They fight and are willing to die for what they hold dear, and will continue to fight until in victory they will be greeted with cheers. To those of them who have given their lives and to those who will give their lives, there is and always will be a certain triumph in the hearts of us all. Too soon cadet days fade and leave the cadet to face the perplexing problems of a world in the turmoil of history's greatest war. With the realization that remembrances of A. M.A. will become less vivid yet more precious as time pro- gresses, we have attempted to weave together fragments of all the events of this year. It is our hope that this 1943 Recall will remain always a real recall of happy memories. Carlson was detailed here by the War De- partment as P. M. S. T. He suceeded Lieutenant Colonel Ray W. Harris, who was forced to leave us due to ill health. In Lieutenant Carlson, who was ably assisted by Lieutenant Colonel Robinson, Colonel Louisell, Major Cherring- ton and Sergeant Collison, we found a man who was a soldier, a gentleman and a hard worker. His interest in our advancement in military was unsurpassed, and over-night, he became a part of us. Varsity turned in a fine record this year under the able coach- ing of Captain J. Albert Tomlin and Colonel Louisell. They were faced with one of the toughest schedules A. M. A. has had in several years. Among the teams they played were the Navy Plebes, V. M. I. Freshmen, University of Virginia Freshmen and others of equal strength. Out of the total of ten games played, they won 6 and lost 4. The two games, in which the best performances were given, were against the V. M. I. and the U. of Va. Frosh. We won over Virginia but lost V. M. I. Bill Tuminella and Bill Larner were named on the All-State Prep School Team and Dick Clay and Monk Davis were given Honorable Mention for All- State. To climax the season Augusta defeat ed their traditional rival Fishburne Military Academy in a thrilling game. This game was played on the home field and was accompanied by the usual good-natured rivalry between the two corps of cadets. The team this year was captained by Fred Cross and Tex Mahone, both lettermen from last year Members of the team to receive their Aâs were as follows: Mahone, Cross, Null, Bradley, Fricke, Davis, Clay, Tuminella, McCue, Moore, Lininger, Rush- more, Vandergrift, Larner, Eddy, Farrar and Eborn (who did a fine job as manager this year). J. V. FOOTBALL The opening game of the season was with Lee High in Staunton. Augusta was definitely superior in all departments of the game but did not take advantage of its superiority. Time and again we muffed our chances for victory. The game ended in a scoreless tie. In the two games with Stuarts Draft we held the advantage both in weight and ability and both were victories for our side. In the first game our attempts to run up a score were somewhat shattered for our eagerness made us careless. Many substitutes saw action in this game. Final score was 26 to 0. In return game S, D. surprised us by hurling a long flat pass which fortunately for them was completed for their first and only score of the season. In the next game which was against V. ©. D. B. we met our only defeat of the season. Our team appeared dazed from the first whistle and our opponents took advantage of this time and again. We did little if anything in the way of attack or defense. In the seasonâs final we met supposedly the Harrisonburg Reserve, supple- mented by the majority of their varsityâs players. We put up a game fight against the team that won the Class B High School championship and the game ended with the score 18 to 7 in favor of our opponents. Our line, particularly Porter and Wonn made many openings for our stellar quarterback Powell to crash through for a total 98 yards to his credit. PEEP FOOTBALL The Peep football team started its season inauspiciously, practicing on the back athletic field, and with no equipment. However, due to the fine spirit of the boys and the able coaching of Capt. Paul V. Hoover, the Peeps overcame these obstacles, In their first contest with the VSDB, the Peeps showed their vigor to win by downing the opponents 12 to 0. Following up this victory, they defeated an aggressive and determined squad sponsored by the Kiwanis of Waynesboro by a close score, In the next encounter of the season the Peeps were held to a tie by the Junior team of the VSDB. In the subsequent game with Fishburne, A. M. A. was defeated by over- whelming odds. Ina return engagement with Waynesboro A. M, A. was defeated by the score of 12 to 7. In the football finalle at Augusta, the second J. Vâs held the Peeps toa scoreless tie for three quarters. The Peeps held the advantage and threatened to score many times. The final period saw both fighting on equal terms. VARSITY BASKETBALL Our basketball team this year had a very hard schedule which called for 15 games. Under the coaching of Captain Tomlin and the leadership of Captain Earl Cabaniss the team played hard throughout the secson and at the end of the season, Jack Holcomb and Claude Bradley received honorable mention for the All-State Team. They got off to a good start but it did not last long. They won the first, but lost the next three games. Fork Union won by a score of 50 to 31. Massa- nutten 64 to 27 and Harrisonburg 23 to 13. They met Harrisonburg for the second time and defeated them by the close score of 30 to 28. After this came the best and hardest hitting opponent of the year, Greenbrier, which defeated us 45 to 29, âAceâ Holcomb took the honors by ringing up eleven points. The best football game ever played on a basketball court was played at Fishburne. Fishburne won 33 to 19 in a hard fought game. Washington and Lee got the surprise of their lives when they came to Augusta and went away with the short end of a 38 to 27 score. In their second encounter with Fish- burne they settled for their first defeat at Fishburne by soundly trouncing them SOnton LS: Although they won only six games out of the 15 they merit a lot of credit because the odds were against them in nearly every game and they never ad- mitted defeat until the final whistle. BOXING TEAM The 1943 Boxing Team upheld the record set by previous teams by taking the South Atlantic Prep and High School Championship Tourney in Charlottesville. They won by a large margin from such schools as Charlotte Hall M.A. of Mary- land, Charleston High of W. Va., and Miller School of Virginia. Their only de- feat was at the hands of the U. of Virginia Freshmen who won over them by one point. Due to the difficulty of obtaining transportation there were fewer meets this year than is customary or their record would have been more out- standing. A large amount of this credit must go to their coach, Captain Mor- rissey, who with only three of last years team as a nucleus, built a champion- ship team. The team this year was captained by Tom Warner, a veteran boxer with three years of fighting behind him. The other two lettermen from last year were Cecil DePriest and Terry Tariche, both of whom gave outstanding performances throughout the season. The others on the team were: Bob Porter, Bob Powell, Bill Tuminella, Adolph Null, Harry Van Riper, George Solan, Ed- ward Polisher, Henry Dunbar, Bill Eddy, and Tom Caruso, Freddy Costa was manager. Those to receive major monograms this year were: Tom Warner, Cecil Depriest, Terry Tariche, Bill Tuminella, Bill Eddy, Adolph Null, Edward Polisher, and Bob Porter. The other members of the team received minor mono- grams. FENCING TEAM Fencing at Augusta enjoyed its second most successful season in the history of the sport at this institution. Captain Paul V. Hoover again brought forward much promising new material while further developing those who remained from last yearâs squad, undefeated in prep school competition. Practice began early in December and continued far beyond the regular season which ended March Ist. The first meet was with the Varsity Team of the University of Virginia, held at Charlottesville, and the second one here at Fort Defiance. Although defeated in both meets, we, nevertheless, gave these foilsmen a good fight, and we gained much needed experience which enabled us to gain unchallenged supremacy among prep schools in the state of Virginia. Small and McGloon came very close in un- throning the co-captains of the University. Fork Union was the next school met in subsequent meets here at Augusta and later at Fork Union. This school brought a South Jersey Champion surrounded by four excellent assistants. Al- though forced in the first meet, A. M. A. showed its superiority and administered a stunning defeat to F. U. In the return meet, McGloon, Small, Haycox, and Linstone won two of their bouts. In the final meet of the season, Woodberry was given a crushing defeat when A, M. A. romped over them to bring to close a glorious season. Lee, Bowers, Villanova, and J. B. Hevener were instrumental in keeping up this teamâs fine record. Sine A. M. A. started its winning streak four years ago, we have won seventeen meets out of twenty-one, losing but once to a prep school, while the other three losses were to college varsities. RIFLE TEAM The 1943 Rifle Team opened its season with a match with Hargrave Mili- tary Academy who had a determined and difficult team to beat, but the A. M. A. team was victorious by 46 points. Three weeks later the Intercollegiate Corps Area Match was fired and al- though the A. M. A. team did not place as high as it had hoped, it did make a good showing, Soon after this, the four way match was fired at Fishburne Military School between, Fishburne, Fork Union, Massanutten, and Augusta teams. Augusta placed third in this match beating Massanutten and losing to Fishburne and Fork Union. The entire rifle season however is based around the Hearst Trophy which was fired during the week of the 19th. Our team did not place, however it was honored by having the highest individual scorer in the Essentially Necessary Military Schools. The score was made by cadet Collingwood who is the captain of the team. His score was 188 out of a possible 200. Four positions. The members of the Rifle Team are: Collingwood, Haden, (mgr.), Jansing, Todd, Small, Burge, Clede, Brewer, R., Cockrell, Louiselle. i : ' : : in J - : e i yh es : | ao : | . 4 i 5 : i Coa al : ga Pcche syed mI ae ied . a r -_ . 4 ee 2 = i e . â e sees ieecauae oo ae J. V. BASKETBALL Although not winning the majority of their games, the J. V. basketball team held some fast and very close games against schools which outclassed them. The team spirit and cooperation among the boys was due largely to the able coaching of Lt. Davidson who gave his whole-hearted attention to the job. The most exciting game of the year was with the V. 5S. D. B., the outcome of the game not being decided until the final thirty seconds of play, when a sharpshooter of V.S.D. B. scored with a field goal. Due to transportation difficulties, the schedule was limited to 10 games of which we won 4 and lost 6. SWIMMING TEAM The A. M. A. Tankmen, under the able tutelage of Captain Morissey and Captained by Cadet Gardner, lost four meets, two to Massanutten and two to Fishburne. The members of the team were: Cadets Gardner, McOwen, Gruber, Keppler, Venzer, Emerson, Long, Louiselle, Lowinger, Clay, Owen, and Cross. Cadet Gardner took four âfirstsâ in the 100 yard breast-stroke and three âfirstsâ in the diving. His only second was taken when he ran into too difficult competition from the amateur Diving Champion of Pennsylvania. Cadet Venzer took two âfirsts,â one âsecond,â and a âthirdâ in the 50 yard free style. Cadet McOwen captured one âfirst,â two âseconds,â and a âthirdâ in the 220 yard free style. Cadet Long took a âââsecondâ and three âthirdsâ in the back-stroke. Cadet Keppler is credited with three âthirdsâ in the 100 yard free style. Although the aquamen lost all of their meets the competitive spirit was never lacking.
