , expansion and creative effort that can 1 em anate from the studios in Viking i Vil la. As I see it, there are five major objectives that KA UR should follow for the future: I. To all intent program materials that are designed to offer the listener an alternative sound source. A program ser- vice that brings the listener materi- Q als that will educate, enlighten, andf or entertain. Kaleidoscope What eLse would you expect from this group. These six people spend numerous program hours at the mike with Take lt Easy. 2. To promote better communications with the Augustana Community as well as with the entire listening community. 3. To serve as a means of expanding the general knowledge and understanding of those students who possess a sincere interest in the field of radio communications. 4. To present program materials with the best possible profes- sional competency attainable within the KA UR resources. 5. To conduct the affairs of KAUR-FM at all times in concert with the philosophy and policy of Augustana College. Using these guidelines, KAUR can be an alternative, exciting and informative voice to the community from Augustana. Jay Werth, Station Manager
