2 Memoriam Gerald W. Freak 1958 - 1978 Jerry Freck: A Friend iTribute taken from the Dec . 7, 1977, Observer; written by Dave Wrath J In the early afternoon of Wednesday, November 16, the Augustana athletic dE- partment lost a friend, and this paper lost a reporter. jerry Freck, a 19-year old saph- omore from Mt. Prospect, Illinois, cal- lapsed and died from causes still unknown while playing raquethall. Jerry, who had been involved in athletics for most of his life, was deeply committed to the Viking athletic pmgram, He served as manager of the football team and had plans of assisting the track team this spring. Last fall Jerry was given the most inspirational player award, This honor had previously been reserved for senior players, but Freck's hard work, determi- natiom and hustle made him the hands- down choice. In his TriernaryI the trophy has been lenamed V 1 he Jerry Freak Me- morial Inspirational Award. Given the nature of his sudden death. which sent shock waves through the Augus- tana community. it would be easy to dwell on how he died. instead, I believe we should look at the way he lived. For those of us who knew him, jerry was a joy to be around. He always did much more than his share of the work; anyone associated with the football team can attest to than His work on the Observer was much appreciat- ed, and his skills in journalism will be missed, Ben Newcomb. the icutball coach with whom jerry did so much work summed up his manager this way: Jerry Freak was someone who gave 1005'r of himself, 1005.- of the time. He had pride in his work. the patience to stick with it, and the enthusi- am to make it 33.1 seem fun. As a close friend, Jerry was one of a kind. He was, as Newcomb stated. always giving his all. His ties with the football team went so deep, that even as a man- ager, he took defeat hard. Sports Informa- tion Director jim McGrath said, I've been here seven years and if I'm here an- other 75, I'll probably never see another like Jerry Frecki To his family, deepest sympathy is uf- Eered. and for all of you who never got the chance to meet Jerry. you missed a truly great human being. jerry will be missed. remembered, and treasured by all of us who were lucky enough to know him. 1:
