DEBATERS MAINTAIN NATIONAL REPUTATION Angie's debate program takes Prof Holcomb and his squad into competitioh with colleges and universities from all over the country. Tourna- ments are the main business of the year, but work. on the national debate question begins long before the olhcial season opens. Squad meetings, individ- ual 'lget-togethersll with 'lProf, and library te- seatch help to build the case that each team will use. The first tournament this year was at Bradley University. It was followed by the Purdue Invita- tional where Augie was one of sixteen schools chosen to attend. Then in January 3. bus-load of debaters invaded the Normal Tournament. Later, teams uavelled north to St. Paul, Minnesota and to Northwestern. At the State tournament, Profs coaching brought his teams to hrs: place in the men's division and second in the women's. The high point of the year came when Augiels top team, Arnie Lack and Hollis Hegg, qualified for the West Point National, making Augustana the only school to enter the tournament every season since its beginning six years ago. More memorable to the debaters than the wins and losses was the fun that accompanied the trips -hurried departures from. W. 13,, tense tourna- ment schedules, meeting familiar teams from other schools. Debating wasn't all competitive either. Programs for clubs all over the Tri-Cities pro- vided audience situations as well.

AUGIE SPEECH CLINIC BRINGS STATE-WIDE RECOGNITION Augustana's speech clinic began in 1935 on a small scale and has grown since into an im- portant part of the school's program. What was at mst a plan of Private lessons has be- come a full-size speech and hearing center. Angie's speech correction students spend most of their time with the children in the Saturday workshop. Here training is oHered for those with speaking and auditory difficulties. Each .. a child enrolled in the clinic is given two lesson periods and spends the remaining time on handicrafts. There is also provision for physio- therapy in cases where it is needed. Study in the rehabilitation center or in the summer workshop is required for Augieis speech correction majors, but the clinic is most important for the chance of a normal life it gives to handicapped children. The percentage of actors and actresses on campus runs high, making Augustana's chapter of Alpha Psi Omega, national dramatic: fraternity, the largest in the na- tion. Try-outs for the three annual Plays are open to any student, and hidden talent is constantly being uncovered. Dramatic ability is not really necessary, though, either for entrance into Alpha Psi or for Participation in Augieirx productions. A big job falls to the crews who work before opening night or behind the scenes. Com- petition is keen, even for these less glor- iouf' positions, and before notices are posted, almost every one is tilled. Membership in Alpha Psi isnlt all work, though. When the play is over, members and uneophytes gather in the auditorium for their traditional party. Here the 3:15 Pressed talents of the stage crew often come out in a skit 0r take-off on the play. Then there are the initiations, where neo- phytes are put through their paces. A look at Angie's dramatic organization will prove that the campus is truly stage- consclous.
