Dr Udden was born in Uddalm, Lekhsa parish, Vistergatland, Sweden, March 19, 1859' In 1861 his parents emigrated to Amerira and sewed in Carver county, Minnesota. Here he receiver! his early education. Enrolling in the third class of Augustana academy in 1876, he gradlr aled from the collegiate department in 1881. The next seven years he taught aL Bethany college, pursuing post graduate studie: in natural history during vacations. In 1888 he accepted the position as pro- fessor of geology and natural history at Augustana ccllege, which jmsuion he held till the spring of 1911 when he accepted a call to hecome chief genlcgistJ Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology. Texas university, where he is now located. Dr. L'dden has fI'DTII lime to time been connected with the geologicai survey of Illinois and Iowa, the United States geological survey, anti the Texas mineral survey In 1906 he was engaged as geologist on the Illinois Geographical survey. Some important invesugmians hearing on wind as a geological agent have been made by Dr. L'Ilden. He has published a number of papers on this subject: Erosion, Transportation and Sedimentation Performed by the Atmosphere, Dust and Sandstorms in the West,u Loess as a Land Deposit, and tiThe Mechanical Composition of Wind Deposits. A number or other importanL scientiflc papers have appeared in scien- tific journals. He IS a recognized authority on geology the whole country over and is one of the greatest Swedisermerican scientists in this country. Dr. rdden is a member of the Davenport Academy of Science. the Iowa Academy of Science and the National Geographical society, and is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
