BEHIND THE SHADOW Do you remember the little verse we learned as children during the first days of school: I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me, And what can he the use of him is more than I can seem? And the picture books we read showed a little boy or girl looking around in puzzlement? Well, Robert Louis Stevenson never gave us the answer as to our shadowis use, and we go on into adolescence and adulthood, our shadow always following and mocking our attempt either to escape or to explain. Even wiser men have wondered at the shadows that seem to be a part of us. Long ago one 0F the wisest of thinkers compared our life to that of people in a cave who in the light of a fire see the shadows of each oLher 011 the wall. In this shadowy way Plato tried to say that all we see and know is shadow. And from the shadow we guess the form and nature of what we see and hear and touch. We hear the echOe we surmise the origin of the sound. We see the expression on our friendis faceiwe conclude what he is thinking. We touch the things of earthiand picture what it is we feel. Do our senses only hold converse with shadows? But even so, it is through the shadow we form our images and grasp anything at all. Do I begin to see the use of him? College fills our mind with images, with echoes, with memories, with vague glimpses of reality beyond our vision, our reach. If in the darkness we see figures on the walls of the mind it is because somewhere there is light. For there are no shadows where all is dark. If we discern the light, even the light that is in us. we can make, our way though the path he dark. And ahead, even far ahead, is the dawn, where the shadows shall pass away and instead of seeing, as in a mirror, dim shadows only, we may behold truth, face to face.
