It acts as the governing influence in the conduct of social activities, and it is doing a most eHicicnt work. In a student body the size of Angustnnu, it is necessary to have some central organizatinn which is given the power to exercise control over sucial activities, that they might find their proper place In student life. Only too often in our colleges and universities the social phase of the school activities is allowed to overshadow, and even to overthrow completely, the scholastic, with the natural consequences. To guard against any such condition zit Augustunu, this Board of Control was organized, and it is by this Board only that any permissions for social functiuns are granted. In this way the correct relationship, between the snciul and the scholastic sides of schnol life, is brought about, and a balance of play and work is struck which proves beneficial to .111. ml; Phi Omega phi Gamma Alpha Beta Pi Upsilon Gamma Omicron Sigma Omicron Omega Nu Omega Our Hundred J-Tfu-vau M. There were. games with Wabash, one uf the strongest teams in the country, and Milii kin champions of the I. I. A. Cuiin fact not an easy game an the list. Coach SwetL he'rg called out the grid candidates early in September. More than thirty men under the leadership of Capt. HCllllBkw Larson, respondad to the call. There was :1 guod nucleus of veterans: and a good supply of new material. After two weeks nf practice, the untried Augie machine embarked fur Cruww fordsvillc to battle the rcdouhtnble 'iLittlc Giants. To use the expression of one who played, iiIt was worse than any battle in the Great KVnr! Augie fought us all Augie teams fight. The 6nd of the game found XVnhash victorious, 7e0. Con- sidcring the strength of the Big Scarlet eieven, the low score aroused the hopes for :1 winning team to a high pitch. The men came out of the Wabash game in :1 battered condition, but luckily the next Saturday was an open date. TIN: two weeks luy-otfH served to perfect team? play In the next encmmter, Angustmm easily downed Parsons. Nearly every man on the squad had :1 chance to do his bit. The following weekecnd promised to be an interesting one. Illinois W'csleyun was going ulike a house on fire . Huussler, Ziuscr and Company had just disposed of Knox and were in readiness to serve Augie the same way. Two touch-downs decided the day, and Augustanu put across both of them. It is seldom that 3 Homecoming has such a setting as in 1921. The visiting team was Miilikin. Erieson Field could not take care of the large crowd, so the game was shifted in Duughls Park, This was a gorgeous setting, but victory was not tn be ours. The jinx was with us again. The Big Blue. machine was the best team that day. Augustnnn Came, saw, and conquered, all in a nice green cowipnsture. M0117 mnuth's football field was a sea of mudJ hence the changed location. But it made no difference. The buys swam and slipped thru the mud for a 1977 win. St. Ambmse came to Duuglas Park determined to beeome the Tri-City Collegiate champions. If. was a great game, hotly contested to the end. The Augie back- Iield worked like a elock-work. Two toueh-downs represented the superiority of the Swedes over the Saints. Bradley honored Augustana by selecting the Blue and Gohi :15 their Home- coming Day attraction Bradley Augustana games are the cleanest and hurdesb fought game of the year. Bradley had a good team and. won a well-eamed victory. Old Man Winter won the last game at the year. Four inches of snow made it impossible for Augustsna to pry nlf lhe lidH in gridiron relations with Eureka. CINIL'II chdberg, Captain Larson, and the men arc to be congratulated upon their splendid showing. The men fought hard every minute, even when discouraged by misfortune and injury They were a credit tn Augustana. Captain Wnllic Swanson, Gus Andrew, Mal Lundccu .vmd Cullie Rydholm, nll letter men, served as n strong nucleus around which to build the team. Couch Swedharg's first glimpse of those fighting fur positions convinced him that same exceptionally good material was on hand, and he found it extremely difficult to weed down his squad to the customary twelve 01' fourteen men. After a careful process of Elimination however, Ole Jnhnson. Hunk Rnscncranz, Connie Amman, Bill Dwyer, Ken Conraj', Mei Samuelson. Cullic livilsou and Dick Van Alstyne still remained on the field of lmttlc to answer present at the roll call with the letter men. This was W'ulliels last year on the basketball team. He was a fighter from the word go , and his services will be sorely missed. His ability to inject his nnever say die fighting spirit into the other members of the team resulted in no small number uf victories for Augustana. The return game with Armour pmvcd to be am easy one for the visiting crew, the Engineers capping the event, IOtI. Augie was helpless hcfurc the deceptive offer- ings uf Gifbertson the pitching ace of the Chicagoans, and rendered matters worse by losing the ball at crucial moments while on the field. Augie split cvcn in the return matches with Lomth and Monmouth, defeating the former 6-71, and taking the short end of a GtO score from the Maple City nine. Peterson, Captain and reliable backstop, was placed on the hospital list for thn remainder of the scasun in the latter game, due to an injury to his hand. This necessitated a changed lineup, and simplified matters for Monmouth. The final game of the season, played on the home field with Brndlcy, was decisively lost to our slugging visitnrs, 8-1. Inability to hit, and :1 tendency on the part of Augustana to score in the error column, made it easy for the Pcnrimis. W'e feel that during the past year excellent progress has been made toward the: real .ntinn of this aim. The department has grown nut only in numbers. but in quality of the. work :13 well. Then: are over eighty-tivc girls enrolled in the Physicnl Education Department, including the: Freshman and Sophomores, of whom the work is required, and for which work college credit is mm- given. The greatest part at the success in this work has been due to the instructrcss, Miss Dorothy Rogers: who has given her best etTurts and inspirations to the department. Credit must also be given to Miss Doris Oline: the girls' representative on the Augustuna Athletic Bunrd of Control, and to the girls uf the studcnt bndy interested in the work, Over one hundred and twcnty-five, girls of the college came out for the sensnns' sports. Much etEcicnt work was done in the fall in hockey. tennis, hiking. rhythmic gymnastics, and swimming, the hitter being: required of Freshmen and Sophnmures. Swimming was an outstanding feature at Augustmm during the year. A class in Red Cross Life Saving was organzied and several passed the required tests. The work during the winter months included Swedish gymnastics, apparatus work, .1 course in graded games, and basketball, in addition to the swimming. which was elective during this term. Much enthusiasm and zeal wns Shawn in basketball. Each of the four cln. es in College wus represented by 3 team. A tournament wt played, with the following results: The Sophomores won over the Freshmen by :1 score of 23-13, while the Juniors defeated the Seniors, IZhIO. In the final grime, which was hard fought and full of real basketball thrilis, the second year team beat the Juniors for the championship of the College classes, 10--1. Anuther interesting feature of the basketball season was the curtainirniser games which the Girls, Varsity played for the regular College games. Y. W. C. A. teams of Ruck Island and Melina furnished the opposition. The Spring seasun has turned the attention of many of the girls to the tennis courts. No less popular are hiking, lmsehnll games, mid the required swimming, and gymnasium work. that Augustuna has needed for a long time is an Athletic Association for the giris. After :1 year's hard work and agitatiun, the girls are finally organized intu the Augustunu Girls' Athletic Association. The aim of this Association is to amuse and cultivate interest in Girls' Athletics. We have nnly begun. but the start has been made and more and mum: the A. G. A. Through it have come many of the engineering ideas that have made this an electrical America. The story of electrical development begins in the Ruearch Laboratories. Here the ruling spirit is one of know- Iedghtruthhrathcr than immediat: practical results. In this manner are established new theorieahtools for fu- ture use-which sooner or later find ready application. The grant industries that clustar around Niagara Falls, the electricaily driven battle ships, the trolley cars and electrified railways that carry millnns. the household conveniences that have relieved women of drudgery, the labor- saving electrical tools of factories, all owe their existence,'partly at least, to th: cu-ordinated efforts cf the thousands who daily stream through this gateway.
