Education, the fundamental reason for the existence of Augustana, the reason for the presence 01 every student and every faculty member. In truth, anything going beyond this is extra: college events 1riend5. sororities and fraternities. Sports. None are the backbone. the m Education, the academic side, is not limited to a grade, or a course, or even a major. The classes teach much more than a subject. Each student learns each day to think, to look beyond himself into the realm oi ideas and theory. He iearns to deal with pressure. deadlines and shifting priorities. Ideally this becomes a pursuit, a broadening of knowledge and the spirit, Some never reach that point. and cannot see beyond meeting requirements or cramming for an exam. The grade is king For most, however, there is a balance. The pressures of the moment are important, but the ideal still shines in the distance like a beacon. academia - 9

Augustana doesn't have a seminary anymore and even when it did. dating was a major part of on-campus social life. It all starts with the age old Augie tradition-that of the uTrue Augie Co-ed. A giri isn't really an Augie coeed, so holds the iegend. until she is kissed under the bell tower by an upperclassmant This old tradition may have been the ice- breaker tor many a romance. At any rate. it hasn't died out due to lack ct interest. For most students there are the casuai dates. movies and Whitey's shakes, and getting to know one another. But for some, pursuit of the opposite sex is more than an interest, it is a state oi mind. Always on the prowl. they seem to be looking for some eiusive ideal. And for those lucky few who happen to iind true love at Augustana. there is one last tradition: The sloughing oi the newly engaged male, a good-natured tatewell to the single iite. love. augustana style e 11
