HANSEN EDITOR JOHN M. TELLEEN BUSINESS MANAGER 714 Dczfczzfirfu In the tragic death of Professor Carl Fryxell, Augustana has lost one of its most valued and highly esteemed teachers. Although his subject was one that dealt with material problems-business and economics, his out- look on life was anything but materialistic. By his no- bility of character, his unquestioned integrity and his forthright spirit, he wielded a strong and formative in- fluence in his classroom and on the campus which has left an indelible impress on the lives of students as well as his colleagues. But Carl Fryxell was something more than a school- man. He took an active interest in the problems of his communityland gave unstintingly of his time in public service. His membership on the Board of Education of Moline may be cited as an example of such service. Likewise, he revealed a genuine interest in the work of his local church, as Well as in the church at large. Al- ways he was looked upon by his fellows as a man who could be depended upon as being faithful in the least and who would give his best. During World War Il, when a military training unit on the campus brought with it many complex problems, it was to Carl Fryxell that the administration turned to assume responsibility for all financial relationships with the government. The Rockety-I is truly grateful for the years of efficient and conscientious service that Carl Fryxell rendered to its annual publication as financial advisor. It is to him that we dedicate this book. A X K, rx n fx af- :ff mm UE an-ss -.Q Q .x 1 as as ms ss m gym -an sa n new :mg 5- N A . fs-,fs w-1. my, If xi mms ' nam- M sms ssaiwm wi M B W sw 5. Magnusson, for forty years an esteemed and brilliant member of the Augustana Col- lege faculty. A thorough scholar and a beloved teach- er, Dr. Magnusson has left behind him a rich legacy in the lives of the many students who came under his in- fluence. We think also of the invaluable contribution which he has made to the growth and progress of Aug- ustana. lt is primarily through his efforts that the nat- ural sciences have come to occupy so large a place in the curriculum and have won for our college the rec- ognition and respect of the scientific world. We cherish the memory of Dr. Magnusson, however, not only as a teacher and a scientist, but equally as much as a friend. His kind and genial personality, as well as his manly qualities will be long remembered by those who came to know him intimately. w B 1-fm my s : n - as Q vw ms as .fam 555522 Q. Something else happened than a mere return to college on the part of a large number of students whose education had been inter- rupted by the war. The new thing in college education which came to View in l946 was the breaking down of barriers which formerly had surrounded the American campus. With- in the year there was a crashing of the gates of colleges and universities by a whole portion of the population which before had not had financial means. From hun- dreds of thousands the campus enrollments grew to millions. The significance of this movement lies in the faith that American youth have in college education. American young men and women want to train themselves for better jobs and fuller living. To the schools of the nation this poses the question-can education, college educa- tion, give what these youth are seeking? Augustana has sought to meet this condition by ex- panding its facilities, but ever giving thought to the problem of making instruction meaningful for the pur- poses of this generation. A healthy, throbbing life has pulsated through the halls of the campus, and a con- stant optimism has supported our faith in the power of Christian youth to meet the tasks of this age hopefully and victoriously. Carlsontlzszeld Row This year the renowned Augustana choir set' out on April 13 for the most extensive tour since before the War, traveling ior two weeks through Indiana, Michigan, Wiscon- sin and Illinois. The group's most notable concert was given on May 20 at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. Under the inspiring leadership oi Mr. Henry Veld and associate conductor and ac- companist, Mr. Brynoli Lundholm, the choir rendered an outstanding interpretation of some of the greatest works in choral litera- ture. Their presentations were always ap- preciated by the many people who enjoy good music. Throughout the year the choir has given renditions to numerous organizations here in the Tri-cities, and their year's program was cluminated at the home concert in the spring. ctefq Z C ry'T'e's:f1'lff'fom. ILLINOIS Department of Public Relations C -Mwoin Sannmus, Director Dear Prospective Student: By the time you have come to this page of the Rockety-I, you have formed some rather definite impressions of Augustana. I'm sure they have been favorable. For eighty-seven years, thousands of young people have learned to think of Augustana as Alma Mater. Every day many ways are discovered in which the loyalty of these Augieites is expressed and we are cheered by the prospects for the institution's continued growth and progress. It may seem peculiar, in view of the overcrowding that exists at most colleges and universities, that the hope should be expressed that additional young peo- ple will seek admission to the institution. Especially should that be true when it is necessary for us to deny admission each year to hundreds of eager high school graduates. The fact is, however, that we are just as eager now as ever that the quality of Augustana's student body shall be the highest. Our fine students are a source of considerable pride, and we invite prospec- tive applicants with the greatest potentialities to avail themselves of Augustana's opportunities. Our enrollment has more than doubled in the past five years. we anticipated this growth and have provided new laboratory and classroom facilities. Ample housing has been secured for those students we agreed to accept. Competent teachers were added to the faculty. We are not ceasing, however, to strive for even finer educational facilities. The pictures on the opposite page indicate a part of the development program now under way. A new dormitory for women, a memorial chapel, and several buildings which cannot yet be announced, are a part of the advantages future students will enjoy. The faculty too, is keeping pace by providing modern, flexible curricula. Augustana is definitely on the march. Its extra-curricular program in athle- tics, music, forensics, and social life is keeping step with academic enrich- ment and the development of the institution's physical plant. At the core of Augustana's program is a sincere purpose to make the Christian philosophy of life dominant in teaching and living. It is a pleasure to invite you to give serious consideration to making Augustana your future Alma Mater. Sincerely yours, Q45 ' .ff , . cfs? I v M Q Q B was Q an my J -i B 1.
