There are people who, by paying a great price and by traveling alone the road of pain and suffering become the in- visible guardians and inspirations of their loved ones and their friends . . . Miss Florence or, as we more affectionately know her, “Mother Mac,” has been our invisible guardian for the past twenty-nine years at Augusta. Those years have passed quickly for her. However as they are to us, so they are to her the hap- piest years of her life and of ours. Thus it is a great privilege to the staff of the 1945 RECALL to dedicate this edition of the yearbook to “MOTHER MAC The present history of Augusta, as it is now being written, will place her name among those of the great immortals. To know her is to love her, knowing her is to live the history of A.M.A. Words cannot express our love and affection for this wonderful lady that fate so kindly sent to us. May her future years be as full of the beautiful things of life as they have been in the past. “Mother” all of us love you. AUGUSTA MILITARY ACA DEMY | FOREWORD We, the Staff of the RECALL for the year 1945, have, to the best of our ability, endeavored to prepare an Annual that we sincerely hope will serve as a true and impartial chronicle of the events of the school year, and will be the means, | in later years, of recalling to memory the | faces of our friends now so well known to us all. J Don Bazemore, Taylor Woody, and Jesse Mohler were chosen on the all state Military Team. Don Bazemore was also chosen the outstanding player in the state. Bobby Johnson, Clint Steele, Spurgeon McDade, Joe DiBello made honorable mention in the All-State Military Team. The season’s record stands: three games won, two lost, and two tied. The military score was: won two, lost none, and tied two. Monogram winners were: Long, R.; Woody; Crosby; Blackley; Chipley ; Stanley, L.: Stanley, J.; McDade; Steele; Eddy; Gruber; Bazemore; Mohler; Lingerfelt; Burton; Field, H.; Johnson; DiBello; Seward; Brown, D.; Stone; Koellmer ; Powell, G.; Litten; Smith, R. Due to the fact that this was their first game of the season with only two weeks of practice under their beits, the final score was tied | 6-6. With a few more practices and experience to their credit they tackled Lee | High Varsity of Staunton. The Jay-Vees started with а bang and were leading 12-6 when in the last few minutes of the game on а bad pass from center, A.M.A. lost the ball and Lee High went over for a touchdown. The extra point was good and the Jay-Vees lost the game by the score of 13-12. In this game, however, the Jay-Vees showed their fine coaching and really out-played their opponents. After this game A.M.A. suffered a run of bad luck during which they dropped two games to Waynesboro and Fishburne Jay-Vees by the scores of 13-12 and 12-6, respect- ively. Undaunted by these losses the Jay-Vees returned in a blaze of glory to beat Waynesboro in a game filled with many thrills, by the score of 31-6. Con- fident of themselves, they next took on Fishburne in a return game and walked away with anot her victory 12-6, This game ended their season and we are con- fident that from this year’s squad of Jay-Vees, our next year’s Varsity will draw many stars. Much credit is due to Captain Eastham for his fine coaching and to the members of the squad for their whole-hearted cooperation. The following men were awarded much deserved minor monograms: Heizer, Nicklas, Neff, Pitts, Greiser, Lemmon, Harris, Bowie, Richardson, J., Spilman, and DeJarnette. Varsity Basketball Team The Waleskites of Augusta started the season slow by losing to E.R.C. of Lexington, Va., 54-32, and to Greenbrier 44-23. Displaying an improved brand of ball Augusta defeated Massanutten 35-27, and Hargrove 47-24, and losing to Randolph-Macon 42-30 in a bitter struggle. Traveling to Fishburne the Waleskites defeated a small but tough foe 41-21, and then traveling to Greenbrier to lose 61-27. Here the Blue and White had a recess due to G. I. and when play resumed A.M.A. defeated Fork Union 49-27 at F.U.M.A.; Clifton Forge 52-38; Fork Union 51-45; Fishburne 48-40 in a game marked with thrills and chills which went into three extra periods. Bob Chipley (captain) led the team, scoring with 235 points and Koellmer followed with 165 points. The season’s standing was as follows: won nine, lost four for an average of (692, and in the military meets: won seven, lost one, for an average of ‚875. Major Monograms were awarded to the following: Koellmer, Steele, Chipley, Johnson, Bazemore, Gliboff, Thompson, Е., Nelson, Gruber, and Heizer. Minors were issued to: Sanders, W., Barnes, Henery, May, Henry P., and Burton, N. DENEN =. __ in ii ——— Fencing Team Augusta kept up with its wonderful record this past year by remaining undefeated among prep schools. In the opening meet with Fork Union, our foils- men easily defeated their opponents. The next meet was with Bambridge Naval Station, in which our swordsmen met three Olympic Champions who proved our downfall. Wasco was our only shining light when he won his match 5-3. This being our first exhibition of our team in epee and sabre, we did remarkably well. Brown gaining one point against arsons, the Olympic Champ, while Moerschell lost by a 3-5 score to his ехрегі- enced opponent. On the return trip from Baltimore, A.M.A. met and defeated the champions of Baltimore, Baltimore City College. Jackie Field and Wasco took honors in this meet. The next meet was with Navy, which we lost 19-8, In the foil, Wasco again topped his teammates, winning two, while Field and Thomas won one each. In the epee, Wong starred, assisted by Mandes. In the sabre, Caudill was our only light when he won the sole bout in this weapon. In the final meets of the season, Fork Union was again met and defeated. In the last meets, many new men were used for the first time, thus giving them needed experience for next year’s longer and more difficult schedule. Through the season, Wasco was the outstanding fencer, with Field a close second, Back Row—Rose, Smith, M. C., Wong, J. Middle Row—Jester, Mgr., Thomas, F. F., Lever, Neff, Richardson, Lane, Hope, Burden Swimming The Swimming Team of Augusta Military Academy has won the title of State Champions. This notice recently appeared in the newspaper. This was inevitable, as our team has been breaking and setting new records all year. In its opening meet A.M.A. defeated Fishburne 37-29, Our undefeated free- style relay team of: Neff, Coleman, Shutte, and Venzer turned in a first, as did Venzer in the 50 yard free-style, and Coleman in the 220. In its second meet A.M.A. was downed by the Army Plebes 45-21, but again Venzer won in the 50 yard free-style, and another first was our 200 yard relay of Neff, Schutte, Coleman and Venzer. Again against more experienced team A.M.A. lost to the Navy 42- 24. Schutte, and Venzer in the 200 yard relay also took а first, with Coleman and Neff. Schutte came in from behind to win the 100 yard free-style. A.M.A.'s tank- men next downed R.M.A. 41-25 with Schutte setting a new 220 yard pool record, and also the relay team broke the existing pool record. F.M.S. bowed to A.M.A. 46-20 and Schutte again set a new 100 yard free-style record, while the relay team broke its own record. Wrestling Team A new outlook has been taken on this sport this year, The present has been forgotten and everything was done with the future in mind. Thus despite a hard schedule, an enviable record has been made. The opening meet with Woodberry Forest saw our team go down before an experiencd outfit. Woody and Hardin Field were the stars in this meet, with Woody forcing his man to two extra periods before succumbing to a decision; Field going the limit and Mohler holding his man until the last fifteen seconds. The next meet was with Navy, Naturally our opponents were better men but we have given them many a surprise. Tommy Tompkins and Mayer were out- standing when they held out until the last twenty seconds of their bouts before being pinned. The team as a whole put up a great fight befrore yielding to their superiors. Т е next meet was V.S.D.D. (the same team they had last year), which we won 30-10. The meet was not as lopsided as the score indicates. Woody, Callahan, Tompkins, Mayer, and DeJarnette made points for Augusta. Т е return meet with Woodberry saw our men forcing them to the limit in almost every bout and holding them to three falls. Tommy Tompkins and DeJarnette won a draw and a decision respectively. Practice kept on after the season was finished and this predicts a great team in this great sport for next year. Capt. Lucas and Major Hoover along with Cadets Kauffman and Field, H., deserve a lot of praise for the wonderful work they accomplished this year. jack Row— Melchor, Mohler, T. Woody, DeJarnette, H. They lost by a narrow margin of 93 points with the final score of 1354 to 1261. Bryson was high scorer for A.M.A. with 242 out of a possible 300. Their second match was at Massanutten Military Academy. Our riflemen won with the final score 1221 to 1219. Lea was high score man for Augusta with а 252! In a three-way match at Fishburne M.S., our riflemen placed last with a score of 1946. F.M.S. led with a score of 1720. M.M.A. placed second with а final score of 1660. For A.M.A., Lea was high scorer with 349 out of a possible 400. Their next meet was the state meet, held at Fishburne. Staunton Military Academy led with a score of 1301. Fishburne placed second with 1294, and A.M.A. placed third with 1242. Their next match is with M.M.A. here on our range. We are sure that our riflemen will make а good showing. In the National Small Bore Match held December 31, they place fifth out of about 320 schools. In the second stage on January 31, we placed sixth. This year the team has done very well. We congratulate it and wish the following team lots of luck. Вохі а Augusta’s mittmen turned in a very disappointing schedule on paper, but actually there were some wonderful fights put up by our boys. In the first boxing meet of the season, a very much more experienced Miller School team beat us 8-2. Lingerfelt came through with a win, while Thornton and Crosby gave us a draw. The second match again with Miller School, and after a hard fight, we again lost, 8% to 1%. Crosby, the Captain of the team, won his bout and Reynolds earned a tie. The third match was with the Army Plebes, and we lost that one 7-1. Crosby was the only one who won his bout. In the last bout of the season, we lost to Fairfax High School 6-2. Crosby and Lingerfelt won their bouts. As it has been said, the schedule is disappointing on paper, but in the actual fights you could see that the boys of Augusta were giving everything they had, and a little more for Augusta. Reporter MRS. DON M. WILLIAMS “The Bayonet” The Bayonet, our school paper, has published fifteen copies of news, sports, social life, quadrangle quirps, and whatever was of interest to the corps. The Staff has had but one idea, and that was to produce a paper far more superior than ever before attempted, despite the fact that only half of the Corps sub- scribed to it. However, its readers have nick-named it the Cadet’s dearest friend. A new character has been created by The Bayonet and has gained fame all over barracks, known to the cadets as Stubbs Parker. This year he was carried farther into trouble by Cadet McKee, who writes it. So to the oncoming cadets we hope that The Bayonet will exist in their midst as it has in ours. BAYONET STAFF БЕС СС нын STAFF The Recall Tue RECALL is probably the only thing that an A.M.A. alumnus will have to carry him back in his memories to the days of his cadetship. It is the authoritative presentation of the different phases of his school life and classmates. Our goal has been to present to the 1944-45 Corps an annual that will stand as an all-time high for bringing back the memories of Augusta. Our staff, with the exception of a few, was chosen from inexperienced men, but by their effort and devotion to work, plus the able supervision of Major Hoover, they present an annual that will be a tribute to them all. When J. D. White returned to school, we found a man who successfully handled all our financial worries. On the shoulders of Jimmy Pigg and Paul Moerschell fell the main burden of the work. Especial mention must be given to Bill Jones for his fine photographic work and to his assistant, Pete Cordero. The work of our artist, Frank Bryson, speaks for itself. Brewer AUGUSTA MILITARY ACADEMY Class Prophecy Here I am again, back at the old A.M.A. campus. I see that many of the graduating class of 45 are here for Finals. It seems that the class of ’55 is very large. It’s swell looking over the old gang all together. Many of them have the memories of war on their minds, but they are as cheerful as ever. You would never know the old Clay Bowl, as it is now one of the best stadiums of its size on the East Coast. This product was largely made possible by the Class of 45, whose donations averaged close to $500 apiece. Litten, who generally contributes twenty-five cents, has his name engraved in large letters on its side. Say, who is that tall, lanky fellow strolling toward me? It’s Will Finney, and he seems mighty discouraged, as “moonshine” has hit rock bottom since the war. Standing near the arch talking to Major Roller is Tuck Lindsay, now a professor of Chemistry at V.M.I. Wasco seems to be in bitter argument with Colonel Roller as to whether or not he passed Latin, but anyway, Latin doesn’t bother him, as his record business is really booming. I’ve heard that Weed is Commandant at West Point now, and has produced a champion rifle team. Carlisle is topping the Medical Profession with a brain restorer, and has many medals for his work during the war. Fred Taylor is managing the World’s Heavyweight Boxing Champion now. He would be boxing, but his nose is worrying him. Max Bailes is back in West Virginia running four coal mines, and he would have been here, but his fourth child has the mumps. Jimmie Coen is approaching in his 755 convertible Buick sedan. Majors Fred Thomas and McCrum seem to be pretty stoop-shouldered from medals and campaign medals. Here comes Don Brown, the Czar of the Cum- Berland Breweries, offering a fencing foil with every bottle of German beer. The Wong brothers have started a professional fencing club in Panama. Incidentally, at the Olympics, held for the first time in New York, Thomas took top honors, with Wasco, Brown, D., Caudill, Wong, J., Wong, C., and Mandes. Shutte is now the mayor of Winchester, and Bigelow Thompson keeps the city under close watch for him in his autogyro, acting as Chief of Police. Jack Stanley is the governor of Virginia, while Larry keeps a farm going right outside of Galax. Al Venzer and Artie Stern have opened a swimming pool in Kennywood Park in Pittsburgh. The leading dentist of Danville is our own Charlie Williams, and Preacher Lawther has taken over the South African Missionaries. Keesling, Pitts, Stradley, Gentry, and Kreeger have started an internationally known chain of beer parlors with the headquarters 200 yards from A.M.A. Sanders, J., and Stone have started a law firm, and their main source of income is from “Red” Allyn, who is trying to divorce his fourth wife. It seems that she didn’t have as much money as he had anticipated. The firm of Elliott and Kearse are defending Mrs. Allyn on the grounds that she had money until she married “Red.” Beak Burden has finally decided to settle down and has a large farm just outside of Washington, and is састы با‎ + — ——— å da ' Gamal raising quite а family. The ace mechanics of New York are Jim Crawford, Bob Gorton, and Brooks, who have received their training in the Army Air Corps. Well, here comes the Navy, and they are covered with decorations. I'll see if I can name them for you: Lt. Sam Neff, C.P.O. Joe Dunn, C.P.O. Gruber, Capt. Ray Brown, Capt. Dave Seward, and Vice-Admiral Rich, all having distinguished themselves in the war. Speedy VanPelt is now a racing car driver, and Bill Jones is always there taking pictures of the winners. Southgate Lohman and Art Weinstein are now professors at M.I.T., while Boothe is teaching “How to Make Friends and Influence People” at William and Mary. Those three boys you see sporting Congressional Medals of Honor are George Carpenter, Jay Richardson, and Ray Kauffman, and they are really shined up. Bazemore, Welch, Woody, Field, H., and Johnson have all gone into a football career of some kind, such as coach, prop players, etc. Ed Thompson has taken over the job as Post Master. Freeman, R., Lemmon, Stewart, H. B., and Wilson, D., have been spend- ing most of their time trying to build a bridge across the Atlantic, while McQuillan and Melchor are trying their luck tunneling under. Cordero, Long, and Rexrode have opened a big night club in Palm Beach, Fla., and there has been a great argument there. Cockrell says that he can drink Green under the table, but Green denies it. Crist has made quite a name for himself as a drummer. I. W. Phillips and Sonny Page have settled down and are now running a farm in Virginia, while Bob Spilman runs a mint (mint for Mint Juleps) farm in North Carolina. Buddy Ross is still in the Army. He liked to clean rifles, so they redrafted him. Burt and Lawther, В. J., have bought a yacht and are sailing around the world for the fifth time. They have a crew of A.M.A. '45 classmen, and they are Richardson, R., Morse, and Leigh. (Only to evade the income tax.) Well, there goes the last note of “Auld Lang Syne,” and the cadets are head- ing for a train to get home, so best of luck to the Class of 45, till we meet again, U PS A $ revy 4 , А ү $ 2 M. | | 0 | so long. The home fires—the instrumentalities of day-to-day living also need to be kept alive. For example, the mothers, the young people, and the aged of the civilian population should be surrounded as gen- erously as possible with future financial security. In providing security of this kind, life insurance sets up defences that are supremely dependable. THE LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY OF VIRGINIA ESTABLISHED 1871 BRADFORD H. One familiar example is PRINTING. Once editor, once compositor, or press- man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of a camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer’s ink, symboli- cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. It is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. It is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and alert- ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an enormous industrial vitality, and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always find himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity. Years of experience have taught us! Printing Pays Us Only When It Pays You! MCCLURE PRINTING COMPANY THE RUNNELS PRESS COLLEGE ANNUALS AND CATALOGS ......
