Twenty nine years ago, Augustana welcomed Dr. Carl R. Youngdahl to the faculty, and its pride in him has risen with every passing year. Beside his excellent directing of the choir and his molding of inexperienced stu- dents into accomplished singers, Dr. Young- dahl is himself a composer and organist of ability. Hand in hand with his abilities goes the inevitable, a kind and friendly personality which makes us feel honored to dedicate this book to him. Jr Fw: W S n ,fm -ww YM XJ! In the spring of 1949, Dean Helen Farley, spade in hand, broke the first ground for Augustana's latest project, the construction of a new women's dorm. Following the comple- tion of the science and music buildings, it falls in the center of building plans, for it pre- cedes a new library and a men's dormitory. Progressive Augustana has her eyes turned toward the future. Top - Dean Farley at ground breaking. Center - Dorm in progress. Right - Pres. He is a graduate of St. Olaf and Luther Theological Seminary and has served as pastor at Tacoma, Wash., and Northfield, Minn. In addition to his work on the campus Dr. Stavig was this year elected president of the Na- tional Lutheran Council. Dr. I. B. Hauge, Dean of Augustana, keeps the ball rolling in the executive personnel office. He received his A.B. from St. Olaf and his A.M. and Ph.D. from the U. of Iowa. Besides shoveling walks and teach- ing psychology, Walter B. Leino is Dean of Men this year. Mr. Leino re- ceived his A.B., B.S., and A.M. degrees from the U. of Minnesota. Taking good care of the girls in Ladies Hall is Helen Farley, Dean of Women. Miss Farley is a graduate of St. Olaf and received her A.M. at the U. of Iowa. With a majority of Lutheran stu- dents, it is natural that the Sioux Falls Lutheran churches become a center of spiritual life. Students teach Sunday School, attend leagues, and sing in choirs. Dr. J. J. Glenn, assisted by Rev. C. J. Swanson, is pastor at First Lutheran. Across the street from Augie is Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, with Rev. H. M. Blegen as pastor. Accomplished by this year's student council, under Al Farley, was the signing of a tri- school peace pact with the University and State College, declaring that raids on each other's campuses were forbidden in an effort to stop the excessive damage done by raiding parties during previous years in pre-Home- coming fervor. ' .Senior . . 1946-1947 - Freshmen swelled the Augustana enroll- ment to an all time high, 947 students, 501 of them veterans. This called for many changes in classes, housing, and dining facilities on the Augustana cam- pus. Dr. Stavig made a journey to China in behalf of the church. Bob Fitch, World Discus Champion, was added to the faculty list. The choir made a grand tour to the west coast, college little theatre emphasis rose again with I Remember Mama as a send-off. Two members of the freshman class gave the college their original musical production of Johnny Goes To College. B 1947-1948 - A great school year for putting ideas into practice, it saw the first evidences of Venture, Augustana's literary magazine, KOLE flater KAURJ, campus radio station, a new student constitution, Career Days, and the Spring Festival sponsored by the social board. Debaters Won many honors, and A Little Learning, sequel to Johnny, was staged. Then there was the unforgettable win over State College in basketball with the score 51 to 50. 1948-1949 - Progress continued with dedication of the two new buildings, the science hall and music hall. The ground was broken for the new wornen's dorm. A grand and glorious 25th Anniversary home- coming, with paint brush raids by State College, a parade through downtown Sioux Falls, and a win over the Morningside Maroons, 21-14, in our football game after the Coronation. The dramatic depart- ment initiated its new theatre with Broadway and English stars, and thrilled all playgoers with its all student production of The Man Who Came to Din- nerf' Five Drama majors made an exciting trip to New York to view the best plays of the season. 1949-195Q - The last and busiest year for those stu- dents now turned senior saw Doris Otterson elected queen during the impressive Viking Day Homecom- ing program. Senior, Allen Farley, student body president, worked with the Student Council for the betterment of the student government program. Verlyn Smith was elected President of the National LSAA. Bob Snook, director of the Theatre, opened another dramatic season with Carroll McComas, Broadway actress, in Arsenic and Old Lace. Foreign students and faculty members made the campus an interesting place. A Christmas party with a foreign theme made us appreciate them even more. Boe and Stavi g did it again with another musical. 1, , S53-'tit f ' 'Quays-'3 ' My ,f V- . , W lf, WILLIAM ABBOTT . . . Sioux LYNNE C. BAHNSON . . . In- FLOYD RALPH BASS Q Falls, S. D. . . Music . . With an air of mystery sur- rounding them the rising young journalists of Augus- tana, the Mirror staff, put the Mirror to bed each Friday and got her up in time for Mon- day morning's distribution. The air of mystery refers to Rorrim 37, the riddle which ran as a serial in the Mirror for week after week and was finally revealed to be only Mirror spelled backwards. The 37 tells the number of workers on the Mirror staff, but editor- in-chief, Bob Binger, wasn't positive he counted right. But whether the Mirror staff was blessed with 37 writers or more or less made no differ- ence in putting out a grand Augie school paper. Mirror covered the news and kept Augie well informed on her- self. Even some controversial letters to the editor crept in to add spice to the 1949-50 Mirror. Upper right . . . standing 1. to r ....
