America Welcomes New President ii And Freed Hostages January 20 proved to be on emotion-lilled day for all Americans - a day which witnessed the beginning of an era of national revival with the inauguration of a new president and the end of 0 AM-dey long captivity for the 52 American hostages. It Was 0 day when every citizen's patriotism pumped through his veins and made him once again proud to be an American. At the same time Ronald Wilson Reagan was placing his hand on on old W family Bible and being sworn in 05 the 40th President of the United States, the -' M 52 hostages were enduring their lost Iranian ordeal before boarding the Air . Algeria 727 bound for freedom as they were marched through c: gontlet of i cursing and kicking militants. As Reagan re-ignited hope in every American's heart and made him once ,: again believe in this country and its capacity for great deeds, the oIr-bound hostages crossed into freedom, heading for the Houori Boumedienne Airport in e Algiers, '3 From his stor-spangled sermon on the Hill. Reagan and First Lady Nancy headed for a day of parades. fireworks. and incu'ural bolls. And the ex- - hostages flew on to a military hospital in Wiesbaden. West Germany for doctoring 0nd decompressing. At Wiesbaden, they were greeted with chants of U.S,A.l U.S.A.! and the like. They were visited by Jimmy Carter, Reagan's citizen envoy. Carter was horrified to learn of the Iranians' cruel and inhumane treatment, including physical and mental abuse. mock firing squads. death threats. and wormy food. Upon hearing this some Americans wanted revenge by failing to unfreeze oil of the Iranian assets. But they soon realized that this would only serve to worsen matters. The ex-hostages celebrated their East night together in Wiesbaden with free-tlowing beer, champagne and lobsterl The next day. they were flown aboard Freedom One to New York to be reunited with their families. After spending two days in seclusion with their families at the West Point Militarty Academy. the 52 were flown to Washington for 0 public homecoming. They were greeted with c ticker-tope parade, thousands of cheering Americans waving flags in their honor, and a formal ceremony on the White House iuwn. ?WiDE WORLD PHOT i is World Events Assassinations Attempted On Reagan And Pope r They were American nighmares rerun: the assassination attempts of President Rancid Reagan and then of Pope John Paul II. It was a rainy day in March, President Reagan was speaking l to a banquet room of 3,500 AFLsCIO union delegates at the Washington Hilton Hotei. At the same time, John Hinckley. Jr. was composing a love letter to actress Jodie Foster, whom he had never met, In the letter. he explained that he was going to kili Reagan to gain her respect and love, He then headed for the Hilton, at which he was going to stand among the press waiting for Reagan. One hour later. Reagan emerged from the WP entrance. He raised his arm to wave at the press. and Hinckley opened fire. Reagan was struck by a builet which ricocheted off his limousine. It then puntured his left lung and came to rest only three inches from his heart. Press Secretary Jim Brady, Police t Officer Thomas Delahanty and Secret Service Agent Timothy McCarthy were all hit directly. The country became chaotic Reports fiashed on that Reagan was not shot. then he was; that Brady had died, but then he was holding his awn. Reagan's cabinet men rushed to the White House to make sure that the government continued to function fully and effectively. But through it all. President Reagan manged to keep his sense of humor intact. While being wheeled into the operating room, he told Nancy he tiforgot to duck, asked his aides who's minding the store, and auipped to his surgeons, I hope you're ail Republicans The morning after the surgery. Reagan was propped up in bed and ready to go on with business as usuai. He met with aides and signed bills from his hospital room. His main goal was to remain positive for the countryls sake. He repeated many times during his recovery, t'Winston Churchill said there i ,F mu is no more exhilarating feeling than being shot without result, 1 But then it happened again. only this time to Pope John Paul II. It was a warm May afternoon in St. Peter's Square. t1 Vatican City. The man who had become known as the people's Pope was waving and smiling to the crowd of 10,000. Four shots rang out. and blood stained his white vestments. The assailant: Mehmet Ali Agca, a 23-year oid Turkish hit man. John Paui feil to the floor at his jeep. He was wounded in the lower abdomen, the right forearm. and the index finger of his left hand. Two American women were also wounded in r the attacks The Pope was rushed to a hospital, given his iast rites, and then wheeled into surgery. He survived the operation, though. and remained in intensive care for the next few weeks. The prayers of millions were answered as Pope John Paul Ii recovered, And he has pubiiciv said that he is not afraid - it's what you might call one of the risks of the job. We are all in God's hands. and love is stronger than hate.
