l SCENES IN THE YEAR'S DRAMA As the curtain opens at each scene of a play a background appears-a room, a countryside, a forest-against which the story unfolds. The play's the thing, but into our memories are woven the images of the place as well as the player. A year at Augustana unfolds in our recollections, and reveals the scenes amid which the story of youth develops. I cannot here in a few words sketch those scenes, but I suggest that it may be possible to recall part of the drama by references to certain doorways on the campus. There's the entrance to Old Main, and just inside the door of the Director of Admissions. What are the dreams and anticipations of the Freshman as he first goes through those doors? There's the portal to Denkmann Library, and the doors that open into the Reading Room. Are not these symbolic of the entrance to long paths of learning that stretch to infinite horizons? Here's the door into the gymnasium with all its scenes of excitement at basketball games and of merriment at school parties. The doorway of Wallberg opens into mysterious chambers of ever more mysterious discoveries of the secrets of the physical universe. The doors of Andreen Hall- never shut, and the doors of the Women's Building that seem to close too soon for the couple that can't seem to part. The many doors of the Music Building, from whose rooms come a variety of sounds each proclaiming a different ambition. The door of Chapel, inviting to silence and meditation. Through these doorways Hows a constant stream of youth. Now it moves here, now there. Each time the door is entered it admits a young man or woman a little taller in intellectual stature than on the former occasion. Life moves, and grows, and unfolds, and develops, and the doors of opportunity open and close. Then one June day-the day of graduation-the doors of Augustana behold the departing throng, as it enters the door of the future which leads to all the various walks which graduates take in their pursuit of a career. Augustana - a portal to the future! These many doorways on Augustana's campus open for an eager, living, throbbing, stream of youth. Through these doors they go-Augustana men and women-out into the world, happier, we believe, more useful, more meaningful in their minds and hearts, because of what they experienced in the scenes of the drama that is college at Augustana. - CONRAD BERGENDOFF
