With a new Coach, Lieutenant (Teeno) Kasunich at the helm, the team won six games and lost only one during the regular season ) and then lost to Fork Union’s juggernaut in the Tobacco Bowl classic the week after Thanksgiving. Big Nick Forkovitch was the spearhead of the team, both on offense and defense. Scoring the remarkable total of 144 points during the season, and rolling up over 1600 yards during the season, he was elected the captain of the mythical All-State team at the end of the season. Bill (Scoop) Metzger, tall and rangy end, was also named to the All-State team both because of his pass catching ability and his splendid defensive work. After losing the opener to a very strong Seton Hall team, Augusta went through six straight foes without a defeat, including a disputed verdict over Staunton. MecGuire’s fell 33-0 with Forkovitch scoring all the points; Randolph- Macon was vanquished 20-6, but the game was not that close; V.E.S. was taken into camp 19-14 after we had trailed 14-0; Charlotte Hall was beaten 40-19 after a hectic first half that ended 27-19; S.M.A. was behind 26-14 when it became too dark to see, but the game ended ‘in a near riot, and the officials, three days later, called it “no contest”; and Fishburne was trampled on to the tune of 26-6. The splendid work was recognized at the Annual Football banquet the day after Thanksgiving, when Major Roller awarded letters to Captain Dick Adams, Assistant Captains Hops Adams and Tony D’Amore; Forkovitch, Clyde Bell, Skeeter Hodges, Leonard Coote, Scoop Metzger, Henry Watters, Zeph Stultz, Pete Staples, Beverley Eggleston, Nate Adams, Whitey Larner, Tex Mahone, Eli Lloyd, Jack Marks, Unk Hamilton, Footy Cotton, Arthur Eichelbaum, and Man- ager Leslie Lam. BASKETBALL The basketball team showed a record of only eight wins against eleven losses, but six of the losses were against freshmen teams, so against purely prep school teams the record stood eight wins against only five losses, a creditable showing, since the first five games of the season were lost. Included in the win column were victories over Woodberry Forest, S.M.A., Fishburne (twice), Hargrave, V.E.S., Randolph-Macon, and Charlotte Hall. Co-Captains Bee White nd Jack Marks with five other lettermen and twelve newcomers comprised the squad. Bob Churchill led the scorers, followed by Nick Forkovitch, and consistently good playing was turned in by Bill Metzger, Eli Lloyd, Earl Cabaniss, and Bill Hoffman. At the end of the season letters were awarded to White, Marks, Forkovitch, Metzger, Churchill, Hoffman, Lloyd, Cabaniss, Arthur Eichelbaum,.Hampton Rowe, Beverley Eggleston, and Arthur Henderson. Bere «wrote s 6 BOXING The boxing season’ showed four victories against only two defeats for the seeason, and the two defats were by the closest of margins. Led by Captain Morris Guerrant, Zike Workman, and Kenneth Coote, all of whom were un- defeated, and Tommy Dickerson, with four wins and two losses, the team lost only to the Navy Plebes and to S. M. A., while winning from Covington High School, Fork Union, Miller School, and V. E. S. With only three days’ practice the team took Covington by a score of 6 to 4, then journeyed to the Naval Academy only to lose by the very close score of 4 2 to 3% ina match that was not decided until the last fight. There followed three straight wins, and then the match with Staunton. The 6-2 score does not indicate the closeness of the match, as after Augusta took a two to nothing lead on clearcut decisions by Workman and Guerrant, and Nate Adams had lost, we lost five straight one-point decisions. Every one of them was —— t so close that few in the audience could call them before the referee’s decision. t At the end of the season letters were awarded Guerrant, Workman, Ken Coote, Dickerson, Tony D’Amore, Hops Adams, Len Coote, Hershel Simmons, Tom Warner, Earl Cabaniss, Nate Adams, and James Moore was awarded a minor letter. As last year, Myron Frank, our backstroke record holder, again wa s un- defeated, and was never pressed in winning each race. He was ably assisted by Clyde Bell in the breaststroke, Bill Berry and John Wolf in the freestyle, and by Phil Dutch in the dives. The Staunton meet was lost on a technicality, as needing only a victory in the medley relay to win, Frank was not ready when the gun went off, and he lost a half-pcol length on the start. Most of the distance was made up, but the lead was too great to overcome. In the quadrangular meet, however, we took seven out of eight firsts to walk off with top honors. At the end of the season, letters were awarded Bell, Vic Delmas, Berry, Frank, Wolf, Berry, Pete Fox, Bob Reynolds, Herbert Venzer, Clayton Rich, Pluto Dermody, and Manager Jay Smathers. However, extremely valuable aid was given by Adver- tising Manager George Beam, and Assistant Advertising Manager Arthur Eichel- baum, and many others. Under the general supervision of White and Beam, the staff functioned smoothly, and with Captain McCue’s advice, each member did his job well. Brooke Montague handled the directory, a difficult job, and Morris Guerrant drew the caricatures for the Who’s Who, and how well can be seen by merely turning to that section. The various features were written by Bob Lipp, Clyde Stanley, Montague, John Minor, and Pete Staples. Last, but not least, recognition must be given to Ott Heilman, typist par excellence, whose speed on the keys was only exceeded by his willingness to.work. .
