ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF CADET CORPS AUGUSTA MILITARY ACADEMY Fort Defiance ...... Virginia UI CUICHTIOL WE entered in time of Peace, WE leave in time of WAR. We, the Staff of the 1942 Recall, dedicate this | war publication to THE AUGUSTA MEN IN THE SERVICE | To those who were in the service and have retired or been killed, to those who are now in the service, and . to those who are going into the service, we wish to donate this small token of our appreciation of the real honor and glory they all deserve. Either on land, in the air, or on the sea, they are all fighting for the same common cause. Long after we grow old, the principles set forth in this book will still be respected and looked up to. We will always “Remember Pearl Harbor.” FOREWORD ve as a re) and N= —= é willl impartial, chron of hécoous pf the schag| ie il b@ett xe égi | : eee ‘ M: . { is ad = 4 later yoGes Gh recatking C beth : RX y Re f , i to usta ADMINISTRATION ATHLETICS CLASSES ACTIVITIES MILITARY SOCIAL and HUMOR Book Ore ADMINISTRATION COLONEL ha; ROLLER, graduate of the University of Virginia, has been co-Principal of A.M.A., head of lan- guage department and head of the classifica- tion department for almost an equal length of time. The cadets hold Colonel Roller in great respect for his understanding and considera- tion of the individual cadet. MAJOR C. S. ROLLER; JR., graduate of V.M.I., the Commandant of Cadets and co-Principal of A.M.A., has, for over forty years been head of the Mathe- matics and Science Departments. Together with this, he has been head of the athletic department, a staunch friend of every cadet, a guiding light for everyone. P - ‘ ‘ - - : MAJ. WARREN S. ROBINSON LT. COL. ALLEN L. FULTON MAJ. He and his assistants, Cadet Minor, Vice-President, Cadet Guerrant, Sec- retary, and Cadet Knox, Treasurer, devote very much of their time to aiding the corps and making it the best corps ever to attend A. M, A. Many of our extra activities were obtained by these men. Due to the excellent conduct of our corps this year, little unpleasant work was required. We all take our hats off to them, They have a special place in the heart of every cadet. SENTFORS ALPER, MORTEN a “Abeie” is a good natured fellow of pleasing personality whom we ail expect great things from. His fine showing in football and his great boxing season have helped to make “Abe” a popular barracks gentleman. If Wytheville is on the map, he helped put it there. BEAM, GEORGE “George” in his three years at Augusta has piled up more honors than any other cadet in a similar period of time. His ready wit, and good looks will insure success in any field he may | Pp AN chose, As an officer, gentleman, a friend and a | he! leader, he will be remembered for a lifetime. BEARD, RUTLAND “Limey,” during his two years’ stay with us has staunchly upheld the British virtue of thor- oughness. He is a friend you can always depend upon, so to a fine student with a good-natured smile, we sorrowfully bid him ‘“Tally-ho.” 1942 BERRY, WILLIAM “Bill, a third year cadet, was off to a slow start, but this year he made quite a showing of himself. His work as a member of the Honor Committee was fair and just. His record as a swimmer was enviable. Last but not least, was his outstanding football performance as a begin- ner on the varsity team. Good-by and good luck. CORT, JOHN “John,” ex-John Powers model, has made many girls swoon at his glance. His leadership in the band was outstanding. We know we have been bidding adieu to a “killer.” DEAN, DONALD “Duck” came here four ago as a mere duck- ling, and is leaving quite a grown man; that is his past. His future holds many bright moments. Industrious and witty, we bid farewell to Donald Dean. SENIORS EVANS, WILLIAM “Will” became one of the most popular cadets in his three years at Augusta. He is by far the best-natured boy we’ve ever met. His patriotic enrollment in the United States Air Force will always be remembered at A.M.A. Happy land- ings, Will—we recognize a future officer when we see one, FOX, PETE Not much can be said about such a quiet boy as Pete, but those that know him best have found his sterling loyalty undiminished. As a “B” Com- pany corporal he did a fine job and we are sorry to see him depart from old Augusta. FURBER, GEORGE P. George, with his Boston accent and Yankee habits, will long be remembered as an honor stu- dent. We wish him great success at Harvard next fall. Good material will never go to waste. - 142 GUERRANT, MORRIS “Punchy” has seen many handfuls of leather in his five years at Augusta. Captain of the Box- ing Team and good looks are sure to recommend him well at the University of Maryland. May the Champ always wear his crown. — HAMILTON, ELBERT “Unk,” most military of our cadet corps, is, out of ranks, easy to get along with and happy- og 1 go-lucky. President of the Student Body, big brother to everyone, Unk leaves us a fine example of American Youth. His qualities of leadership will stand out in the hearts of all as a Lieutenant in our United States Army. HANKEY, STACY “Stacy” lived up to his name by grinning bash- fully through his three years at Augusta, Silence is golden, however, and we know he will achieve great acclaim as a youth entering life. aq 4 SENIORS HARRYMAN, C. B. “Bunky,” a quite young member of the gradu- ating class, is a dead shot with a rifle and will force his way into anyone’s heart. May his ex- perience on the rifle team aid him in later life. So long, Harry. HEILMAN, OTHMER A glowing tribute to “Ott” paid by the cadets and Staff of the RecaL for his untiring nimble fingers. His service as a typist has been beneficial to everyone from Major Roller to the cadets themselves. His pert remarks reflect a winning personality. To a fine student, we sorrowfully bid good-bye. HINES, ANGUS “Angus,” our photographer friend, attained his goal by becoming Best New Cadet of 1941-'42. This insurance of a successful future is only part of a brilliant life ahead. With the last click of the shutter, we say good-bye to Angus Hines. Ge ders HYER, WALTER “Wat’s” two years at Augusta were accented by his participation in almost every type of Junior varsity sport. Seeing him go is one of the saddest things that we have to experience. INGRAM, HENRY LEWIS To “Dumbo” we say this—“‘your good nature and fine figure will always remind us of every- one’s friend, you.” Though you eat a lot, your humor will always make up for it. We know you're worth your weight in gold. We bid good- bye to one of our Tar-heels. KEESLING, DON Our highest praise to Don as a member of many of our winning teams. Don, excelling in academic and military life, paints a bright future for some girl’s life. We regretfully see Don em- bark on the sea of life. Bon voyage. SENIORS LANE, WILLIAM Wonder-Boy’s flashing performance on our basket-ball team was rewarded by being selected a member of the All-State Basket-ball Team. Tall, good looking, and good natured. We regretfully say good-bye to Bill Lane. LANGSTAFF, JACK. . “Peanuts” is another good article in a small package. Ace decorator of our gym. You could always find him hanging dangerously from a rafter, helping to make our dances a success. So long, “Shorty,” and the best of luck. LINSTONE, BOB Most. popular with the ladies as.well as the cadets, accented by his personality, wit, and good looks made Bob a sure bet for a great success. Achieving more in his three years at A.M.A. than any other third year man, we pay homage to a leader. Need we say more about a swell, good natured fellow? 1942 LYON, BILL Bill started his career at A.M.A. five years ago as one of the biggest triflers Major Roller has seen in forty years. This year Bill has really turned over a new leaf, accepting responsibilities as an officer of the Ciceronian Literary Society and a Lieutenant in “B” Company. Working hard as Art Editor of this RecaLi, and we ex pect Bill to come out on top in the end. MAHONE, WORTHINGTON Better known to the cadets as “Tex.” Out- standing in athletics. He was elected captain of the track team and his football ability will always be remembered at A.M.A. MASON, LEMUEL : “Bud” is quite a studious fellow and M.L.T. is sure to have a boom season with this donation from A.M.A. We feel that Bud is an insurance -of success. He doesn’t need luck, he just needs a chance. SEN ORS MINOR, JOHN Vice-President of the Student Body, First Captain, President of the Y.M.C.A., second most popular old cadet, best Commissioned Officer, Best Student, who could help but love and admire our highest officer, our best boy, John Bolling Minor. MITCHELL, LEONARD “Stud,” outstanding basket-ball player and per- manent member of the Honor Roll. You have shown us that you are okay both in academic life and on the athletic field. You have the stuff to put it over, so good luck, Bill. MOORE, J. E. ’ “Jimmie,” a sergeant in the band, has in his second year at Augusta created a great vacuum in Captain Manch’s band room. Well liked by the teachers and academically inclined, we know that Jimmie will be a succes s in later life. to42 POLE, CLARK The resemblance between Clarke Gable and Clark Pole does not stop at the: similarity in names, but reflects magnetic personality. A quiet, well liked boy, with a facility to make friends, will, we are sure, aid him in later life. PAPERNICK, JAMES “Paper,” one of our Pennsylvania boys, kept the entire corps in good spirits by his ready smile and easy wit. When he leaves it will be Virginia’s gain and Pennsylvania’s loss, however, we are looking forward to meeting him again. SANDBERG, LANE “Gabby” has been talking his way out of col- lege algebra and into the hearts of the cadets once again. Fred Astaire of Augusta and Don Juan of the third stoop sinks. We regretfully part with the friendship of a great boy, Lane. a SENIORS SMATHERS, JAY “Jerk”’—Studying to follow in his father’s foot- steps. Has a knack of talking his way out of any situation. His qualities of leadership will not go unheeded. STAPLES, CRAWFORD “Craw” came to us with a reputation from his brother “Pete” as a fine boy. He has exceeded our biggest hopes. Third best New Cadet, a gen- Uleman, and a scholar, we bid farewell to him. STULTZ, “ZEPH” “Zeph,” our mighty eater and outstanding ath- lete will triumph in any field due to his magnetic personality. “Zeph” in his three years at Augusta has proved that he will make ‘“good”’ in life. 1942 VASS, FRANK Appearing five times in our Cadets “Who's Who,” Frank, our neatest, politest, best corporal, best N.C.O., and third most military cadet, leaves us to stride forth into a troubled world. To crawl over obstacles is one of his finest virtues. We know that every cadet at Augusta will miss his presence, but as we all know, all good things must come to an end, VIDNOVIC, STEPHEN A.M.A.’s finest athlete and Pennsylvania’s “best boy” is a brief sketch of “Steve” and his eventful career. Some time in the near future we will read of Steve’s accomplishments on the All- American Team; we sorrowfully bid good-bye to one of the finest boys that we have ever met. WOLF, JOHN “Shep” has not been heard of too much because of his confining his presence to the C.W. bar- racks. “Shep” is a good sport, however, and his continued success is evident. The boys in it deserve very. much credit, for they spend a great deal of their time practicing and learning to drill and being responsible for their rifles. They have to keep the instruments in first class condition and they don’t stop practicing when drill is over, but always continue for an hour or so. M. A. He is the adviser and directs the athletic program. Lieutenant Craft was appointed Athletic director in place of Major Deane, who was called into active service. With the athlete fee, which has been included in the tuition, he has equipped us with the best equipment in all sports. Besides this, we have had a full schedule of sports and intramurals. May in the years to come, he be as successful as he was this year. The football team had an on and off season and a tough schedule. We started the season with what looked like a fac- simile of last year’s team, by defeating Hargrave M. S., 27-7. Then we dropped a heartbreaker to Massanutten, which was the result of injuring several key- men, M.M.S.—7, A.M.A.—6. The team then went to Washington to defeat Char- lotte Hall, 21-7. We dropped our next game to a powerful S.M.A. eleven, 25-0. Our third defeat came, when a blocked punt spelled touchdown for a scrappy Suffolk High Team. On Thanksgiving Day our team defeated Fishburne M. S. in one of the most exciting games of the year, 19-6. We ended the season with a loss to Fork Union, 27-0. Se ala FOOTBALL —, F. Hamilton Captain Miss Anne Hamilton Sponsor ly Le heKasanich Coach Wi We vn Lieutenant Craft Assistant Coach Vidnovic, Dorsk, Stultz, Cross, Hamilton, Evans, Cotcoan, Noe, Mahone, Gauld, Airheart - Stanley, D., Ingram, Higgins, Lepschiz, Clay, Davis MEET THE LETTER MEN CAPTAIN “HOPS” ADAMS—Tackle—Hops is one of our best men, but a leg injury in the early part of the season kept him from being the ball player that he was last year. Despite this injury, “Hops” was in there fighting his heart out every minute that he played. CO-CAPTAIN HAMILTON—Guard—‘Ham” is a dependable guard with the spirit of a Dodger fan. The bigger they come, the harder he'll hit them. His true A.M.A. spirit brought our team out of many a tight spot. ZEPH STULTZ—Guard—‘Big Zeph” is one of the toughest guards an opponent ever bucked. He was better known to the team as “Stonewall” Stultz. FULTON COTTON—Center—‘‘Footie” is a flashy center if you have ever seen one. He intercepted as many passes backing up the line as our opponents completed in several games. His pass from center is as true as an arrow. TEX MAHONE—End—‘Tex” is a ten second man who can drag down any pass he can touch, He is also known throughout the state for his defensive ability. BILL LARNER—Back—“Bill” is a shifty back with plenty of football in him. Bill dragged down quite a few of the opponents’ backs behind their own line of scrimmage. BILL BERRY—End—“Bill” was indeed a coach’s dream at end. His defensive and offensive ability made him one of the outstanding players of the team. FRED CROSS—Back—“Whitey” can run, pass, kick and do anything else vou can expect froma player. He is as shifty as a woman driver and twice as fast. BILLY NOE—Back—‘Rabbit” was a very dependable back. His shifting ability brought us out, of the fire many times, CHARLES JORDAN—Tackle—‘Tuft” Jordan showed natural ability in his first year on the varsity. “Tuff” will probably be the outstanding player of next year. BOB DORSK—Back—“Bob” was slowed down a bit by a bad knee injury, but still too good for the opponent. When Bob got into a broken field you could chalk up‘a touchdown. STEVE VIDNOVIC—Back—Steve was probably the outstanding player of the year. He was the brains of the team and was the only player to play every minute of every game. Steve is all football player and a ten second man to boot. WILL EVANS—Back—A potential All-American if the Army doesn’t get him. GEORGE BEAM—Manager—George was very popular with the boys and a very efficient manager. JOHN KASUNICH—Coach—Although “Teno” did not receive a Major Monogram, he deserves one, for in his heart he played every game and he is prob- ably still playing some. He never missed a practice. MINOR MONOGRAMS Minor Monograms were awarded to the following men: Al McCue, a depend- able back; Staples, one of our best substitutes; Lepschiz, a guard of more than average ability ; Smathers, B., next year’s first string tackle ; Smathers, J., a block- ing back who is plenty tough; Joe Loftus, an end who can really snare a pass; Jack Baumgardner, a tackle with some punch, Jack Airheart, next year’s varsity guard; Clacky Walker, a smooth running back for next year’s varsity ; Dick Clay, one of our best substitute tackles; Bob Linstone, candidate for All-American Water Boy. Dorsk, Vidnovic, Cross, Noe Evans, Ingram, Stultz, Cotton, Hamilton, Davis, Mahone JUNIOR VARSITY Booth, G., Aguilera, Stuart, Tarichie, Trentou, Wilson, L., Hines, Mitchell, L. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL The Junior Varsity Football team of 1941 had a good season even though the schedule was a short one. The highlight. of the year was the victory over a great Fishburne team, 19-6, The season began with a 13-0 win over Stuarts Draft in which the boys stowed a great team spirit. Their playing ability increased, and in the next game with Stuarts Draft they registered a 31-0 victory. The only loss was suffered at the hands of S.M.A. by a score of 33-0, Combining a strong line with a great backfield led by Jack “Flash” Holcomb, this year’s team was really outstanding. MINNOW FOOTBALL TEAM The Augusta Midgets put up a fine showing even though they did lose more games than they won. The season was opened with the V.M.1. Juniors of Lex- ington, which ended in a 6-6 tie. Ernie Wasco rade history by scoring the first tally of the season, Next V.S.D.B. came to Fort Defiance, and in the final quarter they pushed over three touchdowns to win 19-0. S.M.A. was our next opponent and although we outweighed them we kept our victory score 19-0. V.S.D.B. was next met on their field and this turned out to be a scoring contest with Augusta coming out on top by a score of27-13. Much credit must be given to Lieutenant Paul Hoover for his untiring efforts m to lead his proteges to victory and success. Lieutenant Craft Coach Possessing some of the finest basketball material ever in evidence at Augusta, our quintet came through a difficult schedule with an excellent record. The team ex- hibiting ability and skill in all depart- ments of the game started off the season by losing to superior teams but came back in the latter half to defeat teams that at the beginning had defeated us. Our ability was much in evidence when we lost by the margin of two points to the high school and military champions of the state, Hargrave and Newport News. Two cadets brought added fame to the blue and white banner of A.M.A. when Bob Cremins and Bill Lane won the much coveted places on the All-State Prep School Mythical Quintet. Much credit must be given Coach Craft for his untiring efforts in developing the better material and uncovering promising new talent. Mike Suttle’s crude attempt at man- ager kept the coach and team in good spirits throughout the year. BASKETBALL E. B. Cabaniss Captain Miss Davy Glovier Sponsor BOXING Captain McCue Coach With the two remaining letter men of last year’s team, Captain Guerrant and Tom Warner, as a nucleus, our capable boxing coach, Captain McCue, turned out a well balanced team. Considering the type of this year’s schedule and our per- formance in each of the contests we point with pride to our successful season. Captain Guerrant turned in his second year of being undefeated and brought his number of wins to nine, three of them being by knockouts. The regulars on the boxing team were Lee, Knox, Tarechie, Warner, Guerrant, DePriest, Alper, Wheeler, Donald Stanley, Costa, H. E., Adams and Dorsk, Others who saw action were J. Moore, Healey, Brooke, Larner, Jones and E. Roberts. Lee and Guerrant, A.M.A.’s lone entrants in the South Atlantic Prep Tourna- ment held in Charlottesville, emerged champions in the 110 and 127 Ib, classes, for the second time. M. P. After a string of record breaking scores, the team reached the height of its achievements by winning the William Randolph Hearst Trophy. Cadet C. B. Harryman, team captain, turned in the highest score ever recorded at A.M.A. Prior to this, in a match with Staunton Military Academy, the team fired the highest combined score on record at Augusta. As a reward for their brilliant effort Major Roller, Commandant and Athletic Director of the Academy, saw fit to award the team a “major monogram.” In addition to this, another great honor was bestowed on the team by the presentation of the coveted Hearst Trophy and individual medals. It enjoyed the best year in the history of the sport. Practice was begun under the capable tutelage of Lieutenant Paul Hoover, assisted by Lieutenant Ragno early in December. Shortly before the Christmas leave, the V.M.I. Freshman team met A.M.A. and went down in defeat by the score of 10-8. Towards the end of January Woodberry Forest came to Augusta and were swamped 7-2. A week later V. M. I. was met again; we won 11-4. North Carolina Freshmen were defeated 12-3. Woodberry was next met and here we were almost defeated, but Stultz came through and broke the tie to win 6-5. The next evening the Varsity team from V.P.I. journeyed to Fort Defiance and nosed us out by a single point for our only defeat of the year. In our last meet with North Carolina we ended our season by defeating them for the second time 8-1, Small, Linstone, and Stultz won top honors in scoring for this season. Captain Sponsors J. Daniel Mr. and Mrs. Daniels BASEBALL The baseball team started the season off with a, bang by defeating Middle- townHi 11-6; Washington and Lee Freshmen nosed us out in the next contest 5-4: we came back to swamp Fishburne 16-2; S. M. A.’s highly touted team was held to 5-4 win; then again we won from Virginia 11-4. Some of the cadets responsible for this successful season thus far are Capt. Daniels, Cabaniss, Ellis, Brackens, Holeomb, Vidnovic, Thomas, Keesling, Dorsk, Berry, Berens, Staples and McCue. This squad has what it takes to give Coach Kasunich a most suc- cessful season and we are confident that they will live up to our expectations. Captain Sponsor W. T. Mahone Miss Mina Matthews THE TRACK TEAM The Blue and White Racers were slightly handicapped when their able and outstanding coach, Lieutenant Craft, was called away suddenly by the Navy. Despite this, their untiring efforts have brought out definite ability and skill. The first meet was a triangular meet with Woodberry Forest and R.-M.A. which resulted in our defeat by a very strong Woodberry team, We then journeyed to Bridgewater where we easily defeated them. We lost the next meet to Univer- sity of Virginia Freshmen. Captain Mahone, Lepchitz, Wright, and Purswell participated in the Annual State Meet in Charlottesville. THE TENNIS TEAM The season is just beginning and the prospects for this sport look very good. Six of last year players have returned: Captain Small, Harryman, Smathers, J., Stanley, D., Fox, and Wilson, L. They will be aided by Baumgardner, Swing, Knadler, Alper, Smith, J., Langstaff, Stanley, T., and Haden. Major Webb has brought forth wonderful material and we are confident of a victorious season. It showed great form in winning seven and losing five games. Coached by Lieutenant Hugh Davisson, it gave a good account of itself in every game it played. Some of the highlights of the season were the two wins over Staunton Nisley Academy and the defeat of Shenandoah College second five, 62-32. Jack Holcomb, the team’s leading scorer, stood out with 22 points in this game. To show their appreciation of his excellent coaching, the team gave Lieu- tenant Davisson a beautiful gold trophy. J. Wales, John Minor “AD ASTRA PER ASPERA” “To the Stars Through Difficulty”—the motto of our school. Major C. S. Roller, Jr., organized this fraternity in 1924 and it has increased by ten new mem- bers each year. The fraternity is composed of those cadets who have risen to the top through difficulties. It is the sole aim of every cadet at A.M.A. to become a member and we do not hesitate to say that any cadet who can acquire this honor will become a great success in later life. The present faculty members are: Major C. S. Roller, Jr., Captain J. Cyrus McCue, Jr., and Lieutenant Samuel S. Wales. The cadet member with us this year is John’ Minor, who received this great honor last year. May every person who wears the Ad Astra Pin always remember dear old A. M. A. Vidnovic, Cotton, Davis, Vass, Berry, W., Stultz, Linstone, Smathers, J., Cabaniss, Knox, Guerrant, Minor, Hamilton “THE HONOR COMMITTEE” The men elected to the Honor Committee are considered the most reliable, most honorable, and most dependable men at A.M.A. These men hold the highest, yet the hardest office in school. Each man has a difficult duty to perform, for sometimes he must decide the future of a cadet who has gone wrong. Their main principle is to try to make a boy, not to break him, ; The officers of the Student Body are automatically made officers of this com- = mittee. Therefare, Cadet Hamilton became President, Cadet Minar, Vice-Prest- dent, Cadet Knox, Secretary, and Cadet Guerrant, Treasurer. Two cadets elected from the fourth year class were Cabaniss and Smathers, J.; third year class were Stultz, Linstone, and Berry, W.; second year class Vass, Davis, and Cotton. The new cadet elected this year as adviser was Cadet Vidnovic. ce Minor, Major Webb, Mrs. Robinson, Hamilton. Davis, Vass, Cort, Heilman, Donovan Y¥. mM. C. A This year Cadet Minor holds the high office of President and he has done an excellent job. The efficiency and co-operation of Cadet Hamilton made him Vice- President, Cadet Vass as Secretary, kept the minutes and notes, while Cadet Davis controlled the office of Treasurer. Other members of the Y.M.C.A. Cabinet who made it a success were Cadets Cort, Heilman, Donovan, and Eborn. To Mrs. W. S. Robinson we wish to express our sincere appreciation for her interest and attendance at all our programs. Without her as our pianist, the “Y” would not have been what it was. We find it difficult to express our g ratitude to Major Webb, who was always ready to encourage us in anything we under- took to do. Smith, Guggenheimer, Rev. It was started several years ago for the purpose of teaching the cadets something about the Bible. The class is purely voluntary, however, many cadets attend regularly. The class meets each Thursday evening under the direction of Reverend J. M. McBryde, pastor of the Old Stone Church. He deserves a great deal more credit than is given him, for he is always anxious to give each member his full co- operation. The classes are always very interesting and various questions are assigned each member for discussion. The entire class joins in the discussion, making the meeting beneficial to the boy and also the entire group. Much credit is due to the officers of the class who took much interest in helping it progress. Cadet Leatherman was selected as President, Cadet Savage as Vice-President, and Cadet Eborn.as Secretary. G. A. Beam J. B. We have tried to the best of our ability to give you these happenings, especially this year, on account of the war, we have tried to present you with the best Recai possible. The Recatt Staff was under full direction of their editor, George Beam. This year he rose from Advertising Manager to Editor-in-Chief and carried a double load on his shoulders on account of the change in Faculty Adviser. We owe him a great deal of credit for his fine work and leadership. However, he was assisted by Advertising Manager Bob Linstone, and the other members of the staff. The staff got off to a good start, after some time had elapsed, and after many nights work they finally succeeded in doing a very good job of turning out a fine RECALL. John Minor was Business Manager and did a very good job for the time he had to spare. Bob Linstone secured the advertisements for the book, being well assisted by Mike Suttle. Bill Stuart handled the directory, which is a difficult job, and Frank Vass really kept his pen busy for the Social and Literary sections. The art king, Bill Lyon, truly spent some time on the different sketches throughout the book. As you can notice, he can really draw. Other various features were handled by Guerrant, Fagg, and Hines, who played an important part in our publishing this RECALL. Last again, but very important, is Ott Heilman, whose second year as typist really kept the paper rolling off the press. We want to thank Ott for his fine work. CICERONIAN LITERARY SOCIETY The Ciceronian Literary Society, one of the oldest in America among Prep- School circles, was founded by Professor Charles Roller, the father of our present principals. It has progressed from its modest beginning and has become an integral part in the school activities. Most of the cadets begin to miss the meetings and debates in the middle of the month, but at the end of the month everyone is again pleased when Major Roller announces, “During the sixth period there will be a meeting of the Ciceronian Literary Society.” The success of this society can be traced to our very able President, Bill Knox, who took time off from his other many activities to preside over every meeting with the assurance of a veteran, The Vice-President, Will Evans, was a fine officer, helping the President to the best of his ability. As Secretary, Bob Lin stone worked hard and diligently, performing each of his assigned duties well throughout the entire year. The Sergeant-at-Arms, Bill Lyon, completed the officers of this efficient or- ganization. To Major Roller, our Faculty Adviser, we extend our gracious and sincere thanks. He has taught us the rudiments of parliamentary procedure and has given us a background for future public speaking. The question for debate at the final meeting of the society was, resolved: The United States Should Have Declared War on Germany at Same Time England Did. On the affirmative side were Cadets Evans, Smathers, Berens, and on the negative were Cort, Stultz, Suttle. SENIOR CLASS AGH ORME R sts crblns AO Ute oso wend eatwib in hI wie «ete a! Augusta is one of the finest schools in the country and we know that these thoroughly trained graduates will speak well for our honor school. The class was organized under the capable direction of Lieutenant-Colonel Robinson and the officers elected were: Cadet Minor, President ; Cadet Hamilton, Vice-President ; Cadet Smathers, Secretary-Treasurer, and Cadet Knox, Historian. MONOGRAM CLUB Our Monogram Club this year functioned as an exclusive organization. This year we have a smaller number of members than we had for the past six years due to the restrictions our athletic director put on winning a major monogram, We have at last achieved an organization you have to “put out” to belong to. The season was highlighted by the annual monogram initiation and informal monogram dance at the final exercises. Book Six SOCIAL AND HUMOR THANKSGIVING DANCES LEADER J. B. Minor WITIL Miss Jean Ray FOUNDERS’ DAY BALL LEADER G. A. Beam WITH Miss VirGInta PREsSTWooD THANKSGIVING DANCES We opened our social season of the year with the Thanksgiving Dances. Many thought these to be the best dances of the year. These dances were led by Cadet Minor with Miss Gene Ray of Danville, Virginia. The music was furnished by Ted Ross and his orchestra and the gym was decorated beautifully with corn- stalks and crepe paper to give it the Thanksgiving fashion. FOUNDERS DAY BALL Since there was not any Alumni Weekend, every one looked forward to the greatest day of the school year history, Founders Day, May 8. On that night the Founders Day Ball was held, being led by Cadet George Beam, accompanied by Miss Virginia Prestwood of Staunton.;,assisted by Bob Linstone, accompanied by Miss Joan Bennett of New York. The gym was decorated differently than ever before. The orchestra stand was placed in the center of the gym floor with the cadets and their dates dancing around it. The music was furnished by Jimmy Doman and his orchestra from Winchester. LEADER J. B. SMATHERS WITH Miss Carotyn BALL at vali se “DEFENSE DANCES” As a climax to our Winter Social Activities we had, instead of our usual Mid-Winter Dance, Defense Dances: Due to the present world situation we thought these dances to be more appropriate. The object of these dances was to secure enough money to buy a defense bond for a child whose father was killed in action on the attack of Pearl Harbor. The music for the formal dance was furnished by Joel Palmer and_ his orchestra, which was opened by a short military figure, led by Cadet Smathers, J., With Miss Carolyn Ball of Staunton, Virginia, assisted by Cadet Vass with Miss Anne Reaves of Galax, Virginia. Jimmy Dorman furnished the music for the informal dance on Saturday night. These dances were enjoyed by many cadets as well as their parents. The gym was beautifully decorated with flags of the United Nations with a machine gun emplacement in front of the orchestra stand to put it in the patriotic fashion. ! LEADER E. F. HAMILTON WITH Miss Jean Davis FINAL COTILLION CLUB BALL After a series of successful dances throughout the year, the Cotillion Club ended the season with the Final Cotillion Club Ball. This great event was led by the President of the Cotillion Club, “Unc” Hamilton, with Miss Jean Davis of Washington. The gym was decorated with the beautiful American Flags and the floor was well occupied by cadets and alumni with their dates. The music that thrilled the group was by Dan Gregory and his well-known orchestra. This dance was featured by the presence of many girls from the cadets’ respective home towns. The Cotillion Club did an excellent job of providing entertainment through- out the year and its efforts were sincerely appreciated by the corps. Minor, Beam, G., Leatherman, Sandberg, Linstone, Suttle, Langstaff, Vass, Smathers, President Hamilton COTILLION CLUB This year’s Cotillion Club has proven itself to be one of the most efficient in many years. The officers worked very hard to give the cadets the best dances possible and it can truthfully be said that all the dances were very successful. Cadet Hamilton was elected President, Cadet Minor Vice-President, Cadet Smathers, J., Secretary, Cadet Beam, G., Treasurer. Much credit should also be given to the cadets on the committee, which included Cadets Cabaniss, Linstone, Vass, and Suttle. The social season included four formal dances and an informal every two weeks. FINAL BALL LEADER J. B. Minor WITH Miss Jean Ray ASSISTANT LEADER E. F. HAMILTON WITH Miss Caro. Lee HrcKock Long before the election of the President for the Final Ball everyone knew who would be elected, because there was really only one cadet in school who was worthy. of this high office. Cadet Minor was elected with an overwhelming majority and he chose as his assistant Cadet Hamilton. The Ball was opened with the military figure, led by Cadet Minor with Miss Jean Ray of Danville, Virginia. He was assisted by Cadet Hamilton with Miss Carol Hickock of Pennsylvania. The figure was directed by Major Robinson, who gave up hours of his valuable time to make it a success. Royce Stoenner and his famous orchestra furnished the music and during intermission, a supper was served in the Sunken Gardens. The gym was beauti- fully decorated with blue and white crepe paper, under the skillful supervision of the President. Soft lights and sweet music completed this picture. As the sun sinks over the mountain and the sound of “Auld Lang Syne” dies away, the Final Ball of 1942 comes to a close. John Minor, Earl Cabaniss, John Cort, Bob Linstone, Jerk Smathers, “Unc” Hamilton, Frank Vass, Mike Suttle, George Beam, Bill Knox FINAL BALL COMMITTEE As John Minor was elected leader of Final Ball and “Une” Hamilton as ’ his assistant, he chose the following men on his committee: George Beam, Bob Linstone, Earl Cabaniss, John Cort, “Jerk” Smathers, Frank Vass, “Mike” Suttle, and Bill Knox. Under his supervision the committee worked hard in decorating the gym, sending out bids, and arranging for the midmight supper on night of Final Ball, along with other minor details. We owe a great deal of praise to these men for providing us with the wonderful Final Ball and we will always remember them. Minor, Papernick, Reger, Oser, Stiff, Beard, Savage, Wrenn, Cort, McCaskey ORCHESTRA The A.M.A. Orchestra, organized under Luther Stiff and headed by their leader and business manager, John Minor, were really solid jive. Their success was due to their faculty leader, Lieutenant McChesney, who was called into service. The Cotillion Club owes a lot to the orchestra, for our informal dances really were enjoyed by the cadets and their dates. Outstanding features of the band were “Brack’? McCaskey and his drums, supported by “Toad” Stiff and “Bill” Johnson, who both play mean saxs. The trumpet section was ably handled by ‘“Squint” Savage and “Stud” Wrenn. Vocalist Lieutenant Bill McChesney really made the girls look twice. He was later replaced by Bob Linstone. Their greatest success was at Waynesboro at the Minstrel Show. They were “the talk of the town” for some time. CADET WHO'S WHO Most Popular Old Cadet lst—LINSTONE | 2nd—MINOR 3rd—EVANS, W. Best Commissioned Officer Ist—MINOR 2nd—HAMILTON 3rd—SMATHERS, J.
