Orientation Week Augustana greeted its freshmen this year, as in the past, with varied programs, games, and good times to help the newcomers get over the first feeiings of homesickness and to adjust to the changes of college life. Thursday, August 30, was the big day, as orientation week kicked off with the Opening Convocation in Centennial Hall. Foiiowing words from President Tredway and Dean Sundelius, the freshmen met for the first time with their orientation groups in Carver P.E. Center. The orientation leaders put their peers at ease and the distribution of beanies left the freshmen truly in the spirit of Augie tradition and beanie raids to come. A picnic on the Westerlin lawn set the stage for the evening activities which started off with the mandatory read- ing tests and ended with a bonfire at the Slough. The freshmen finally returned to their rooms and had a chance to get to know their roommates and neighbors. Friday morning put the freshmen into the swing of things with language proficiency tests first thing and music auditions all after- noon. Dinner that night at the faculty advisors' homes gave the freshmen one more chance at home cooking before settling down to a year of dorm food. The bonfire at the Slough was an opportunity to relax with new-inund friends. President Tredway welcomes a freshman to the 30- nanza Dinner at his home.
