Orientation week is an exciting ttme on campus, and the first plunge into cotlege tite tor the freshmen. The theme for orientation this year was One Step Closer. Each passtng day of Summer and every hour of orientation week brought the class of 1985 one step closer to embarking on a new phase of their lives. Opening convocation was on Thursday, September 3. Freshmen met their peer advisers and orientation groups and became invotved tn the round of questionairres. language and placement tests music auditions and thetr first taste ot registration on Saturday. Included tn the week was the Leaders talent show, the movie Breaking Away and Outdoor Education. whtch this year included a huge Earthbatl. Classes began on Tuesday. and the totlowing Sunday was the Freshman talent show. Notably absent from Ortentation 1981 was the freshman beanie and the beanie ratd. Lauded by some as the end of ttchttdish games and mourned by others as the passing of a traditton, the controversy continues. The beanie has been set aside in other years. and has been resurrected. Only the future can tell if this time it has truly met its end. The director of Orientatton 1981 was Dr. Nancy Huse and Co-Leaders were Nick Finan and Deb Morales; transter Co-Leaders were Shelby Ingram and Flick Jetfery; Outdoor Ed was led by George thhter and Jilt Foster. orientation week - 5

Resting on the banks of the Mississippi river since its founding in 1860, Augustana has grown and changed, yet remains steeped in tradition. Its aftiliation with the Lutheran Church of America. now more traditional than active. is reflected by the stained glass of Old Main and the spires of Ascension chapel. A sheltered nook in the Quad- Gities, Augustana give students a chance to prepare for the world before meeting it face to face. Emphasis at Augustana is on learning. and a broad range of courses is required. revealing its Liberat Arts tradition. The buildings mirror that tradition: stoic. solemn Waliberg Hall, the massive. modern student Union, classic and dominating Old Main, and the unique betl tower.
