1946-47 may well turn out to be the beginning of a new era in American education. Something else happened than a mere return to college on the part of a large number of students whose education had been inter- rupted by the war. The new thing in college education which came to View in l946 was the breaking down of barriers which formerly had surrounded the American campus. With- in the year there was a crashing of the gates of colleges and universities by a whole portion of the population which before had not had financial means. From hun- dreds of thousands the campus enrollments grew to millions. The significance of this movement lies in the faith that American youth have in college education. American young men and women want to train themselves for better jobs and fuller living. To the schools of the nation this poses the question-can education, college educa- tion, give what these youth are seeking? Augustana has sought to meet this condition by ex- panding its facilities, but ever giving thought to the problem of making instruction meaningful for the pur- poses of this generation. A healthy, throbbing life has pulsated through the halls of the campus, and a con- stant optimism has supported our faith in the power of Christian youth to meet the tasks of this age hopefully and victoriously.
