Most of our nine hundred students are Lutheran, maintaining their denominational affiliation at one of the three local Lutheran churches. The friendly atmosphere of East Side Lutheran Church, at which Rev. H. R. Gregerson is pastor, makes every Augustana student feel welcome and at home there. Newly located, Our Savior's Lutheran Church is fast be- coming an important place for Sunday worship. Rev. H. M. Blegen is pastor of the church which is now situated at Twenty-eighth Street and Summit Avenue, right off the Augustana Campus. First Lutheran could well be called Augustana's church home. The organist, choir director, and members of the board are from the Augustana faculty. Students teach Sunday School, sing in the choir, and take active part in the youth organiza- tions of the church. Dr. I-l. J. Glenn, as president of the College Board of Directors, is intimately acquainted with Augustana students. l-le is a common figure on thecollege campus. Assisting him with church activities is Rev. C. J. Swanson. Q .M .,g,y,.,wV'.,, v an N L ' 'Q' V Q, , we sg' 6 Q A Q sts D 11' ' s As L sn- lx 3 Q 1 I .Nn,.1,l. . W . ' ' -'cv 1,5 mfs' ' O 000. . Be- low - - - Hugo Lutz, Profes- sor Guderyahn, BAND And the band played on! ln i947-48 the Augustana band was under the baton of Conductor Guderyahn and left-handed assistant conductor Hugo Lutz. The goal of the year was a new uniform for every member and a member in every uniform, therefore all activities were directed toward the acquisition of S3,000, which meant the realization of that goal. A--band carnival started the fund rolling upward. A series of concerts brought in more of the necessary finances. Of course the 53,000 wasn't all that the band concentrated on during the year l947-48. They gave musical support to the Vikings in football and basketball tussles, and kept up the morale of the students in the bleachers. Busses took them to out-of-town contests at Brookings and Sioux City. One of their greatest feats was getting up at 6:30 one September morning to give the footballers a rousing send-off on their joumeylto Washburn University at Topeka, Kansas. E DDA Before you read any further, meet the EDDA family which collaborated to produce the yearbook this year. The home of the 1948 EDDA was the Cottage basement and the family . !ell . . . First there were' the family heads, Frances Brager, Editor, and Allen Farley, assistant editor and business manager. Most important of the little EDDAS were the photographers, in this case, Jack Townsend and Roger Hanchen who were all over the campus and then some, recording great events on film. The rest of the EDDA kids were a lively bunch. Ambitious and ever-ready with 'copy and advice were Helen Schrader, Virginia Floren, Dorothy Pederson and Wes Sandvig, whose special pet was the sports section. Helen Bekke, Dale Jones, Arlyn Roe, Frances Hanson and Kay Abbey were here 'n there with more assists. That concludes the roll call . . . and now the EDDA family hopes you'll read on and chalk this up as a. great year .... book! At the helm during the first semester was Wes Sandvig. Mary Ode took over the editorship at semester time. Laurel Gray, former sports editor, got a new title, Associate editor, in January. To complete the cycle, Durand Young moved up a notch from sports writer to sports editor. Retaining their jobs were Harry Eidsness and Naomi Seim, business manager and religion editor respectively. So much for the editors. On down the masthead, lots ot little people worked in the background to make each week's dead- lines. Jack Townsend and Roger Hanchen handled the shooting assignments tphotographyl, and Kee DeBoer had charge of the circulation department. Columns titled Let's Put lt This Way, Nosin' Around, Round About, Off the Record, and Campus Personality had bylines crediting the material therein to Tom Kilian, Virg Sandvig, Bart Kull, Dick Struck, and Virginia Floren. Reporting the news from all corners of the campus were lots of people, for Augustana has lots of corners. Alphabetically, they were Helen Bekke, James Eisentrager, Ruth Herbst, Carolyn Hinderaker, Dolores Hinderaker, Lois Hoffman, Ramona Ode, Berthamay Ofstad, Phyllis Roti, Alva Scarbrough, Harlan Sever- son, Dorothy Simons, Joan Steinlicht, Rosalyn Westre, Pat Sorenson, Bob Binger, and Bill Linden. n-097 NE W PUBUCA TIONS' When I was young I wanted much, A bike, a doll, a dog ,....... First came the Augie Buzz Book of I947-48, under the direction and guidance of Bob Groth. lt contained the names, classifications, addresses and phone num- bers of all Augie students and like info about the faculty. Cal Warne helped Bob with the sales routines for the book, and AI Hopper drew the cover design. Not long after the Buzz Book's debut, the fall issue of Venture came off the press. Volume two was a spring edition. Venture was a literary magazine, conceived and edited by Dick Struck and containing poems and stories written by up-and- coming authors and poets. Bob Groth, business manager and Tom Sheeley, associate editor, were Editor Struck's right and left hand men. Others on the operating staff were Ernest Satter, assistant business managerg Professor Herbert Krause, literary advisorg and Dr. Edwin Gunberg, technical advisor. The editorial staff consisted of Tom Kilian, Lorna Pearson, Dolores Hinderaker, Dole Jones, Dick Moberly and Ruby Durham. Among the bylines in the Table of Contents could be found those of Jerrie Jones, Wayne Trimm, Marilyn Wollman, Evelyn Wickre, Donna Millard, Bobbe Swenson, Dick Stavig, Ken Berg and Cecil Schrader. These two new projects cast a commendable reflection on the progress and initiative of Augie's journalism students. K0lE Even the air waves at Augie were harnessed by an enterprising group of students who organized the Augustana campus radio station KGLE. Tom Kilian, station manager, started it, and the project soon grew to such large proportions that KOLE became a major activity, During the five and six hours of its broadcasting days, KOLE enlisted the services of many . . . Disc jockies topped the list with Bob Groth, Dick Struck, Helen Bekke, Lawrence Westerlund, Ole Bakke, Berthamay Ofstad and Arthur Utt on the roster. Regular announcers were Wes Sandvig ot the sports news, Bart Kull, Don Roberts and Verlyn Smith, Lorna Pearson, Joan Steinlicht, Ramona Ode and Julius Berger found and wrote the news. Manager Tom and the record players doubled as announcers. Jim Cooley, Grover Raustad, Fred Caldwell, Evert Seim, Allen Rasmussen and Neal Nelson handled the engineering end. Along with Tom Kilian on the administrative statt were secretary Phyllis Roti, business manager Lawrence Westerlund, continuity and traffic man Dick Struck and monitor Bob Huntley. Assistants in the sports broadcasting included Durand Young, Gene Johnson, Laurel Gray and Virg Sandvig. Religious activities were covered by Verlyn Smith, Laurel Gray, Francis Smith and Ray Melheim, Virginia Floren was in charge of special events assisted by Cay Cashman and Dorothy Pederson. And now, at the end of chapter l947-48, how much do you recall about what went on in each ot these groups? For instance . . . The Neuronians, headed by president Allen Farley, Vice-President Warren Day, Secre- tary-Treasurer Don Hanson and inter-society board member Don Larson, was the richest of the societies with S350 in the treasury at one time. They made their mint at the concession stand at the Coliseum which they took over during Viking basketball games. The sister society of the Neuronians, the Phi Rho's reorganized their club under the direction of officers Lavonne Ersland, President, Cecil Schrader, Vice-President, Bertha Mae Ofstad, Secretary-Treasurer, and l-lelen Schrader, inter-society board member. .President Ann Kvernes and fellow-officers Donna Lorentson, Valda Rogers, Eleanore London and l-lelen Kvinge lined the purse of the Alpha Sigma Chi's by selling food in Ladies' Hall. With the welcome sheckles, they had a party every third week. Joining their sister society in the roller skating, ice-skating, -and theater parties were the Kappa Theta Phi's, led by president Vernon Keszler, Vice-President Dick lvloberly, Treasurer Murray Johnson, Secretary Gene Loken and inter-society member Marvin Simonson. The Philo's also turned to business, the business of spending last year's financial surplus. With President Jean Nelson, Vice-President Bobbe Swenson, Secretary-Treasurer Phyllis Roti and inter society member Betty Spitznagel in the officer's chairs, they invested it in several parties at Homecoming, Christmas and in-between. Their brothers, the Webs, headed by Robert Mandsager, President, Wes Sandvig, Vice-Presi- dent, Keith Ellwein, Secretary-Treasurer and Newell Olson, inter-society board member, were in on the festivities. , The Glads bought sweaters, in a bright green, to commemorate the new year. President Ken Kessinger, Vice-President Harry Eidsness, Treasurer Luby Lee and the rest had plenty of chance to wear them, too, at the theater parties, banquets and card parties given for, by, and with themselves and sisters Adelphics. Dolores I-linderaker, President, Phyllis Lokken, Audrey Fossum, Lois Ulrickson and Lavonne Engebretson otficered the i947-48 Adelphics. Parties were the main item on the Demosthenians, Reorganization was another project executed by members and officers Jim Cooley, president, Grover Raustad, Vice-President, Tom Kilian, Secretary-Treasurer and Don Johnson, sergeant-at-arms. Discussing the topic of World Government, the team traveled to the southern and eastern coasts as well as many cities in the mid-west. ln December, Dorothy Pederson, Cay Cashman, Tom Kilian and Verlyn Smith journeyed to lowa State Teachers College for the Mid-west lnvitational Tournament. Cay Cashman placed first in the Extemporaneous Speaking divisiong and Dorothy Pederson was high point speaker for the total events of the tournament. The Red River Valley Tournament at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota saw the Augustana teams again matching wits with north-central schools. A post-war traveling spree took Dorothy Pederson, l-lelen Bekke, Tom Kilian, Verlyn Smith and speech head, Bob Snook on an extensive trip through the southern states. Highlighting the two-week trip was the Glendy-Burke lnter-collegiate Tournament at Tulane University, New Orleans. The Grand National Tournament at Fredricksburg, Virginia, saw the girl's team, Dorothy Ann Erickson and Gene Johnson going east while the men's team represented Augustana at the Little National Phi Kappa Delta Tourney at Fort Collins, Colorado. With a diet of statistics, Cord Meyer's quotes, earth shaking plans and Culbertson's books, Augie de- bators fully digested world government proposals. Next year it will be something different, but just as much interest and work will again take over. Seated around the table from left to right . . . PROGRAM HIGHIIGI-ITS Augustana was the recipient of much talent during l947-48, bot.. imported and home-grown. Imported talent first calls for mention of the Artist's Series which presented four shows throughout the year, On October 28, Miss Borghild Dahl, renowned author-lecturer and former Augustana English instructor, delivered a lecture on the topic of Talent and Opportunity. One week later, John Anglin, the popular Negro tenor, appeared in a concert on the gym stage and pre- Senled 0 DfOQram including Negro Spirituals, art songs and the well known Ombra Mai Fu by Handel. That same month, on the 20th, an organ recital at the First Lutheran Church, featured Dr. Frank Asper, famed' organist of the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah. The poet-organist was on his l6th national tour. ' The Blaisdell Trio, led by flutist Frances Blaisdell, presented their concert on February 4. The other two-thirds of the trio were Russian-born Alexander' Kouguell, cellist, and a promising young pianist, Thomas Richner. Every day programs were those presented in chapel each morn- ing from 9:l5 to 9145. Among the speakers who appeared in chapel exercises were South Dakota's Attorney-general Sigurd Anderson, several local pastors and Rev. Oscar Anderson who gave his series of sermons during Religious Emphasis Week. Miss Ruth O'Neil, WSSF representative, came in November to explain to Augie students the merits of the World Student Service Fund. Friday was reserved for the home-grown talent and was designated as Student Body Day. Luby Lee, Student Body President, presided each week. Probably the biggest Student Body days were given over to Bob Groth and his Student X and Hiking Viking contests, pat- terned after radio's Miss Hush and The Walking Man competition. The Student X riddle ended in, three weeks when Alva Scarbrough identified Student X as cheerleader LaVerne Kopperud. Sorry we can't tell you the identity of the Hiking Viking because, as the EDDA goes to press, it has not been guessed. Proceeds from the contests were donated to the WSSF drive. Some programs were musical ones with Lyle Lien and his band handling. the instruments. The group was later taken over by Luby Lee. Sklts from the pen of Virginia Floren recall such famous por- trayals as Dogwood, Gerry Lofgren, - Blondie, Bev Slieter, - third grader Leonard Boe and schoolma'am Betty Spitznagel. Q The presentation of various awards also became a part of Friday programs. January saw the awarding of tennis letters, football letters and sweaters. Footballers Jacque Schmiedt and Chuck Okey received official all-conference awards at a February meet- ing.
